UDC Forum: Sally Hemings Portrait

Founding Farmers Restaurant in Reston Virginia commissioned my guest, Jessica Maria Hopkins to paint a portrait of Sally Hemings, the enslaved woman whom historians and biological tests have confirmed had a sexual relationship with Thomas Jefferson that led to at least one and probably six children between 1790 and 1808.

Your right there are non. Even given first hand description of her, this portrait is inaccurate

Yes and no. We do have one contemporary depiction, but it wasn’t made from life and was a political cartoon insulting Jefferson. 😀

I think she would have looked more like a white woman that could pass for white, like Eartha Kitts daughter. She was only 1/4 African.

From what I've learned it seems to me that Sally Hemmings was bi racial already, hence her amazing beauty that is often inherent with females of mixed races.
