- The Amphitheatre Ephesus in Turkey was the site of one of Elton’s most striking solo concerts. On July 17th 2001, he played a 20-song set with every decade of his career represented, including this performance of ‘Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters’. In the track, lyricist Bernie Taupin expresses his then-disillusionment with New York City. The song quickly became a favourite by both fans and the composer, who has called it “one of my all-time favourites”.

Awesome performance. Coming at the tail end of the era when his voice was still smooth-sounding.
He strained it from over touring. Check out his most recent performance of it at the Gershwin Prize ceremony. After some rest he sounds absolutely amazing.

I love that part 2 version ! There was a brief time when he would preform both versions back to back in concert. The contrast between the two songs is amazing as the first version depicts Mr. Taupin's & EJ's young wide-eyed experience of New York City & part 2 in lyrics & music capture the endless variety & energy of that great city by the close of the 80s.

Elton's voice seems remarkably unchanged over the years. Most singers of his age sound very different than they did in their prime.
Elton’s voice has changed a lot thanks to the voice surgery. Its a lot deeper and he doesn’t hit higher notes as near as well as he did in his prime. That said, he still sounds better than Paul McCartney, whose voice is gone
