I just did this exact same test. I agree completely with your 8 review. I rinsed with water between the two though. The 8 leaves you with a coating that lingers and will probably influence your 16 review. 8 is actually a great value single malt Scotch and delivers a fabulous experience. It's a great go-to Scotch if you crave satisfaction. Highly recommended. But I also agree that the 16 is actually head and shoulders above the 8. The sharpness and acidic citrus of the 8 disappears and you're exposed to a smoother smoke and richer oak and fruity experience with so many more discernible hints that seemingly appear out of nowhere. If you are ever able to compare/contrast the two one after the other, it's a fantastic opportunity that you should always take. Lagavulin for the win!
I love both expressions! Lag 16 is my favourite and after many lovely single malts I still come back often to both of these beauties! I'd always be thrilled having either one! Sentimental favourites!! Terrific video! Cheers!

It would be amazing to try an 8 and a 16 from the same batch. I will go buy an 8 tomorrow and store it away…and 8 years from now I’ll get a 16 and they should both be from the 2015 batches.
I usually have a splurge on a single Malt for Xmas this year I bought a bottle of the 8yr Lagavulin and its now languishing back in its box in a cupboard because in my opinion its one of the worst tasting and smelling whiskies I have ever bought the aroma reminds me of Wrights Coal Tar soap and the flavour is just horrendous suffice it to say that I wont be wasting AU$ 100+ on it ever again !
