Nice to see my man Robby Robinson get some love. His was the body type the incredible Lee Haney used to sculpt his masterpiece. My favorite bodybuilders are Lee Haney, Robby Robinson, Sergio Oliva, Brian Buchanan and Serge Nubret.
I forgot about Buchannan, I was thinking Wheeler or Clairemont all the way but there's no denying Brian Buchannan had the most impressive front D-Bicep pose arguably of all time. I do Like the Flex Wheeler front D-Bicep pose from the Florida Pro back in the 90's, it was his first pro show after his auto accident in which Aaron Baker finished 2nd, he looked phenomenal in that pose.
Sam Davies he had a chemistry degree dude, stop speaking out of our ass. If anything hed probably used very little gear considering how well he is in his 70s, no surgeries no sickness etc
Just getting around to watching these. Your #1 choice is right on! I was astonished the first time I saw Buchanan in MUSCLE AND FITNESS--small waist combined with incredible upper body size made his front double absolutely insane. I'm glad you're going back and doing your research because many of the guys you say you'd never heard of were legends. Also very cool to see Arnold--the guy everyone calls the best ever--worked into the pack. It's easier to see that he, like everyone else, had strengths and weaknesses. Nice work!
I have been bodybuilding for 34 years..and as soon as the_WHO Has the best double bicep pose. BRIAN BUCHANAN name came too mind. You got ot bang on Tom...In my opinion....%100
One omission from this list is Albert Beckles at the 1985 Mr O where he placed 2nd only to the unbeatable Lee Haney. In the starting lineup he hits a front double biceps that is literally incredible Its hard to find footage of this but definitely worth uncovering, it really is that phenomenal, blew me away the first time I saw it, and then years later I bought the 1980/90s era Mr O DVD package on amazon and when I watched the '85 again..............Damn !!!, Beckles looked PHENOMENAL, and that front double biceps pose is legendary
I first saw Brian Buchanan in the 88 Olympia his upper body was immense almost perfect but his slender legs let him down his rear double biceps pose was amazing
In my opinion Víctor Martínez is the best double biceps. To look like a cartoon is really cool but I prefer the solid shape of el puertorriqueño!! Thanks for the video :)
Thank you for giving so much credit to Shawn Ray. There aren't enough video's about him or his physique, simply because people do not like him. Phil has to start saving his imagine or the same will happen to him
There’s this one picture of Arnold not featured in this video and man it’s my favorite front double picture ever. Brian Buchanan still the winner though
Yeah good picks. I've actually got pics of Brian Buchanan, and that exact photo of Edgar Fletcher on the wall of my home gym. It's definitely one of the best bodybuilding pics ever. Eduardo Kawak also had a great front double biceps as did Vince Taylor. Lee Haney's FDB was incredible even though his arms were not the biggest, and Charles Clairmonte is right at the top of my list as well.
14:58 Porter Cottrell....Really popular guy back in the day. Like a cross between Greg Plitt's modeling omnipresence and Evan Centopani's "relatableness".
Good top three. I pick Arnold and good for zoning in on Robby. He was on the cover of the first bodybuilding magazine I ever bought. Muscle Builder in 1978. He just stood out. Did not see Steve Reeves or Mohamed Makkawy unless I missed them. Freddy Ortiz too.
Without even looking at the video my top 3 was Arnie, Robby and Brian Buchanan - in that order! A couple I wouldn't have there, but a pretty complete list. Maybe Bob Paris, and Eddie Moyzan could have been there? And old timers Roy Callender and Casey Viator. Casey's double bi reminded me a lot of Arnies. It was truly incredible!
I like big Louie's front double bicep the most. Huge chest, arms n serratus muscle definition. Mass n fullness with decent definition for that 70s era.
Great list for sure, definitely agree. From the way that BB contests are actually judged though, no doubt a prime Ronnie had the greatest FDB shot of all time.
Agree:) Ronnie’s FDB pose is the GOAT of FDBs, if judged by an Olympia Judging Committee. Arnold’s FDB is, of course, timeless. and Brian Buchanan & Robbie Robinson’s are perhaps more “aesthetic” to look at than Ronnie’s because of how freakishly small their waists were (their bicep peaks were somehow the same exact circumference as their waists!). But, as we know, the Olympia Judging Committee (infamously) removes “aesthetics” from the overall equation when it comes to picking their winner. And nobody, not even Robbie Robinson, could beat Ronnie when it came to overall size, conditioning, and balance, the three criteria that the Olympia Judging Committee actually DOES care about.
Great concept vid and giving some shine to more obscure pro BBers the modern fan may not be familiar with. I don't know how you did it but that 25 minutes breezed by.lol IMO this was Haney's best pose. I'm really a fan of how Mentzer hit this pose too. Of the modern guys, I really like Huh and his arms and vacuum.
haney was never noted for great arms, in fcat thats his one main weakness. And you need great arms to have a great front double biceps pose. honestly i like flex wheelers the best, even though it isnt perfect- chest should be bigger and shoulders wider.
Yeah the main knock on Haney was how average to smallish his arms were, but in some Mr. Os they looked decent. Not up to today's standards, but they weren't a serious liability. IMO you don't necessarily need huge arms to have a symmetrical physique. Haney's arms were just big enough for the 1980s. His muscular detail in his arms almost made up fro their lack of raw size. In his last Mr. O, Haney's arms IMO looked bigger than Dorian's.
not up to todays standards?they were not cmparable with the arms of scott, sergio or arnold and those guys were 10-20 years ahead of him. They were decent arms but hisd torso was huge- very wide shoulders, big ribcage, huge back and chest. You need huge arms to match, esp in a back double biceps pose. His small waist made it somewhat forgivable, unlike yates. they were smaller than dorians, id say.And dorians were never that great anyway.
Thanks man! Yeah it was a rly fun video to make going back in time checking out all these lesser known talents, many which I'd never heard of before! Looking forward to continuing this series because I've never seen anyone else put together a list like this going pose by pose. Stay tuned for more! :)
Good point about Buchanan but I'd still give Sergio the edge over him because his forearms and triceps were better as was his thighs and calves(if you look at the whole pose from the front).
Yeah, made this list before he was a household name I guess you could say. Hadn't heard of him until I got around to the Back Double pose, but he would be on here too his biceps were insane
And Matt Mendenhall (not sure I’ve spelt it correctly) will forever go down as the greatest to never get their pro card. Like it or not it’s easier to get it these days more opportunities in more divisions.
I saw I think Dorian mention Brian in an interview when talking about genetics I think a fair while back. There’s never been a taper like Brian ever totally fucking freaky smaller waist than bikini competitors!
What about my man Tony Pearson, his legs suck yeah, but so do a few people on the list, he also did not make the FLS,A&B,or the BDB. And I heard people say Frank Zane's Vacuum pose is better then his, but Pearson is more versatile with the vacuum, he can hit it in the poses I mentioned, the SC, and the Crucifix Pose for crying out, and for me, Tony has better abs, arms and roundness than Zane. He reminds of Serge Nubret with wider shoulders, and I know you guys might not agree with me on this, but I like his MM pose.
I just re-watched this video for the first time in a while right after watching the 81’ Olympia video and I came to a jarring conclusion. Brian Buchannon was not only over looked but completely disrespected by not at least placing 2nd at the Olympia because if that isn’t s Mr Olympia worthy physique especially in the 1980s. That waist is almost too good to be real and what really made me think this guy should of been crowned Mr O is the sheer fact that guys nowadays take ten times the gear this guy took and don’t have the bicep mass and shape he has. Their excuse nowadays is that to be as big as they are they forgo the small waist from all the food and gear and slin and whatever else. BUT I’m starting to think a lot of that is bullshit because this guys waist barely exists and he has the mass on his arms of a modern pro. I think laziness could be a factor. Overeating and not keeping as clean as they should be year round. I would love to find out what Brian Buchannon’s diet was like as well as his training regimen. It was much harder to turn pro back then so maybe it’s genetics
Good video, good points, even thou for me personaly those sweeps and peaks of those arms and those poping out lats of Robbie Robinson looks the best. Also, don't diss Greg Valentino, he is a great guy, if anything you can educate yourself about him. Just saying.
Vic Richards wouldn't have done shit in open class bodybuilding. He had high lats, a long waist and goofy proportions. His elephant skin would have kept him from any kind of conditioning worthy of even an NPC title. I don't understand why he comes in any hypothetical discussion.
Absolutely 100% agree with your number 1 pick

surprised Thierry Pastel isn't on your list shinning star.
Brian is fucking amazing! He's a mix of Arnold and Sergio.

thanks!
Aleksandar Novakovic yes!! Porter, was one of my favourites back in the day. Solid Symmetry and aesthetic, was kind of the Ronny Rockel of the 90's
