Look people...it is all subjective. Leibowitz likes to play with subtlety; this is photographically difficult, which is why most of the over-lit garbage that litters the popular image highways of today is simple and panders to the all too banal stock conditioning of the over-stimulated masses. There are plenty of fine black photographers out there, so finding one would not be the issue. They obviously wanted Leibowitz, so that's what they got. Talk to the editors.

I took a look and white skin naturally contrast with her dark gloomy tones. That’s like saying I put pink blush on this white person so I’ll use the same pink blush on this black person and it should give the same effect. You use a different color blush to get the same effect. She obviously isn’t skilled in taking photos of black people. And it’s ok to point that out

To those who commented before knowing the facts: Annie Leibovitz, widely considered one of if not the greatest portrait photographer ever, is on a retainer from Vogue Magazine. She was contracted to take these photos before Justice Jackson was even nominated, much less appointed. So, no, there isn't anyone else they can find to take these photos...black, white, green or purple. This layout was the brainchild of the Vogue editing team with creative input from Justice Jackson herself. Do you know how many sets of eyes this passed before it was published? So please answer me this: if the person behind the camera, the person in front of the camera and the people who paid for and published these photos are pleased with the outcome, why are you so mad???
Be very careful mistaking your opinion for a moral compass. Different doesn't always mean wrong, unless you're criticizing one of the greatest. Then you'll quickly realize you in the minority (figuratively and literally). This ain't IG folks...Annie had $3M reasons to take these shots exactly how you see them. If Justice Jackson wanted something different, she'd flip to front-facing on her iPhone. To Annie doesn't know what she's doing is downright disrespectful. What's next? Does Michael Jordan not jump high enough? smh...

You people complaining about this have ZERO idea what you're talking about. This woman has an exemplary career of photographing many women including black women and to try to "call her out" is completely insane! You also don't know how professional commissioned photography works. She really does not have much of a say in what Vogue decides to do with the RAW images she shoots for them. The photo editor picks the images to be used and the retouchers that work for the publication, make them print ready. As a photographer, I think the images of KBJ, look great within the context of the scene they were taken in, and if the images don't look good (to the average person who really can't tell the difference between good and bad photography in the first place), Vogue Magazine is where you need to place the blame, NOT Annie Leibovitz.

I think this is more so people hiring the wrong Photog for a particular job than the Photog doing a bad job at what was asked. I will say that Annie's style, and past work, makes it obvious why photos turned out poorly. Personally, I probably would have challenged her if I was the lead publisher that ultimately gives green light to use them. As a black person (and Photog myself) I think Annie was sought out and selected to do the job only because of her name and applauded past works. It would have been more appropriate to seek out the right person to do the job instead. I think to how Issa Rae sought out the right people to work on the production involved with Insecure. All/most of them were people that were more so 'right for the job' rather than known for status in the field. Also - not only did this accelerate an interest to use the appropriate methods to capture black skin, it also gave birth to new styles and rise to a new batch of industry leaders in their lane of work. Annie technically could learn how to appropriately capture black skin but I wont entirely hold that over head given the nature of photography. Personally, I mostly know how to capture black people well because 9.75 times out of 10 those are my subjects.

She's known for having done a host of controversial photos, including a Vogue cover some years ago w/ LeBron James and someone else that was considered to have very racist undertones. It's a shame, because with her being a Jewish LGBTQ person, you'd hope she would like, be an ally and have increased sensitivity to the issues of *all* marginalized people; at least that's how I always wish things worked, anyway. Outside of her celebrity work, she went to Bosnia with her partner in the early 90s during the war and captured a famous photo that stuck in my memory, an abandoned bike that had skidded to a stop with a blood trail behind it, I guess they had tried to save a teenager who took a mortar to the back and didn't make it; but even with something like that, I feel like even though it definitely conveyed some of the truth of what was going on over there, it also doesn't feel good to think of it as "art" when it was a scene from a real person's tragedy. Idk, her whole thing is controversy I guess, and I wouldn't expect her to change, so I'd certainly be up for more diversity of photographers getting famous and onto the big magazines and everything, absolutely.

I'm a photographer myself and I do find these call out videos about the photography of Annie Leibovitz just RI-DI-CU-LOUS. She's the absolute top photographer.
What you are actually calling out has a name. It is called colorgrading and harmonising the colours, and it was already done by the great masters such as Da Vinci, and Caravagio, way before photography itself even existed.
This will eventually have a bit of an effect on the skin as well. Cuz you are harmonising the colours so that it doesn't show up as "too warm" or "too cold" in the balance of the entire image.
A black person in the shade will look cooler in color than the exact same black person in full sun.
It's okay to have a different taste. But don't make a complete fool of yourselves by this "calling out" nonsense.
If you can't take it. Dedicate your own life to photography, work very very hard, and even harder than that, to be in the position to take those photographs yourself.
Because then, and only then, it is your decision to make, about how you will colour grade your photographs.

    • @yeahaboutthatthough3656
      @yeahaboutthatthough3656 Місяць тому +3

"Black people just look ashy in the dark," is crazy. Well, I have dedicated my life to photography, portrait painting, and pro makeup artistry for the last 25 years, and I specialize in capturing deeply melanated subjects, namely, dark skinned black people because the industry, by and large, simple doesn't give enough of a sh*t. I have something to say about that.
Rather than understanding the subject and making necessary adjustments for the differences in skin tones, many of my associates, including you, simply apply the same processing methods to dark skin without consideration. This "one-size-fits-all" approach compromises the quality of the images and does a disservice to the subjects. It's akin to dermatologists ignoring the differences between black and white skin, potentially missing signs of skin cancer because it presents differently. Such neglect is not equality; it's a failure to appreciate and respect diversity. But I digress...
In reading your remarks I notice you have a misunderstanding of Color Grading and Harmonizing, and you also have morally incorrect points. If I may:
*On color grading and harmonizing* : While color grading is essential for achieving a specific aesthetic in photography, it should never result in subjects appearing underexposed, washed out, or unnatural. Proper color grading must enhance, not diminish, the natural features of the subject so if faces have become mutilated in the process, it's a failure. Comparing modern photography techniques to the work of classical painters like Da Vinci and Caravaggio is misleading because their mediums and purposes differ significantly. Painters had complete control over every element, whereas photographers work with existing light and real subjects. Effective photography techniques must account for the varying effects of light on different skin tones, ensuring that lighting and post-processing respect and enhance the natural complexion of all subjects. Oversimplified statements, such as a black person looking cooler in the shade than in full sun, fail to recognize the skill needed to use and modify light to achieve accurate and beautiful portrayals in any setting.
*On the moral failure of indifference* : Dismissing concerns as “RI-DI-CU-LOUS” ignores the legitimate observations about representation and sensitivity that critics are raising. It's crucial to acknowledge and respect the perspectives of those who have been underrepresented and worse, intentionally misrepresented in Western artwork and popular media for the better part of 400 years. Additionally, implying that only top professionals have the right to critique or make artistic decisions fosters elitism and gatekeeping, which undermines the value of constructive criticism and the voices of those affected by the representation. Furthermore, there is a need for greater cultural sensitivity and understanding of the historical context regarding the portrayal of Black people in media. Photographers must be aware of how their work impacts and reflects the communities they are seeking to again attention for photographing. It's a big responsibility, whether or not you're aware.
As professional photographers and artists, it's our job to engage with feedback from the communities directly impacted by our work, continually improve our techniques to ensure reasonable representation, and we're meant to be willing to adapt our methods and styles to best practices to ensure our choices don't inadvertently harm or misrepresent our.subjects. That doesn't mean it should come at the cost of creative freedom, it just means care enough about your subject to care enough about your whether or not your technique makes them look unintentionally crazy or not. Lebovitz's white and medium and brown toned subjects don't look crazy. Zendaya, Serena Williams, Oprah all look stunning in her photography...her darkest ones like Ketanji, Lupita and Viola look a mess and didn't have to.

Y'all are stupid for calling out Annie, thats her style of photography, in Annie's world view, everyone's skin tone is dull white or black, its how she's been shooting for years its how she sees the world. If you dont like it move along. But dont pull your reverse racism bullshit on her.
In Art there's no "how to do" anything every artist has how they see the world and we are previledged to witness it, wether we see the world the same way is none of their buisness.
Annie is a great photographer, and i aspire for my worke to be like hers some day

Annie is the photographer, not the editor. You call her out because her name is more recognizable than Vogue editor. The push should be on the person who hires the photographer. That's Wintour.

It’s called art…just how you look tells me all I need to know not a hair out of place neat appearance……. it’s even the imperfection that are perfect….i love Viola Davis and Lupita’s cover it Raw and it’s them they’re not less beautiful….when you wake up you look like this it’s just being amplified and it’s simply art….if you can’t appreciate this you can’t appreciate yourself flaws and all…..these women will still get men get married you know why?? They’re not hiding themselves to please society’s criticism…..you have so much to learn young lady these women are mature they know theses moments should be photographed as much as possible so they can look at the beauty of these moments……take lots of pictures young people flaws and all because at 90 you’ll appreciate the beauty of YOU….and it’s simply THEM

I'm not a black photographer but I am a professional fine art portrait photographer of 20 years and I agree. These shots are mediocre at best and you all deserve far better representation through portraits. I, for one, would absolutely love to have more people of color in my portfolio. I've never had any issues whatsoever shooting with darker skin tones.

Sorry I do not agree and I’m a black woman. The only unflattering picture to me was of Simone biles. Leibovitz has a dark contrast to all her photos. A subtly. If you want something different then go with a different photographer. As a black woman we need to stop perpetuating this narrative that we are victims, because to say those pictures of Viola Davis and lupita are bad is insanity. They are beautiful. Deal with self hate before creating an opinion. Shame on you The Root doing more harm to the community spreading a narrative that shouldn’t exist.

Black women hate them selves. Because I working in photography for 10 years these pictures are beautiful poetic and very strong. You'll don't know art. Being dolled up in a suit isn't the essence of blackness its the rich tones and body and those women looked like my sister, my aunt and friends Im from the Caribbean. You'll like fake mockup blackness. This piare deep and rich and say pure true expression

Omg... "why not photograph in natural lighting..." it IS a mix of artificial and natural light. I find it rather funny that so many of you guys really really are desperate to bash on Leibovitz, because you just want a black photographer to take pictures of black people, but the criticism is just complete nonsense. I'd guess most of you are barely capable of holding a camera in the right way.

Imagine if white people said they need more white people behind the cameras for them...... I feel like people want to just be upset over nothing especially when some darker tones actually send a rather fitting atmosphere for certain photos.
