“Is this metal?” I don’t know. But it’s avenged sevenfold for sure. This album was a (successful) attempt to insert their music into the mainstream radio & media. They have ballads, pure metal, hard rock, sad songs, crazy punk rock songs, screaming, solos, melodies, killer drums, fantastic guitar work.. they have the lot.
It's a radio song, but it's still metal. Avenged Sevenfold tend to change stylistically between albums, and this particular album is the one where they lean into simple catchy hooks that will translate well in front of large crowds, where some of their faster or more intricate material from earlier albums may not
This song, and the whole album, is more hard rock than it is metal… it’s AC/DC meets 90s Metallica with A7X’s distinct sound (Matt’s voice, Syn amd Zacky’s guitar tones). Their earlier work is considered metal, they broadened their sound over the years as Matt developed and played around with his voice. Their newest work leans more towards prog. I would say City Of Evil (2005) and their self titled album (2007) are their best “metal” work, their first 2 albums are “metalcore” (mostly harsh vocals with clean vocals mixed in), so not as accessible. Hail To The King is definitely their most accessible work. If you want to explore them more, I would say avoid the “reaction channel” trope of diving straight into A Little Piece Of Heaven… people suggest that one for the shock factor more than the musicality (as good as it is), go for pretty much anything from 2005-2010 (eg. The Beast and the Harlot, Bat Country, Afterlife, Critical Acclaim, Nightmare, Not Ready To Die).
I love A7X and yes, there really is a lot more from them to listen to. Buried Alove, Afterlife, Beast and the Harlot..oh the list goes on and on. Thanks for this reaction I quite enjoyed it.
This is Heavy Metal, in the vein of the classic first tunes of the genre. People use to associate Metal with screamings, the actually this song is a perfect example of the first kind of songs this genre produced. Although many would disagree because metal has evolved a lot over time, the fact is that in the 70s and 80s this kind of songs were considered Heavy Metal. It's also worth pointing out that the line between Hard Rock and Heavy Metal is so thin and in many cases is very hard to say categorically it's one genre or the other.
By the way, if you enjoyed this classic more soft side of metal, you should check out Ghost (maybe Dance Macabre is a good way to start). Many many people would consider sacrilege to say they're metal, but they can be included 100% as it's very similar to some 70s metal songs.
I was there in the 70's....and there was no metal! Everything got lumped into rock/heavy rock. Metal became a retrograde description from the 80's onwards/downwords. Metal was the subtraction of a lot of blues & melody from rock...then with MTV all the subgenre's arrived for picky clan people. The 70's covered the classic Purple, Zep, Sabbath, Whitesnake, Rainbow, AC/DC, UFO, Priest, Styx, Journey, Foreigner, Angel, Gary Moore, Uriah Heep and many many other weird & conventional creations - there were no limits to what you could try. Progressive rock was perhaps the only set variation from heavy at the time.
If you want to explore more from A7X I suggest you go back to some of the earlier albums. Songs like Afterlife, Critical Acclaim, Bat Country and never to forget, A Little Piece of Heaven.
As much as I love ALPOH no one should listen to it to discover A7x, go listen to like 5 or 6 songs so you know what avenged really is and then go for the masterpiece that it is
@@artzaphy7148 Agreed sometimes I think it’s suggested first for pure shock factor and sadly I’ve seen some people turned off of A7X for just that reason. Definitely listen to an array of different songs then do ALPOH🎶
They're very good live performers which is why I think they went with frontman rather than lead singer. M shadows definitely knows how to get the crowd going, the fan base are essentially their 2nd family. Especially after the Rev passed away. These guys are also a lot of different genres, they do things that sound country to some, but they also have some stuff with screaming. Which is the reason Matt's vocals have changed over the years, he had to get surgery and so now he doesn't scream anymore and sounds a bit different. Regardless this is a great band that always comes out with great music
if you're curious how mr shadow can do with voice, my suggestion with my favorite song Dear god, This means war, so far away, and wish you were here his voice is unique to me i can't stop listening to his songs! Even though i have more songs to suggestion like Shepherd of fire are dope!
one of my great friends dad' is a world renown jazz musician. when you ask him about Avenged Sevenfold, he is beside himself. Every time i see him, and they come on the playlist, he will go off about how they are the most talented and future proof rock/metal band of all time. i try to bring coheed and cambria up, but he won't have it. this guy has run with steely dan and christopher cross as a studio and tour musician, and he believes that we will still be talking about Avenged 100 years from now. They are epic, but in ways that tick boxes for casual listeners and serious musicians alike. i tend to agree with him, since i don't know any Avenged Sevenfold album that i didn't like. Nightmare is my absolute favorite, but i dont discriminate!
Metal is a VERY broad genre, probobly the broadest out there. Since it stems from hard rock and is generally just defined by being “hard hard rock” there’s soooo many ways to go for bands. Judas Priest is metal. Iron Maiden is metal. Black Sabbath is metal. The same way Cannibal Corpse, Slipknot, Mayhem is metal. And the music don’t sound particular alike except it’s based on heavy distorted guitars n heavy drums. Other than that it’s like very much a sea of different kinds of metal. But as many have said - Avenged changes a lot from album to album. If you want something you more associate to metal I’d check out their album Waking the Fallen.
Heelllooo~, im so happy you reacted to Avenged Sevenfold. Its my Favorite band!! Tho this is a good sing. I would recommend either Nightmare, or my fave, A little Piece of Heaven . Its a wonderful song ! Tho...the storry behind it is quite....interesting. 😅😬 i still love it. Lol please reacr to those ones as well, keep up the great work.
Yes as a front man m.shadows might be one of the best in the world he gets evryone pumped up but lets not forget he was also nominated as the best singer in 2011
Listen to live perfomances and you will see they are metal, God Hates Us - RockamRing 2011, Critical Acclaim live LBC. Very happy you found A7X and the amazing M Shadows.
The "Metallica tribute" album lol. My favorites of theirs are Nightmare, Stage, this newest one Life Is But a Dream... and Avenged Sevenfold. P.S. maybe check out some Symphony X - Russell Allen is a fantastic singer and the rest of the band is awesome too (you loved him in your Ayreon reaction). They have heavier songs and also more ballady ones, some with more of a neoclassical feel etc. The Odyssey is a monstrous song 24mins so something like Awakenings (one of my favorites) might be a better choice.
Avenged Sevenfold is a band with massive range. This song and album as a whole is there most generic and basic music. Many love it for that, but to me its not the best look at who Avenged is. If you want "metal" the albums "city of evil" "waking the fallen" and even their "self titled album" have more heavy songs on them. It just so happens the band just released a new album, first one in 6 years, on June 2nd. The album is called "Life is but a dream" and is by far their most crazy album yet. Crazy in a good way, with such a variety of songs and styles. From that album I would recommend the songs, "Cosmic" "Mattel" "Ordinary" and "Nobody". I think you will be really impressed with the changes the band has gone through, they have been evolving every single album they have come out with. The instruments are killer and there is a large variety of strings, brass, and piano used on the new album. Please check more of avenged out, I think you will be very happy you gave them a go.
This is Metal. METAL IS NEVER TOO LOUD. Make their ears bleed! Also, why hasn't anyone done a montage of King Charles to this song? That would be too funny.
This is definitely metal, with a really strong groove in it. This song, with its epic windup at the beginning, is, in my opinion, on the same musical & lyrical level as Metallica's "Enter Sandman"...
Their songs that got radio play like this one gets them accusations of selling out. He also injured his voice and a whole new approach to his vocals. Healthier approach. But it's still him
Like many said, the album where this comes from is really more a "tribute" to old metal and hard rock and all. To really have more of a ... metal sound, you would need to look at "The Beast and The Harlot", or even "Nightmare". These would definitely more "fit the bill". but still, great song and especially live. really more of an anthem
Not as popular band but I think it'd be cool if you could react to Brutal Rush from Dehumanizing Itatrain Worship and break down the vocals of Kiryu Zhang. It's an insane song but I see potential to learn from it.
As any genre is, metal is pretty broad but they also inserted themselves into the industry with a pretty heavy and screamo album which I think is what got them labeled as metal. I mean I would still put it in metal. Waking the Fallen is their debut and best album I think. You're going to get more screaming but it's well done.
i'm seeing this video little too late but if u want to hear more from this band i suggest: nightmare (official music video) critical acclaim (live in LBC) burn it down
Non-metalheads never heard this songs or many other songs we consider essentials. The same way I've never listened to many hip-hop songs its fans consider absolute classics
Waiting room for all the ppl telling Ken that this album was their attempt as a "black album" while you all cram down his throat how transcendent City of Evils is/was.
yeah this is very metal, specifically it's somewhere between early metal and thrash, compare 80's metalica. If you're not super familiar with the genre and only have newer stuff to reference you're probably thinking of subgenres that focus on specific elements like speed or throat vocals like black metal. All of those are subgenres that grew out of what these guys are doing just they're much later than the earlier examples like iron maiden and judas priest and metalica (though metalica is thrash metal). This is more like what metal was 40 years ago before it balkanized into eleventy thousand subgenres.
A7X's original drummer, The Rev, died at the end of 2009 before their Nightmare album was released. The Rev was integral in their writing process and, sadly it seems, A7X has been chasing a new sound since. People will tell you that they've broadened or are evolving but losing the Rev hurt them unimaginably. To hear A7X's "metal" you need to visit their early albums : Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, Waking the Fallen or City of Evil. Great stuff
If anything, LIBAD sounds exactly like what the Rev would've wrote. Just listen to Pinkly Smooth, which is the band that the Rev and Syn were previously in.
well there are like 10+ types of metal from just metal to thrash to death metal and lots of others and yes M Shadows is one of the best metal vocalists ever also A7X is not a typical metal band and they play with their sounds more than staying in their lane so to speak lol
its heavy metal sorry buddy. you can't square it with rock. the lyrical message is not soft. its as metal as it gets. his voice goes to a growl more than it stays in a gruff.
I always found the way hail to the king is sung, is a way that almost commands respect each time it approaches the chorus, I find it really well done
I don't care what genre this is. Avenged Sevenfold always delivers masterful composition. One of the few bands that I always stop and listen to.
It's metal simple 😂
“Is this metal?” I don’t know. But it’s avenged sevenfold for sure. This album was a (successful) attempt to insert their music into the mainstream radio & media.
They have ballads, pure metal, hard rock, sad songs, crazy punk rock songs, screaming, solos, melodies, killer drums, fantastic guitar work.. they have the lot.
Exactly, one thing i fucking love from them and respect is each album is very different

Not ready to die to me is juste one of the best song ever, from a cod zombie player 👌🔥
Even if Hail is my second favourite song of all time, I agree with your statement.
Music is never defined as metal due to the singing. It's always the instruments and that's why this is still metal.
Is it really? I mean metal isn't just screaming is singing too so i don't really under that comment if this is metal, cuz it is
As a first exposure to A7X you should absolutely listen to some stuff from Live in the LBC, like Critical Acclaim
I second this! Critical Acclaim is "classic" A7X ( if there is such a thing).
Any LBC is legit
I love A7X and yes, there really is a lot more from them to listen to. Buried Alove, Afterlife, Beast and the Harlot..oh the list goes on and on. Thanks for this reaction I quite enjoyed it.

My favorite A7X song is "Tonight the World Dies". Also, I recommend you the live version of "Roman Sky" at the Grammy Museum
If you want to explore more from A7X I suggest you go back to some of the earlier albums.
Songs like Afterlife, Critical Acclaim, Bat Country and never to forget, A Little Piece of Heaven.

Avenged Sevenfold - Critical Acclaim Live In The LBC
if you're curious how mr shadow can do with voice, my suggestion with my favorite song
Dear god,
This means war,
so far away,
and wish you were here

Another vote for Critical Acclaim (Live at the LBC)!
"A little piece of heaven" from Avenged Sevenfold next time? :D Please?
Afterlife is their best sing imo. Just a masterpiece.
I love that no music is off limits to you. Awesome
The "Metallica tribute" album lol. My favorites of theirs are Nightmare, Stage, this newest one Life Is But a Dream... and Avenged Sevenfold. Love this song and band!!
Holy Avenged Sevenfold on this channel finally lets gooooo
We have to send you to “critical acclaim” live in the lbc. That’s some prime M Shadows
Avenged Sevenfold is a band with massive range. This song and album as a whole is there most generic and basic music. Many love it for that, but to me its not the best look at who Avenged is. Please do So Far Away by Avenged Sevenfold please it shows more of his vocal range
They are usually put in the category of 'progressive metal', either way they are amazing
Avenged sevenfold released a new album earlier this month.
You should check some of that out. People have mixed feelings about it but I love it 👌
You should listen to God Hates Us from Rock Am Ring 2011. M Shadows vocals are insane
This is Metal. METAL IS NEVER TOO LOUD. Make their ears bleed!
Also, why hasn't anyone done a montage of King Charles to this song? That would be too funny.
As a English man I want this as our nation anthem 🇬🇧 😊
This is definitely metal, with a really strong groove in it. This song, with its epic windup at the beginning, is, in my opinion, on the same musical & lyrical level as Metallica's "Enter Sandman"...
Next afterlife at the LBC plss
Their songs that got radio play like this one gets them accusations of selling out. He also injured his voice and a whole new approach to his vocals. Healthier approach. But it's still him
Avenged Sevenfold - The Stage 🔥
Hey Ken, have you heard Dan Vasc doing Sound of Silence???? Well do so you won't be disappointed. 🥰
3 others to consider from earlier albums. Almost Easy & Dear God & Nightmare. 😮
I love this song so much
Avenged sevenfold - God Hates Us Live at Rock Am Ring 2011.
I remember when this came out Syn Gates said they wanted an AC/DC =GNR groove.
Not as popular band but I think it'd be cool if you could react to Brutal Rush from Dehumanizing Itatrain Worship and break down the vocals of Kiryu Zhang. It's an insane song but I see potential to learn from it.

So many better song to show off his talent. Anything from their Live in the LBC. More and then some more A7X, please.
Synister Gates the lead guitarist was voted one of the top ten greatest players of all time. Fun fact him and the lead singer married twin sisters.
i'm seeing this video little too late but if u want to hear more from this band i suggest:
nightmare (official music video)
critical acclaim (live in LBC)
burn it down
This song ment to be loud! Gracias.
If you're gonna do these guys again, I recommend Bat Country.
Definitely try Nightmare, Bat Country or even Welcome to the Family for a different vibe😅
A little bit of heaven is great song to listen to
He is the one!
More A7X please
Avenged sevenfold is one of the single greatest bands of all time. Maybe also listen to buried alive
Sorry your analysis is very professional sir !! I always jump to conclusions. Peace!!!
I'm very surprised you haven't heard this!! Never too loud!!
Start with some of there first big tracks like bat country
I'd say it's mostly power metal, with some rock like qualities. But I think it does still qualify as metal, even if just barely.
M. Shadows is an amazing front man. Imo
That guitar is definitely more metal than rock
Thing I enjoy about this band is they sound "European metal" not American. (Not a slight on American metal but this song rocks)
i subscribed 🤙🏻
Reacciona a So far Away pls, es dedicada al baterista que fallecio.

This is called heavy metal

Highly disagree. RIP to The Rev though ❤

This song makes me drink Beer faster. I approve.
I wouldn't sweat the rabbithole of genre or subgenre. It's just a way to get the nerds arguing and divided.
hallo i am from Indonesian ❤
pure metal
It IS Metal
🤘🤩
well there are like 10+ types of metal from just metal to thrash to death metal and lots of others and yes M Shadows is one of the best metal vocalists ever also A7X is not a typical metal band and they play with their sounds more than staying in their lane so to speak lol
The two best songs ever are The Stage and This means war imho.
Synyster Gates My Guitar Hero 🤘
This song is fairly tame compared to some of their others
Listeb to the beast and the harlot
I don't know if you agree but the guitar sounds almost classical, reminds me of Hrimaly.
"scratching the surface"? Man.... wait until IF you come across "A Little Piece of Heaven". 😅😅🤘🤘
Listen to older stuff. Bat Country for starters
You better listen to more of their old stuff before you even think about their latest album. 😅
It falls in a sub section of Neu metal
NO IT DONT WHAT THE FUCK
Its a guitar workout fushu!!!
A7x used to be metal till they wanted an album on the radio 😁
holy shit, Conan?
Technically it is metal, but softest category of metal.
They’re referred to as a “progressive metal” band
Deep Purple led to Black Sabbath as Metallica led to Avenged Sevenfold in my opinion
Metal doesn’t have to be hard vocals. Black Sabbath is one of the pioneers of metal and Ozzy is not hard vocals at all.
Y are intimidated !!!
Is A7X a metal band?
I dunno. Let's listen to "God Hates Us" and see.
Hm, yep. They're pretty damn metal.
its heavy metal sorry buddy. you can't square it with rock. the lyrical message is not soft. its as metal as it gets. his voice goes to a growl more than it stays in a gruff.
This is mainstream metal aka active rock, mainstream rock. More melodic vocally and instruments than thrash metal or death metal . Lots of subgenres.
definitely not the song/album that I'd recommend from them
Nightmare would be a better song to react to. Hail to the king is good but lacks a bit of personality
