  • Recorded a few days before his 27th birthday Joe Henderson recorded "In 'N Out", his 3rd album as leader, and a really solid hard bop side. In this video we check out Serenity, a really beautiful tune, that I hope you will love as much as I do.
I'm Tim Beau Bennett, and I'm making videos about jazz history. Sometimes I talk about jazz musicians, sometimes the songs, and sometimes about genres. I play jazz guitar, though I would call myself a keen amateur, rather than a professional. These videos are a work in progress, but there are many more to come - so please subscribe and let me know what you'd like to see in the comments!

Hey Tim - really enjoying these little listening parties. Not that you have to cover this but one of my all time favorite albums is Know What I Mean? - Cannonball Adderley w/ Bill Evans

Thank you so much, another great video!!
I think Joe played that a little bit different melody transcribed here in a later record, a trio live but I don't remember wich one. It seems that he loved to evolutionate his compositions!

As someone who's relatively new to listening to and playing jazz, these listening parties are a great help and a lot of fun. Keep 'em coming :)

Perfect! There must be hard bop in heaven! I was fortunate enough to see Joe twice in the 1990s.

JOE HENDERSON WAS ONE OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE SECOND TO COLTRANE AND VERY MUCH UNDERRATED TENOR SAXIST,AND A GREAT COMPOSER AND ARRANGER OF BIG BAND AS WELL AS QUARTETS,SEXTETS,SEPTETS,AN EXTRAORDINARY MUSICIAN, RIP

Great video! The title track on In 'n Out I'd consider post-bop, with the modern Coltrane-esque quartal blues (with McCoy ripping on it), but the rest is more traditional (very good) hard bop. Another good record to hear Joe and Kenny and Richard Davis on pushing the limits of jazz is Andrew Hill's "Point of Departure" (also with Tony Williams and Eric Dolphy).

Joe is my fav tenor player (after Trane)
great choice. Also, his 90s albums are as good as his 60s hard bop stuff

Loving the listening party format so far! Would love to hear you talk about anything from The Blues and the Abstract Truth. Such a one-of-a-kind cast with really tight performances all around. All original tracks too. Thanks and keep it up!

SOME PEOPLE IN THE COMMENT SECTION ARE ASKING FOR MORE MODERN VIDEOS, THIS IS MODERN, IT DOESN’T MATTER THAT IT WAS RECORDED IN 1964,IT’S WAY AHEAD OF IT’S TIME, THIS IS MODERN JAZZ,THE STRAIGHT AHEAD JAZZ OF TODAY IS NO DIFFERENT THAN THIS,YOU JUST GET A FRESHER RECORDING,BECAUSE OF TODAYS MODERN TECHNOLOGY, AT THAT TIME WE WERE STILL IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS ERA,1964 MUSICIANS WERE PLAYING TO A DIFFERENT DRUMBEAT,ESPECIALLY COLTRANE.

Really enjoying this new format! I imagine because it is less labour intensive, it will give you an opportunity to do more - which is good news for us. Love the way you share your knowledge by the way, always very interesting. Thanks

Could you do a video on some more modern albums/players. Anything about Chris Potter, Joshua Redman or Michael Brecker. Would also love to see some stuff about Cannonball. Loving all the videos man, keep up the great work 🤩

Very much enjoy the format. How about some more Richard Davis, since you didn't love his solo here? Maybe a tune with Andrew Hill?

Reallly loving it, like a remote jazz enthusiast gathering, even the term listening party brings joy. Let's keep on
Slight edit here: Is this tune somehow similar to Joy Spring, especially in the first couple of bars? Really wondering , is it?

Joe Henderson was a saxophonist equal to or superior to John Coltrane o Sonny Rollins
