GREAT Video! Keeping things simple and easy to understand.....Often instructional videos have the person just plowing through as if the people watching the video already know everything about how to do whatever the video is covering.....Your video is well done....Simplifying things so it's easy to follow and understand. Really helped me out a lot. Great job!
I was guilty of the thing at 0:36 however when I did it the cable ripped straight out of the input jack. Managed to sort it out though so thanks a lot for the advice 👍
ive been using some planet waves leads that only send sound in one direction (supposed to prevent signal bounce back) for the last 15 years. They have been stood on, thrown around, chewed by rabbits and a cat and they still work. By the way, i havent been playing gigs at a vets surgery, the rabbits and cats were pets.
anyone not proficient in using a soldering iron should not be attempting any repairs or modifications to equipment. practice those skills on scrap strip board, components and cable and once that skill has been honed then come back to these tutorials.
CSGuitars that's such a patronising response when this is supposed to be a how-to video. You could have showed stripping the sheathing back, or what to do if you have a sealed jack, i.e. cut it off and start from scratch
Then it is time for a new cable (or make 2 shorter cables from your dead one) Most issues with cables however are at the plug ends, and are usually a two minute job to fix.
my kid knocked over my whole setup and as i went to pick it up he came to "help" got caught it the cord and did it a second time even harder i wanted to cry it seroisly feels like a beloved pet died ive had this equipment forever
I'm fortunate enough to not destroy a guitar cable that was hanging out of a car, the jack got some nice road rash though. Also when a 30' cable is not long enough, does that mean I should invest in wireless, would a 40-50' cable suck the tone out?
You really start loosing your instrument tone after 20 or 30 feet. I'd only recommend longer if you're working with active pickups like you might find in an acoustic electric guitar because those are dealing with higher voltages. Alternatively, you can have an amp head closer and have the speaker cable going from the amp to the cabinet wherever it may be
I bought a new cable because my last one didn’t last and the amp hasn’t been connecting to my guitar at all for the last 3 months. I don’t know what to do and it’s my first time owning a guitar. Do you have any advice to fix it??
first broken instrument cord ever for me, the positive tip somehow is no longer connected and even weirder, it seems the center of the cord pulled back away from it, so I'll be stripping the cord away and redoing it. Damn I was very careful with that cord. Glad I have a $ 25 wireless rechargeable system. Easy way to check an instrument cord, use a multi-meter and check for continuity. Multi-meter has an audible beep for continuity. So the probes connect sleeve to sleeve for the "-" and tip to tip for the "+" wire at each end for the Mono TS. I don't have a stereo instrument cord, but I figure the TRS works the same, where not only the tip to tip & sleeve to sleeve connection indicates continuity, but also the ring to ring.
hey man, i know this is an old video, but i have a cable that has lasted like 8 years, and i'ts gotten kinda noisy... i checked the connections and solders on both input jacks and it appears to be fine.. so i guess the problem is somewhere along the cable itself... any tips on how to go abut fixing this problem? cheers dude great channel!
thanks dude for me the wire is not directly connected to the jack, the wire comes out if i pull it and its not like taped together as I'd say. I've to push my wire in the jack so that when it touches the metal ther's connection but sometimes it's really hard any solution to this problem?
m8 my problem is this....i take amazing care of my cables i dontk now how but the mid of the whole cable snapped almost as if something chewed thru it. my question is would i be able to fix that on my own by removing excess insulation and using maybe some soldering or elec tape re wire it back together and then put a layer of insulation over it or not...????
What are the cable ends called? And is it possible to splice an end on that would fit in your phone for example. I would call them what they are called, but I don't know what they are called. Know what I'm sayin? Cool vid!
My dog chewed her way through the middle of one of my favorite cables. Any suggestions as to how to splice them? I have a primitive technique for doing that but I would like to see how someone does it who knows what they are doing.
I've never tried to splice a dog and a guitar cable together but maybe you could try feeding her one end of the cable and waiting a day or two until the cable works its way through her system and comes out the other end. Hope that helps!
The only ones I have had problems with over the years are the coily ones. I wrap the others ones like you said and they last a Long time. Usually If they crap out Its from the S&O slamming them in a drawer. Once the middle is pinched I figured they were trash.
I've been using the same guitar cable since I first started playing, and the cable is wayyy older then me as it's from the 60s along with the guitar I got it with.
Anyone who knows how to solder would know that the plug is most likely the problem. Thus, the only people that would find a video like this helpful are people who dont have any experience soldering. Yet you skipped that part?
The one cable that I babied so hard, my Fender KoilKord, just stopped working one day and I maybe used it like 20 times ever. Can't even take the end off without cutting into the into the insulation either.
im currently renting a bass and the cable was working for a day or so and then all of a sudden its not anymore. i dont know if im the one that broke it (somehow) or if the person before damaged it but i feel like a bad person lol
Idk if anyone can help me all my cables break super fast. I just bought one last week after all 6 of my cables finally all stopped working and the new one barely works. It shouldnt be the guitar because it dosent work with my 3 working guitars(my guitars audio Jack's also dont work in like half my guitars) also my amp and pedal board are not the issue. What should I do???
Get a multimeter and do a continuity test on the cables. The multimeter will have a setting whereby it makes a buzzing noise if you touch the probes together. Use the probes to touch both ends of the cable at the same time. If it buzzes -cable ok. If it doesn’t - broken cable
wow, You're a guitar tech, I need that amplifier marshall and Fender for my guitar. Can you help me to fix my strings? I will make a rock band soon! 😀😀
If you want a guitar cable to last... do NOT use the "old over the elbow" technique. Using the elbow to wrap guitar cables or mic cables breaks the copper strands on the inside of the cable. Trust me, use the "over-under" technique. I even posted a video on how to properly wrap a cable. Have a great day! #guitarlessons #guitar Sammy Bones
Anyone with a shot of Fay Wray on their wall is ok by me. Check out her other early films on youtube, like The Most Dangerous Game, and The Bowery, with George Raft and Wallace Beery.
My cable just stopped working, I never really took the connector out I just turned my amp off and wrapped my cord up while it was still plugged in and suddenly my connector stopped making contact with my guitar
My Bad, I must have missed something here. I thought I was going to watch a video that is titled "How to Fix a Broken Guitar Cable"? NOT "How to Prevent Them from Getting Broke in the First Place."
Monster cables are also hideously expensive. They are pretty much a rip off, I could make a cable of equivalent quality for a fraction of the price

Ther probably a million how to solder videos with more details, specifics, and safety.

Thank you. This was much cheaper than buying a new cable. very helpful.
Thank you mate you just saved me from buying a new cable.cheers.

Please explain how your amp input " knows" the difference whether you pulled the plug at the cable or at the plug.

allright then. good overview. now i need to learn how to de-solder & solder

I hate when assholes step on my cords, biggest pet peeve
Thanks from Ireland, good tutorial.
What about if you leave the cable plugged into the guitar and the amp after you've finished playing it? Does that also damage your cable?
I woke up in a morning and it didn't work my cable I don't pull it like that anyway it could be the fuse

Wait, where’s the part where you connect the wires to the 1/4 shaft?
What about fixing it when it pops out of the jack on a guitar less then 1 centimeter
My cord is brand new well a month or two old maybe played 5-10 times
I have always been pulling it out right but both sides kept on ripping
Well, I can't get to the actual wired area if the cable as I don't have a part that you can screw off

What if it is a fender custom cable where you cant roll back the sleeve :)?
Where do you get the replacement jack plugs?
Look on any guitar parts site. Small bear electronics has them and other electronic components dirt cheap.

@@AdolfFauci lmao
what if the break is in the middle of the cable?
coil them neatly, or you could do that old elbow technique.
what I mean is don't just ram them into your gig bag when you are finished using them.
Elbow technique puts strain on the cable over time - plus you get dirty looks from any sound engineer / techie. Always coil :)
I never treat my cables like that but how many of us are still guilty of dropping our cables? 🤦♂️ lol
