Honestly I think that’s why Black Doom keeps bringing Shadow to this place in the game, throughout the story Black Doom wants to put Shadow under his control by using his rage and Radical Highway was when his hate for humanity was at an all time high.
I love how this contrasts the original version of Radical Highway “Vengeance Is Mine”. That version feels chaotic; filled with hatred and burning anger. But this version sounds more like pure determination. Nothing, not even being back in the place where he was at his lowest, will make Shadow turn his back on humanity. He WILL stop Black Doom. That alone makes me love this version.
I might be reading too much into it, but the cylinder with springs making Shadow ascend rather than descend like in the original cements that he's rising above his past.
@@ThatMetroidGuy Also, the final Corkscrew for Radical highway in Act 1 also does something interesting: for Both SA2 and the Frontiers version of Radical highway, the corkscrew ends at the bottom, launching Shadow upwards toward the goal ring. But for this version, the Corkscrew ends at the top, upside down, sending him downward. This Twisted version of the Radical highway retains a lot of elements of the original but the changes might actually mean something.
The difference between the original and the remixed acts is quite interesting. The original for obvious reasons felt angry at everything. These remixes sound more like Shadow responding: "People keep asking if I'm back. Yeah, I'm thinking I'm back!"
Hearing this in a full stage after the entire game shows radical highway is basically the devil(from the bible)'s lair, and finally taking the fight to him is CINEMA
@@Sonicfalcon16oh no I meant like Generations has 6 types of radical highways including the 3ds version because we have the little segments in some of the stages in Shadow Generations and then the actual level
Tbh this music feels so good as a final level like it is in the game they portray it as so well as a finale in this game even the way how cutscenes builds up to the final stage especially since it’s called vengeance is mine
While this stage doesn't mean much to Shadow as Radical Highway was a means of evading G.U.N in SA2, to us, this level was Shadow's playable debut. To the players, it is iconic to Shadow. Now, it is his final level/obstacle as he makes his way through this mindscape and confronts Black Doom once more
I mean, Radical Highway was also where we see Shadow declare his vengeance on humanity. This is where we see Shadow more or less at his worst, and Black Doom's use of Radical Highway could be seen as him trying to get Shadow back into that kind of headspace.
It’s sorta poetic the devil uses radical highway as the place to face shadow as it was the stage where his revenge phase was at his highest. Doom uses this stage to remember him of his uncontrolled hatred. But then you get final phase Radical Highway and the theme doesn’t sound angry or distorted like the previous versions, it sounds upbeat, determined. Final. Shadow has gained control of his power and is not willing to be controlled by anyone anymore.
Anyone here played the whole Like A Dragon series up to 7 and loved how it felt to end that game with the Millennium Tower? That's what it feels like ending this game with Radical Highway. It's hard to describe how the atmosphere felt with this song playing but it's the highlight of the game for me.
I was just expecting the final boss fight when I jumped into the portal, gasped when this started playing and Shadow was grinding down that bridge rail. So iconic
@@aneess there's less than 2 seconds of Amen sampled in this track. It's in the very beginning as it transitions into the main beat with the bass synth. the rest is typical DnB one-shots. It's fucking excellent but it's not really using breaks. in DnB, at least contemporary DnB, you don't hear breaks being used as the main skeleton of a beat. I'm not an expert on this so if anyone wants to correct me, go ahead, but that's a lot more common in Jungle, a sub genre of DnB. If you listen to stuff like Ape Escape or Bomberman 64/Hero you can hear that. Also just so you know, One-Shots are basically samples of just single drum hits and you can put them in a rack and play them like a drum machine. You can slice individual parts of a break (meaning a 3-6 second recording of a drummer playing) and make them sound like one-shots but I don't think that's what they did here. Go check out some Jungle, Breakbeat and DnB. They're really fun genres and especially with Jungle, you'll find some very PS1 sounding music in it.
one thing i really like about this version is the riff is incomplete for the majority of the song - bits of silence or techno placed where guitar would be, before finally completing itself, before disassembling again - there's a lot of other bits alongside that, but i really like the distinct feel of it - i personally interpret it like black doom's will breaching shadow's mind again and again - attempting to rekindle that flame of vengeance once so bright in his first appearance that's just my opinion though, at the end of the day its just a hard asf remix of radical highway
Bad news for you: "Enemy Territory" from sonic forces is a mashup of both Radical Highway and Westopolis. which subtly hints that these two levels are in the same area. and when you think about it, they're aesthetically similar.
@@jinxyjangleit is absolutely a mashup lol, Westopolis is certainly the base of Enemy Territory but it uses the main riff of Radical Highway throughout and the echoing part before the climax of ET is just the beginning section of Radical highway
I was relieved when I saw Radical Highway got a full 2 acts instead of being awkwardly interjected in other levels. The problem with those other parts was that the visuals didn't remind me of Radical Highway at all aside from the red bridge and the patterns on the road.
Part of me wonders why Black Doom is so obsessed with this stage instead of Lethal Highway. They basically turned Radical Highway into Lethal Highway, considering the whole premise of the stage being that the highway is broken up and overrun with the Black Arms. Really, the biggest gameplay difference to how Radical Highway would look in Generations, at least in my mind, would be the music track they chose. And maybe Shadow using a motorbike instead of sliding during those tube sections... Also, if it is Radical Highway, wouldn't Gens 3DS Sonic have seen this?
The best explanation I can come up with is that Radical Highway was where Shadow was at his most hate-filled (had just been released, hadn't met Rouge yet, entirely focused on blowing up the planet); perhaps it was Black Doom's attempt to relapse him into his lowest point? Though by the time Shadow gets here, he's obviously finished his character arc. It won't work on him.
Black Doom’s actually done this thing with stages once before, with The Doom in Shadow’s own game, where he warped the Ark into a strange version of itself to get into Shadow’s head to control him. The deal with Radical Highway is basically him kicking that ability into overdrive, and very nearly succeeding given how angry Shadow got after the third encounter
