  • I've been growing cut flowers for four years now. It's sort of funny for me to reflect back on our early years because I can look back and see with such clarity the mistakes that I made back then- and trust me, there were a lot of them.
Now, believe it or not I am actually thankful for those early failures because in the process I learned a lot. But those were definitely some hard learned lessons that came with plenty of heartache and frustration. And if I can spare you from experiencing at least some of that same frustration- well, in my books, I'd consider that a win.
That's why in today's video, I'm sharing with you 6 of the most common mistakes that I see flower farmers making. These are the same mistakes that I made early on in my journey + hopefully after watching this video today, these will be the mistakes that you avoid in your own flower-growing journey.

I am in the process of starting a flower farm in northeast Ohio and have a June wedding shower as my first event. I really appreciate and love your videos they have already helped me with my decision to start smaller and grow from there. Thank you!

Lol I hate hardening off seedlings! I have to remind myself HOURLY that 10 days of hardening off is worth it after months of growing these babies and not to flush months of work down the toilet because I was lazy one day 😬

@@twosistersflowerfarm 😂 it’s always so weird to me that I can be a helicopter parent to seedlings for months, but as soon as it’s time for them to head outdoors I’m all “you’re on your own ya dingbats, don’t call, don’t write 👋✌️😘”

night time temps in the 60s before planting out warm weather stuff lolololol its july 2 here and still hitting 45-50 at night

Same here in Oregon, late July. I am picking ripe blueberries, apricots, tomatoes, and zucchini... Overnight low is stil top 40's, sometimes a low 50. If I waited to start my garden till the nights were 60+, I'd be setting out tomato seedlings in August! 😂 But she did have some good points - like always planning for 10-20% loss.

Thank you so much for sharing your information. I'm soaking this all up like a sponge. I am having great success with mixed zinnias and am planning to plant to great bouquets for a friend's wedding in 2025. (I'll use purchased flowers and filler greenery as a back up) I'm so excited for the challenge. Growing out of raised beds in my back yard it is SO fulfilling.

2023 living in zone 6a WNY if I waited until 60* night temps I wound t have planted until June. LFD April 30 th. I could see for germinating seeds but for instance sunflowers grew well for my first time growing with tight spacing. I 'm a home gardener. In the field it may need 60* but near our house it is warmer. Somethings to consider. And experimenting is always good. Thanks for this info and your openness.

Finally detailed info from a flower farmer that isn't all about selling! I'm a hobby grower (for now at least), in year 3, and you're so right! I've made mistakes and what is difficult is that you have to wait a year often to try a new approach! Your detailed comments help me cut that learning curve years at a time!!

Hi. Thank you so much for your wonderful advice and sharing such valuable info. I'm in New Zealand, into my second year of growing flowers having been given 4 large boxes of unnamed dahlia rhizomes. Now, with the help of sister who is surgeon by day and gardening helper by night we have a very productive paddock. your help is priceless, thanks for putting yourself out there and sharing so freely.

While this will be my second year selling it is not my first year growing. I definitely relate to not wanting put myself (business) out there with fears of not having promised product. Also have a real fear of being left with product and red in profit. So I will make a social media site and get started. 😬

I plant my seeds in a few different seed trsys in case I lose a whole tray due to water logging, insects , draught , pests or sunburn .
As well a succession planting. I also plant them in different spots in the ground for the same reasons.

Good day ! Just discorvered your channel, i look foward to joining ya ll inthis crazy journey, i too am a dairy farmer-morphing into a flower farmer for my retierement project . Thank you for the tips! I'm finding the juggling of time between the two -dairy and flower harder than anticipated , dairy always coming for, i sometimes miss opportunities on the flower side. Have a great day!

Hey there! Always happy to connect with fellow dairy & flower combo farmers 😀😉 The time balance is so hard! I can relate to that so deeply! With a little practice I’ve gotten better at prioritizing what needs to be done and just letting everything else be what it is 💛 Best of luck to you this season! 🌻✨
