@@stratelite1337 Sadly, they cannot ship marshall products to the US... not sure why. Very disappointed, but I had a feeling it was too good to be true.
The appeal of the JCM 800 for me comes from the attack when you have a boost in front of it. Heavier thrashier riffs; the palm mutes come through and give me the same sensation as hitting a 350 lb heavy bag. JCM's do get flubby, but it's a combination of the upper mid-range attack and the sag and swell of the signal that gives JCM's their voice. They're not an out-and-out "metal" amp, but as demonstrated here; they hold their own if not still outshine some more modern and contemporary amplifiers. The JCM is a bucket-list amp for me
Great video. I LOVE that you don't do post-processing. Please keep that up. We get a much more honest, real feel for the tone. I was considering one of these. They sound very good, but at $1,400 new in the U.S. I feel they are overpriced for what they are (and out of stock everywhere anyway). I opted for the Ceriatone 2202 instead.

Ive had this amp for a couple years. I was going crazy because I always read TS + JCM800 is supposed to equal thrash, but the only way I could get the saturation and grit to get a satisfying thrash tone was to use a TS plus another overdrive or boost…so thank you for validating me lol. Also awesome review as usual. Thanks for all of the awesome videos!

A JCM with the right pedal sounds like magic. I used to stack pedals at home but when I gigged I didn't do it because I could never make up my mind about what pedals to use in what order. So I usually just used an MXR, Boss or Rat, maybe a Tube Screamer. I went for a more traditional metal tone a la Maiden, Priest, etc.

I've got the mini JCM800, mini Plexi and the DSL20H. They're three great amps, and sound amazing when you start throwing in EQ pedals in the front and in the effects loop.
@@JSvideotv I run a parametric EQ in the effects loop, the aim is to tweak the sound after the preamp/gain stage. It helps to tame any unwanted frequencies, or boost some that aren't quite prominent enough. It's all really an effort to get that "sound in your head".
The SC20 is a great sounding JCM in a smaller and lower watt format that works around the house, easy to toss in your car and is loud enough to hang with a band. The low input is great for pedals, and the effects loop works perfect for delays, loopers and a volume boost for leads. Good job, Marshall.

I can totally get a Ride the Lightning kind of tone with my SC20 with just a simple boost. That album has less gain on the guitars than you think it does, but also, IME the SC20 actually sounds more like the old vertical input 2203s than the 2203x does (which is generally less saturated and a bit different in the mids than the original).
I had this amp and it is a killer amp. Especially for recording and playing live in a band setting. However - and with a little help from this channel - I ended up selling it to fund a 50w Splawn mini head. All the 800 clarity and tones with more gain on tap. Now I'm just waiting on my Ceriatone Chupacabra build and I'll be set on Marshalls.
Just picked one of these up off Craig's List and sold my Mini Jubilee. It kills. I have it along with my JCM 2000 DSL 50. It does have more gain than the original which is a big plus. Does it sound exactly like the originals?, no, but close enough and no one would ever know. And so easy to carry. But it has that 800 growl/ tone and feel when playing it. I sold my 82 2204 3 years ago and missed that tone. Now it's back. Put a clean boost in front sounds awesome too. It has plenty of gain with a pedal. Want more gain use the DSL. Both pure Tube signal path. Also sounds killer with Celestion G12t-75 speakers & Greenbacks. Keep in mind the 800 was never designed for Metal, it was a blues amp but when cranked became a hard rock amp. (not metal). Then people started to mod them to get more gain.
Hey Alan K, does the SC20H sound small compared to the JCM 2000 DSL 50? I am looking at these heads for studio and have found higher watts, bigger transformers tend to bring more bass and a bigger sound. Hoping for some input here. Thanks,
@@X9Eric Yep your correct. I love the tone better on the SC20h but I played with a band the other night first time using amp and didn't have much low end. I tend to steer away from pedals and use the pickups to dictate gain capacity matched with an amp. Your explanation of drive pedals in concert with an amplifier is very informative and I appreciate it. :D Have you ever tried a JVM410 JS? That is my favourite amp I have ever played. Funny how the circle of tone continues. You get a SC20, and it sounds thin at low volumes, and it's too loud for home use. So you need pedals. Then you think "pedals compress the natural amp tone, so I need more natural gain!" Then you think Friedman Runt 20, Splawn Mini. Same as when you have an actual 2204/2203! So Marshall really did make a mini JCM 800 2204!
You ran that into the 4 by 12 Mesa boogie cabinet? At 8ohm?? And it was still super loud? Hell yea think imma by one I’m gonna be running it through a 4 by 12 Marshall can at 8 ohm and hope it is loud enough to hear with my band but quiet enough that sound guys won’t raise hell every show lol
I really want one of these 20w marshalls to practice with. Looking for alice in chains type gain sound without turning my 100w mesa stiletto up. Can you say ouch to your ears?
It's a shame you didn't try it with the master volume *waaaaay* up. MV at 7 or 8 is where the amp really comes to life. MV at 3 just isn't letting this amp do what it should; if going higher is too loud, you'd be better off going to 5 watt mode IME.
All a matter of personal taste there. I personally don't like the compression that's imparted by having it cranked that high, and prefer it to be loud but punchy as opposed to loud and squishy.
Being a bedroom player, I’ll take this ANY FUCKING DAY. I can’t afford one right now, but it’s all good. I have a great alternative in my 6505 mh. It’s definitely not a Marshall, and the tone is definitely way more “American”, than British, but it still sounds fucking awesome with my Maxon OD-9 on the front.
cathode biased amps have a squishy more saturated sound..if its more metal-y sounding thats probably why..ive been on the fence about getting one of these, because the whole point of a marshall is the crisp tight way it holds together. when overdriven ...great detail .....that old fixed bias corcuit has a lot to do with that. on the other hand the 5 watt setting on a master volume amp might be really useful for me these days...my days of cranking a 100 watt marshall are over
Dude from a previous 2203x owner (which only sold it only for a 1980 jmp 2203 for a more vintage feel) i say these sc20h cant compare to its big brother 2203x, in the sv20h case for example marshall actually they hit the nail on the head where they failed with these squishy compressed and boxy sounding sc20hs.
I was going to ask if you thought it was loud enough to play with a band, I'm glad you confirmed that. I do play metal but I primarily play old school punk and Deathrock so the amp on its own would have enough gain for me and the power tube saturation would be nice too. I can't afford something like a 2204 or 1987x which is what I'd really love to have but I'm always worried 20 watts wouldn't cut it live but I suppose I could slave it out to someone like a powerstage 170 if I really needed to. I know a guy who uses a 30 watt Marshall artist head and a 2x12 and he keeps up just fine so I feel like with 20 watts and 4x12 I'd be okay haha. Thanks for the super informative videos as always!
Hey @Kyle Bull do you have some sort of tutorial on stacking boosts? I've been experimenting with stacking boosts in front of my DSL40 and applying the same methodology to my preamp pedals. I've found that the TS808 and Horizon Drive work well together.
I picked up one of these amps a couple months ago. Sounds good at low volumes with a SD1 up front , and sounds GREAT at 3-4 on volume but that’s waaay to loud for the house. Tried a Bugera PS1 but didn’t care for that so I may try a Rivera rock crusher next. If anyone has any experience with that let me know!
Hey Kyle, please try a Marshall Valvestate 8100 Head some day. Maybe the amp is older than you but in my opinion the sound is still modern, warm and fat and the Contour Knob is the Holy Grail 😀
Honestly it seems nice but I really don't think I'd buy one personally as a dedicated thrash metal type guy. Based on numerous reviews I've watched here including one from you all on the DSL20hr I would far rather buy the dsl20 as that thing sounds hard as hell all on its own without any effects at all in front of it which for me is somewhat of a necessity , I need to be happy with how the amp sounds on its own with zero external effects for me to consider buying it and the dsl20 based on the reviews seems like it can hold it's own in that aspect , especially for the classic thrash metal type stuff I'm into, bonus is it's like half the price of this amp you tested here.
Whats up man love the channel. Be awesome if you did a dedicated camera on your settings. Im having a hard time dialing this bad boy in. Love your tones. That camera view would be awesome man. Thanks
Have you tried the LynchMod yet? I got one recently and put it in my 1978 2203 and it slays! I don’t know if I go for the same tones you do, so it would be interesting to see what you thought about it.

I have that head also. I have mine on a Mesa 2x12 with a boss 7 band eq in the effects loop. I run a Maxon over drive and a Mesa grid slammer out front, with an mxr noise gate. I can get every metal tone under the sun.
You said it yourself, “I have three other JCM800s, and I have no use for this”. My sentiments exactly. Some things are better left alone. And that little crunch box ain’t no legit 800. It sounds a ‘feels’ small, doesn’t react the way the real 800 does. And if it can’t pull that off at 20 watts, it’s useless.
Hey Kyle Can you use that Lynch mod tube plug in on that amp?If so could you do a video with it! I would be interested in buying one and do the mod on it.

What cab setup did you use? 2 x 8ohm? 1 x 16? You didn’t use that 4 by 12 did you??? If so what ohm output are the speakers?
You should do a demo with this and the stealth in stereo.
I thought for sure they had el84's. That's awesome..i think it sounds great! wonder if there's 1000$ worth of difference between this and the dsl20 🤔
i played both at the store and bought the jcm but is it $1000 worth more of tone, NO but it just sounded way better soo
It def gets louder past 4. 6 is right about the sweet spot
That' really dependent on the bias of the power tubes
cathode biased amps have a squishy more saturated sound..if its more metal-y sounding thats probably why..ive been on the fence about getting one of these, because the whole point of a marshall is the crisp tight way it holds together. when overdriven ...great detail .....that old fixed bias corcuit has a lot to do with that. on the other hand the 5 watt setting on a master volume amp might be really useful for me these days...my days of cranking a 100 watt marshall are over
Dude from a previous 2203x owner (which only sold it only for a 1980 jmp 2203 for a more vintage feel) i say these sc20h cant compare to its big brother 2203x, in the sv20h case for example marshall actually they hit the nail on the head where they failed with these squishy compressed and boxy sounding sc20hs.
Thinking this amp would be perfect for some stoner riffs. Love my Laney Ironheart, but there's just something about a JCM
Run a mxr 12 band EQ. In the loop turn it in to a monster. 😁
Or the Mesa Boogie 5 band EQ?
@@johnsaras1 not much rather have amazing boogie Mark 5 for sure dude ultimate amp I think when things are like $6,000
Nice amplifier .. just way too expensive!
Sometimes good things cost more.
Thanks for the super informative videos as always!
were those inlays that color when you bought that les paul if not man that thing is aging beautifully. Rock on BULL!
No sir,! The classic series from the early 2000's had infamous "snot green" inlays from the factory. This was a 2001
Siiiiiick with the stacked overdrives
Excellent. Thanks! 🤘🏻
What about the low power setting on the amp?
@@belligerentamateur It helps but 5 watts can still be pretty loud.
Gotta love the Soldanos. They actually do go to 11. Lol \,,/
Hey Kyle, please try a Marshall Valvestate 8100 Head some day. Maybe the amp is older than you but in my opinion the sound is still modern, warm and fat and the Contour Knob is the Holy Grail 😀
Have the DSL 20 watts....does pretty much the same thing for half the price...
Yes and no. The DSL is definitely the better value though
Thanks
Typically do these days!
@@belligerentamateur well hell I must be blind.
Maybe im missing it on newer videos. Like, the constant close up shot of the dials. Awesome anyway dude.
Have you tried the LynchMod yet?
I got one recently and put it in my 1978 2203 and it slays! I don’t know if I go for the same tones you do, so it would be interesting to see what you thought about it.
Yes! I put it in my 2203 JMP and it's a game changer. Absolutely love it
But in the used market at the near $1,000 dollar price tag I'll take a 50 watt EVH 5150 iii all day long.i just got a 5150 iii 50 watt with a matching 2x12 cab for $850.00 can't beat it 🤘🤘
I have that head also. I have mine on a Mesa 2x12 with a boss 7 band eq in the effects loop. I run a Maxon over drive and a Mesa grid slammer out front, with an mxr noise gate. I can get every metal tone under the sun.
I can't decide between this marshall or orange th30. Could you give me some advices? Great playing btw!
Hey man! Unfortunately, no experience with the Orange, but I can say this is a great little amp!
Sound wise what do you think of this as compared to the DSL20HR?
You said it yourself, “I have three other JCM800s, and I have no use for this”. My sentiments exactly. Some things are better left alone. And that little crunch box ain’t no legit 800. It sounds a ‘feels’ small, doesn’t react the way the real 800 does. And if it can’t pull that off at 20 watts, it’s useless.
Don't agree with a single point you make here, but to each their own.
Excellent video, man!
Thank you!
Sick tone, Bro! What's the gear in the recording chain, please?
Just an SM57 and a Presonus 1818VSL interface.
@@belligerentamateur Thanks. Sounds pro, Bro.
Think this amp with some distortion and fuzz pedals stacked will do doom metal, can you get Electric Wizard out of this ?
Hey Kyle
Can you use that Lynch mod tube plug in on that amp?If so could you do a video with it! I would be interested in buying one and do the mod on it.
Already got you covered - ua-cam.com/video/rvAygDxL2YY/v-deo.html
