Genuinely never knew the outside of the shell was just as beautiful as the inside. I've never seen one polished. Thank you for teaching me something new and well done!
Word to the wise. The dust created from sanding Abalone shell is extremely toxic if inhaled. The pores of your skin can absorb the toxins from the dust making you extremely sick as well. Proper ventilation and respirator are most definitely required and recommended.
Correction: Abalone dust IS NOT TOXIC, it's the calcium carbonate (crystalline) that is the irritant, again NOT TOXIC... Wow many of you are just plain stupid.
I agree with a previous commenter. I respirator is always required when sanding anything. And shell can be worse than most things. It can be poisonous plus the dust acts like asbestos in the lungs. A lot of shells are not poisonous. But all of them can give you emphysema and /or grey lung.
There is a reason you have not seen anyone do this before. That is because it is highly, highly, highly toxic and dangerous, not only to breathe that particulate matter, but also for it to be absorbed through your skin. It is a grave mistake for this individual to post this video like it is a simple DIY project without posting a single warning!
@@bpharaoh2884 dramatic much? Sea shells are calcium carbonate. He probably dissolved it with acetic acid - that's vinegar. He really didn't polish the shell, he dissolved all the calcium carbonate and is left with just the nacre (the shiny stuff you see on the inside only if the shell is intact)
Well professor, I can guarantee you that fermented juice will not dissolve the shell material above the mother of pearl. I also watched him use abrasives to get off whatever was left after he bathed it in whatever nondescript acid he used. My concern is that he did not describe any necessary precautions, PPE or products he employed in the process, but don’t let experience or common sense stand in your way, knock yourself out and have a go at it, and please don’t let me know how it turns out or try to inform others with ignorance if you can help it. ✌️
Every single souvenir shop in New Zealand has at least a dozen for sale. Abalone in NZ is named Paua pronounced PA WAH, however, the meat is black in colour but absolutely beautiful to eat.
Stunning! It is gorgeous, I love the colors. I have a big one and it's heavy. Now I could only imagine what it would look like if it was polished like this one. Beautiful! Great job 🎉
Video needs a warning, careless handling of acid (that ate the crome in their sink), I really hope they wore proper PPE when sanding. The shell turned out beautiful but beauty isn't worth the health danger of improper handling of acid and inhaling shell dust that is toxic.
jleverheart somehow, I missed what kind of acid they used, and it wasn't in the description. I looked twice and just figured the liquid was hydrogen peroxide? Do you know and if so, would you please let me know?

It's funny to think that in NZ we use them as ashtrays, for jewellery etc, like it's super common here, I've got one on my front deck for an ashtray, actually 2 I think plus a huge pipi/tuatua shell with a partial pearl in it somewhere that we found at the local beach
Shelfish can bioaccumulate lead and mercury from their environment and deposit it in their shells to keep it out of their biogically sensitive parts. Hence the warning below may be valid, depending on the local pollutants.
@@hans_Polishing had you said 5 days I wouldn't have been surprised. That was a lot to do by hand. A dremel in the early stages would save a lot of work.
I'm no expert in shell polishing but I think a power tool like and angle grinder with a flap wheel on it would be a better option for removing the outside layer of crud. Certainly faster and less effort than a file.
Sir, notice the direction in which the file teeth are pointing. In order to not wear out your file so quickly do NOT go AGAINST the file teeth. One direction. Lift your file like a paint brush.

I didn’t do any of that grinding and scraping all I did was soak it in CLR in a bucket for a couple hours and holy shit. It took it all off pretty much if you leave the small ones in too long they get too thin and they started deteriorate.
Are there shells where the holes group the right side? Or do all of the species have them up the left side? What does the other half of the shell look like?
Shellfish shells contain heavy metals. When working with them you need a RESPIRATOR not just a mask as the partials are to fine, plus full PPE. Depending on the type of acid used the creator of this video should have at the very least have been wearing gloves of not a mask up to respirator and for the strongest acids full PPE. that's because this isn't the outside, it's the outside ground off until the inside is visible instead

No gloves when using acid either! Yikes 😬

The shell came out beautiful! It's so smooth and shiny! I've never seen anyone polish an abalone shell before.

I've worked with lots of different abalone, be careful breathing the dust, and yup, it is a spectacular material!
This shell is extremely toxic if inhaled. Don't do inside and wear a good respirator.
To think all those beautiful blues and greens were hidden under there. This world is truly amazing 😍
Beautiful job. But be sure to wear a respirator so you're not breathing the dust.
My mom used to use those shells for ashtrays. We have several of them. Got them in Avilia Beach, CA I wish I had them now.
I'm guessing this happened over a couple days? My hands would hurt so bad from all that sanding. Your dedication to see it through is impressive.

The acid was most likely just acetic acid - that's vinegar. Sea shells are calcium carbonate. Not too difficult to dissolve them.
