Carving a Dolphin from a Pearl Mussel Shell

- This is the process that i use to make mother-of-pearl carvings! It only a rotary tool, flap sanders, a diamond coated cut-off wheel, and a buffing wheel, as well as a bit of sandpaper! Using these steps, you can make a mother-of-pearl carving of just about anything that you can think of; I often make dolphins, manatees, sharks, and much more using this process! Once you get the hang of it, you can easily make one from start to finish in under an hour! Also, you can truly use any shell that you desire, including fresh and saltwater mussels, abalone, volutes, lucine, and many, many more! Remember to ALWAYS use a proper mask when carving shells!

1. 220 grit rotary flap sander to shave outside of shell
2. Whetsand shell with 600 grit sandpaper, then 1000 grit, then 2000 grit to polish.
3. Diamond rotary wheel to carve
4. Buffing wheel and red rouge polish
Question- 10:02 What tool would you use to smooth out the rough edges near the dolphin tail?

I get rid of the rough edges by hand sanding all of the tight spots that my rotary tool can't reach, and to do that I generally just wet sand using 220 grit sandpaper and then just polish the same way as the rest. Hope this helps, and I hope yours come out great! 😊

now i know what to do with all them clam shells i find along the rivers , streams , creeks, and lakes, the OTTERs show me where the clam beds are at, so that if i need a bit to eat or some bait i know wheres it at, now shells are no longer a waste product, that was a great video thank you for making it,, be safe, be strong, be free, be blessed

Wear a dust mask when sanding and cutting these shells, unless your wanting future lung problems.
I literally never carve anything, rocks, shells, or wood, without a respirator on

Theo, could you tell us & show us what kind of respirator to get for cutting shells & rocks. I love your videos. I want to start doing this, I just don't know which mask or respirator is right for this kind of craft.

hallo, im a goldsmith student from Belgium who is trying to learn how to carve mother of pearl. what tools do you need to carve mother of pearl? I want to carve a cloud out of it wich means it will be a quite thick peace of mother of pearl so I would need to carve grooves into it to give it a "3d" effect. I was thinking I would need diamond burs but I feel like it might be to rough? I dont know tho. So if you please could suggest me what kind of burs i would need in order to carve it. A push to the right direction would be major help and i would really appreciate it

Where do you get the abalone shells ? One more thing, is the dust up breath dangerous while working and cutting the shell?
Yes extremely it will l never leave your lungs
Do I need to draw on the shell, before using the diamond cut? How do you know where to cut?
If you do it enough, I'm sure you get a good idea of how to do it. Or just a good mental visual or something. I'm sure you could easily use something to mark out your shape. Just do a test spot to make sure its something you can buff out!
