Agree with Joe. This is the problem when you combine individual top 20 lists. People assume the big albums will make it, so they stuff their lists with obscure albums they want to make it, and the result is a completely random list.
Yeah. It may be a pain to ask people to compile longer lists, but you get a better result, because there's less you have to leave off. A fairer way would be to make a longlist for each decade, cut it down to about 50 for each (giving you 350) and then getting everyone to rank all of them in preferred order, collating the results and cutting it down to to the top 200. This list is a large improvement from Apple's. There's more variety and more welcoming of older albums. The top 10 was a little weird but they picked a much better album for the number 1 spot.
@TastesLikeMusic yeah it's far from a perfect list (as much lists are from the last 4 years). There seemed for be more consideration for rocks roots here and other genres, whereas Apple's list looked like some millennial or zoomer's Playlist. Great video and breakdown as usual!!!

This list is SO much better than Apples. I am slightly surprised (although maybe it's only me) that they find no room for either R.E.M or Crowded House....
They had R.E.M. on here, they just skipped quite a few in the discussion. If you looked at the top of the screen, they showed the album covers and rankings of the ones they skipped over (I didn't notice until halfway through the video either). 'Murmur' was 124 and 'Automatic for the People' was 53.
Odd, patchworky list - better than Apple - and I've gotta admit seeing The Cure at #2 warms my heart. Disrespect to the Beatles, Beach Boys and Pink Floyd unwarranted though.
Not one New Order or Depeche Mode album on the list? LOL I will it was nice to see Disintegration that high albeit crazy. Also nice seeing The Mats’ Pleased to Meet Me and Tim so high.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I agree with both of you that many of choices are great, but the ranking doesn't quite add up. By the way, the first list of this kind I ever saw was for Rolling Stone magazine's 20th anniversary, where they ranked the top 100 albums from 1967 to 1987. It'd be interesting to see if you guys want to dive into that one. I was a teenager at the time and found it quite influential.
I agree, don't know what their issue with Iggy Pop and The Stooges is, but 'Raw Power' is a classic and extremely important and influential album that inspired many punk, metal and rock bands. It's raw, guttural and in your face, but also kind of sexy and beautiful. It's in my personal top 30.
Weird to see how these lists change over time. Hounds of Love was nowhere near the top of any of these lists even 10 years ago. Is that because of Stranger Things?
Probably but I'm glad it's there: Kate Bush is a stone cold genius (even though the US never 'got her' for some reason). Her debut album should have been on there as well.
Joe has a really hard time with the words "high" and "low" for these lists such that the viewer has no idea where he's saying an album should be placed.
With multiple placements by such artists as Bjork and Fiona Apple appearing on the list .. where is Tori Amos at???? Surely, any of her first four albums alone would deserve proper recognition?!
Great to see Disintegration by The Cure as high as 2. Disappointed to see the likes of OK Computer and Dark Side of the Moon as low as they were So many great albums overlooked, but I guess they wanted some variety with genres and eras Great video. Great work once again guys. Cheers!
I think this list's biggest flaw is the placements of the albums. But at least they have solid representation of country, funk, electronic, and non-english music. In my opinion the variety on this list makes it far better than Apple's
Amazing Grace is a kind of a live album. She wanted to do a gospel album, but wanted to get the feeling of a church with a gospel choir. So they decided to record it live in a church over a few days to give it that feel. But it was not recorded to be a concert album. There is a critically acclaimed documentary about it produced a few years back which may be why it's inclusion on this Paste list. All in all it is an absolute wonderful passionate album.... But, I still would not consider it one of the best 300 albums of all time, and as you pointed out not even her best of 1972
These "Greatest Albums of All Time" lists are way too broad to properly evaluate albums and be taken seriously. It would make more sense to rank the "Top 100 Rock Albums from the 70s" or "Top 100 Hip Hop/Rap albums from the 90s", which is what you try to do on this channel. It's too difficult to compare albums from different genres and time periods. I think it would be more interesting for famous artists to list their favorite 100 albums of all time than these media publications.
Any "greatest" list will suffer from personal preferences, but I agree with Jason's opinion. There's no need to include an album that wouldn't even make your top 8 list. I would go on to say that if you plan to list more than about 3 to 5 albums from a single artist on your "greatest albums" list, then you're probably compling the wrong list. If you're going to wave your favorite artist's flag that hard, then you should just limit your list to a specific genre, or time period, or simply the best albums by that artist.
I agree with Joe, the Apple list at least you knew the pattern and what their formula was. This seems like some random person's list of albums they like. It doesn't seem like selection by a committee or some type of formula. Albums are all over the place here and some are just very poorly misplaced. I personally don't care for these lists but thought I'd weigh in anyway.
Related hey there, ODing on Cake, SC FN MG can’t get enough thank you. This is sophisticated Pop, great ripping horns ,they go from Comanche to Up Close to Jolene so very good
The Replacements' "Tim" made it to 41 - maybe they heard the good remix? And their 'Let it Be" landed at 76. This was better than I expected for these two great records, and I'll stop while I'm ahead. There is little use trying to figure out most of the rest.
Everybody is different. For example, On The Beach is my fav Young album. I think this list is better than the Apple one (not difficult) in terms of the content. However, the order appears ridiculous to me - like they (ironically) just hit shuffle when publishing this list. Stuart.
All greatest album lists are pointless. They are completely subjective, and no one else will agree with them. My 5 greatest albums would please a few, but enrage the majority. But my list is no more or less valid than the next persons list. If you are interested my list is: 5.Raw Power - the Stooges; 4. Monster Movie - Can; 3. London Calling - The Clash; 2. Forever Changes - Love; 1. Easter Everywhere - the 13th Floor Elevators.
That’s an interesting list. The point of greatest albums of all time is not to have a list of “favorites” though. That’s an entirely separate discussion. These are supposed to be the greatest, most influential, most note worthy. They can’t be a “my top 20 favorite albums” list or you get garbage like this. - Joe
If that is the case, then there can only be a choice of 2 for the 'best album'. That is either of the best and most influential albums made by the best and most influential music act of all time - Revolver or Sgt Peppers by the Beatles.
All three (Paste, Apple, Rolling Stone) lists are really poor, and I suspect are partially made that poor intentionally just to stir up conversation and draw attention to the publication. I'm waiting for the Tastes Like Music top 500 albums for the definitive list!
Better than Apple but there’s 200 more albums to play with! Much better than Apple. Good to see Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada. Someone is clearly a Twin Peaks fan too. I now realise that you guys would hate my Top 100!
I couldn't agree more! 'On The Beach' is an incredible album. Arguments over whether or not it's better than 'After The Gold Rush' are immaterial, when you suggest that 'On The Beach' has "no good songs" 🤯 It's not that the album is suddenly back in vogue, it's more that it not being widely available until it was reissued on CD in 2003 meant that people had forgotten just what a superb album it is and it's finally getting its long overdue reappraisal. I like the TLM guys, but I find it hard to get my head around Jason slating 'On The Beach', yet he thinks that Graham Nash (very good, but easily the least talented songwriter of the four) produced the best CSNY solo album, while he also like the interminably dull Counting Crows 😬
@@TastesLikeMusic His 70s output so incredibly strong and that long run of great albums almost unprecedented, especially when you include his first two albums from the 60s. With that in mind, I don't have a big issue with you saying On The Beach is his worst 70s album. However, I clearly don't hear American Stars 'n Bars (4 stars) as good as On The Beach (5 stars). On The Beach probably speaks to me that much because some of the tracks (in particular the entire side 2) are among his saddest and at the same time most beautiful songs. That's also the reason why Tonight's The Night is my favorite Neil album, because it's even sadder. And yes, After The Goldrush is at number 3, but only slightly ahead of the next one.
@@TastesLikeMusic Dear God, no! I sometimes find it hard to decide which one of 'On The Beach', 'After The Gold Rush', 'Zuma', 'Rust Never Sleeps', 'Harvest', 'Tonight's The Night' or 'Times Fades Away' is his best 70s album, but O.T.B. is easily better than 'Comes A Time' and 'American Stars and Bars' (both of which are very good - a clear sign of just how incredible his late 60s/early 70s run was).
There’s nothing On the Beach that is close to like a Hurricane or Will to Live or Bite the Bullet or Old Country Waltz. But then again I prefer southern rock and country rock to the mopey stuff. - Joe
I disagree, I cannot stand it because of its arrangement. It's half proper songs and half ambient/art instrumentals scattered in there. I don't like that setup, give me one or the other. I prefer his first 2 as proper music albums and my favorite ambient album of his is Music for Airports, which is my remedy on certain days.
Hey, it’s a bunch of bleeps and bloops with some incendiary guitar work here and there…and surprisingly I loved it! I probably love it a little less now, but still. Here Come the Warm Jets is better tho.
I remember I would often buy Mojo or Uncut but Paste was one I would read while sitting in Borders & enjoying a coffee ☕️. The articles weren't compelling & often didn't include interviews. Kinda of a dull magazine & really favored bands that were supposed to be good but in reality were mediocre !
33:48 i really wished if you guys didn't Skip and talk about the 84. Album because this album getting so much famous the last years and i never understood the hype
It might be fine with you but it’s stupid to think that there are 3 PJ Harvey albums better than say… Close to the Edge or Who’s Next or Sabbath Bloody Sabbath or Dirt or Angel Dust or Parklife or I Get Wet. - Joe
A small (dark) victory that Joe liked or didn't hate a couple of songs. I like New Order better than Joy Division but I guess JD's Love will Tear us Apart is my favorite followed by Transmission. Have more songs I like by New Order. 😵💫🥴🙄 Hope you are doing well.
@@oppothumbs1 I can’t choose between JD and New Order! They both scratch a slightly different musical itch, and one just evolved into the other. “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and “Transmission” are fine fave song choices! Very cool to see Camaron's La Leyenda Del Tiempo. Amazing record...I requested the song that gives name yo the album for one of the monthly Patreon's playlist
Factual, one of the most revered and influential bands of the last 45 years is not included: Siouxsie and the Banshees. Either The Scream (1978) or Juju (1981) should have been selected. But they included 3 PJ Harvey records ! including Stories From... which is per moments a pastiche of the Pretenders ! Sleater-Kinney better and more influential than the Banshees ? All the rock musicians would laugh at the face of Paste's editor in chief. Paste magazine are 1st category dilletantes. They don't have any strong culture, their team is like Pitchfork's: they don"t even know the musical tastes and influences of their darlings. No Depeche Mode record either ? And is the 1st LCD Soundsystem really a better album than any Kraftwerk record ? This is education in reverse. Robert Smith would have headaches to see the Cure higher than Hendrix and the Beatles, literally he would leave the room after saying Paste's editor in chief 'ever picked an instrument, dude ?" 😂
I wouldn't put The White Album ahead of Rubber Soul. Why does Dave Brubeck's "Time Out" never get on these lists? OR did I miss it? Crazy innovative and influential record.
@@TastesLikeMusic I wouldn't classify the Alice/John Coltranes, Sanders, Coleman or Mingus as bebop. The first 3 fall more into the realm of Spiritual Jazz.
I hadn't even heard of Fishmans until you talked about the Rate Your Music top albums. I really like Long Season, but it is, on its best day, with the wind at its back, a dark horse candidate for my top 300. Number 7? Get f'd.
Better than apple's, but I didn't hate their list that much to begin with so I'm fine with both Edit: Joe, you really need to give The life of Pablo another spin, it's a great album and my personal 2nd favorite Kanye album, not quite the masterpiece that College dropout is, but it's fantastic and underrated IMO.
Many of the placements on this list are totally wack but I do agree that I like the variety and the representation of some different things even if they aren't necessarily things I would pick. It's still a mess but I am going with Paste as the best even if I can't get over the fact that they put that Britney Spears album in there. I remember thinking that wasn't even a good album and obvious hits + filler collection when it came out, there's no way 25 years later that it sounds like anything but that. There does seem to be a lot of over-correction with this list as far as putting past agreed upon classics fairly low on the list. That aspect is annoyingly transparent. Even with my complaints this list is still my favourite of the three. 😂
Very fun to see something from The Miracles/Smokey Robinson but is that the best choice? The best album Smokey Robinson has delivered? Tell me your thoughts!
Aretha's Amazing Grace is a live gospel album. It is a stunning album. Surprised you both dismissed it so easily. You don't need to be a gospel aficionado to love it. The shows were filmed, but not released for decades due to a syncing issue that they were recently able to fix, it is worth watching. It is amazing how artists fall in and out of fashion. Everyone has their artist they can't believe gets snubbed. For me it is Elvis Costello. For a lot of his career he was the critics darling, but somehow he has fallen out of favor and I am not completely sure why. Too much of a catalogue making him seemingly unapproachable? Not having that singular album that can be added to a list with no discussion. Or maybe he hasn't gone dormant for long enough for people to miss him? He will be missed and hopefully appreciated when he is sadly gone.
Baffled by the inclusions of Pavement, Modest Mouse, Magnetic Fields, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Microphones, Yo La Tengo, and the Fall -- all of whom are great besides the Fall --WITHOUT any mention or even allusion to Guided by Voices. Its like they were in a diamond mine of 90s lo-fi and left behind the biggest, shiniest gem.
@@oppothumbs1 I agree that they're a top 20 band of all time, but I don't entirely agree that their mistake was going lo-fi. Vampire on Titus, their most challenging record, cultivated a strong fanbase and Bee Thousand is still their most popular while remaining very lo-fi. If they had jumped from their early output to, say, Do the Collapse (which is still great) they may have gotten more attention than they did in the short-term but we probably wouldn't be talking about them as much today.
@@adamsherif8323 I am not so familiar with their many albums (Robert is so prolific), having discovered them late and not an big album listener. Sure, I don't mean lo-fi was a mistake or broke them and it suits most songs. Just searching for a reason when "there is no reasons what reason do we need to be shown?"
@@oppothumbs1 I definitely see your point though, a band that melodically gifted should have been massive. One has to wonder what a version of 'Echos Myron' would sound like without the tape hiss -- maybe it loses some of the magic or maybe they reach levels of fame that they always deserved to... maybe both. Also thanks for the song rec, ironic that I decided to search up that quote on a Monday.
The Cure's Disintegration should be higher, the PJ Harveys should all be in the top 30 and the Deerhunter is about 70 spots too low. Other than that, not a bad list.
I'm surprised y'all aren't familiar with Dreaming My Dreams by Waylon. Interested to hear your thoughts about some of his other albums, Jason. Any favorites?
I get the hate for putting it above after the gold rush but on the beach still has a lot to offer . Side 2 is memorizing starting from the title track which is a top ten Neil young song. It’s all just so haunting. A top 5 Neil album 🫡
Disagree. Neither mesmerizing nor haunting. Believe I ranked it as my 12th favorite Neil album. 39th all-time is the most laughable thing on their entire list. -Jason
There is no way this list is worse than Apple's list. Any list that has Billie Eilish, Bad Bunny, and multiple Taylor Swift albums in the top 100 greatest albums of all time is worse.
Better than Apple's but still embarrassing. Cosmo's Factory? Damn the Torpedoes? Number of the Beast? Today? Madman Across the Water? I could go on. They included live albums so where's Judy Garland Live at Carnegie Hall or Allman Bros at Filmore East?. Why isn't Classical music represented?

They had R.E.M. on here, they just skipped quite a few in the discussion. If you looked at the top of the screen, they showed the album covers and rankings of the ones they skipped over (I didn't notice until halfway through the video either). 'Murmur' was 124 and 'Automatic for the People' was 53.
@futureidol83 ah cool! That's good and I had completely missed that!
for me is worst because is very unrealistic, nobody else except the cure fans think that desintegration could be in a top 10 best album ever
@@hectorkish6598 the apple list had TOO much modern music and far too many rap albums
Super refreshing list. Even picks like Disintegration being #2 is wild but I respect it
Odd, patchworky list - better than Apple - and I've gotta admit seeing The Cure at #2 warms my heart. Disrespect to the Beatles, Beach Boys and Pink Floyd unwarranted though.
“People just think this album’s cool to like because it doesn’t have any good songs on it” 💯
One of these lists finally admitted that country music is a valid art form!
I would love to hear your personal top 300 lists!
Not one New Order or Depeche Mode album on the list? LOL
I will it was nice to see Disintegration that high albeit crazy.
I was a teenager at the time and found it quite influential.
no who’s next? interesting.
No In Utero? The Bends? Achtung Baby? Keep It Like a Secret? Oh well, life goes on....
‘I Want You’ is my favorite Marvin record…his work with Leon Ware is sublime
Raw Power definitely deserves to be in the top 100
I agree, don't know what their issue with Iggy Pop and The Stooges is, but 'Raw Power' is a classic and extremely important and influential album that inspired many punk, metal and rock bands. It's raw, guttural and in your face, but also kind of sexy and beautiful. It's in my personal top 30.
Also imho ‘Talking Book’ & ‘Music Of My Mind’ are both superior to ‘Songs In The Key Of Life’ as great as it is
Weird to see how these lists change over time. Hounds of Love was nowhere near the top of any of these lists even 10 years ago. Is that because of Stranger Things?
Probably but I'm glad it's there: Kate Bush is a stone cold genius (even though the US never 'got her' for some reason). Her debut album should have been on there as well.
This is so much better than Apple, or even the more recent Rolling Stone lists. It's still not great, but better.
Joe has a really hard time with the words "high" and "low" for these lists such that the viewer has no idea where he's saying an album should be placed.
You can figure it out
@@TastesLikeMusic It's just too bad Joe can't.
I started out liking this list, but it became apparent it's just subjective chaos to a fault.
I would probably have quite a few of the albums that were skipped through in my top 100. Always nice to see BOC make an appearance.
Disintegration the best album ever, bitches :P
With multiple placements by such artists as Bjork and Fiona Apple appearing on the list .. where is Tori Amos at????
Surely, any of her first four albums alone would deserve proper recognition?!
Yeah that was a massive oversight, no? - Joe
METERS REJUVENATION IS SUCH A RIPPER! So cool they put it on the list. Maybe my personal favorite funk record
that was just for you Daddy 😂
Great to see Disintegration by The Cure as high as 2. Disappointed to see the likes of OK Computer and Dark Side of the Moon as low as they were
So many great albums overlooked, but I guess they wanted some variety with genres and eras
Great video. Great work once again guys. Cheers!
The Idler Wheel is goated!
Seeing 'Hissing of Summer Lawns' at 52 is cool. One of my favorite albums. I hope we see the Ramones deep dive someday. Override the polls Jason!
Joni Michell’s critical importance can’t be understated
Nebraska is not overrated
I think its his best honestly.
I think this list's biggest flaw is the placements of the albums. But at least they have solid representation of country, funk, electronic, and non-english music. In my opinion the variety on this list makes it far better than Apple's
They had 200 more albums. Of course there’s more inclusion. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Even just looking at the top 100, Paste has more variety of genres (and languages) than Apple

Agree with Bjork's Post > Homogenic, finally not alone!
The number 3 and number 2 slots are based.
You would think that. - Joe
When are you guys going to review Laura Nyro's catalogue?
Sometime
Calling Carrie & Lowell “dreadfully boring” is wild. It’s an album written for his mother who passed away. It’s not like it’s meant to be exciting.
i know its one of the few albums i listened to where i love every song on the first listen
But just because it’s written about a family member’s passing doesn’t make it a great album.
@@curly_wyn i didn't even know the context of the album and i was still blown away by how beautiful it is
@@curly_wyn that’s not what I suggested
Whatever its still one of best albums this century
Any "greatest" list will suffer from personal preferences, but I agree with Jason's opinion. There's no need to include an album that wouldn't even make your top 8 list.
I would go on to say that if you plan to list more than about 3 to 5 albums from a single artist on your "greatest albums" list, then you're probably compling the wrong list. If you're going to wave your favorite artist's flag that hard, then you should just limit your list to a specific genre, or time period, or simply the best albums by that artist.
Completely
I feel like this list is more audacious compared to a lot of the other lists.
This is sophisticated Pop, great ripping horns ,they go from Comanche to Up Close to Jolene so very good
Paste followed up a horrible Top 100 by Apple with an also awful Top 300 of their own.
What joy.
If you are interested my list is:
5.Raw Power - the Stooges;
4. Monster Movie - Can;
3. London Calling - The Clash;
2. Forever Changes - Love;
My personal albums list will be anything but definitive for people. -Jason
Better than Apple but there’s 200 more albums to play with! Much better than Apple. Good to see Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada. Someone is clearly a Twin Peaks fan too. I now realise that you guys would hate my Top 100!
On the Beach rules! You’re insane.
It’s good but basically his worst 70s album. - Joe
- Joe
Another Green World is a great record
I disagree, I cannot stand it because of its arrangement. It's half proper songs and half ambient/art instrumentals scattered in there. I don't like that setup, give me one or the other. I prefer his first 2 as proper music albums and my favorite ambient album of his is Music for Airports, which is my remedy on certain days.
Hey, it’s a bunch of bleeps and bloops with some incendiary guitar work here and there…and surprisingly I loved it! I probably love it a little less now, but still. Here Come the Warm Jets is better tho.
LIVE THROUGH THIS ahead of NEVERMIND?
The Meters ‘Rejuvination’ is great, maybe their best, and Aquemini is my favorite ‘OutKast’
I love Wilco and always laugh with Joe's reactions
Many people are Wilco pilled. - Joe
I love the only Janelle Monae album on the entire list being the one when she stopped being great.
Yeah how do you not put on archandroid
I think the only reason this list seems better than the Apple list is because Paste had another 200 albums to play with.

Guided by Voices is easily at top 20 band of all time. Their mistake was going lo-fi. I like it but probably hurt their popularity.
