I think that one of the most important tools that a leader can carry with them is a pair of work gloves. Hangout with the troops. Ask them questions. The shabby looking guy may have the very key to the big question. Make sure he gets rewarded. Do you want to change that one guy... The stoner? Get in good with him . Change him by getting him a cup of coffee and asking him to make sure the office plants get taken care of. Every body has great value.
Same thing Jack Welch preaches. Fire managers who don't have the values even if they bring in the numbers.
