  • We're taking a gap year over 2025, and setting off on a lap of Australia in our 2001 Toyota Hiace Campervan, Franklin.
Despite staying in campsites that we know well, we got quite a surprise on our first night!

I subbed to your channel a while ago to save the vids on how to fix the hiace (as i have one). Pretty cool to see you're actually using yours! Have a good trip!

Hey, thanks for your kind comment! I’ve done a few repairs that didn’t get documented, so feel free to ask about any you might want advice on and if I can help out I certainly will try!

Recently subbed after watching your oil sump pan replacement video, was by far one of the best home vehicle instructional videos out there. I recently started getting some overheating issues in my 04 hiace, 5L 3litre diesel engine, the temp gauge normally never moves above halfway until last week (heat wave down in Tasmania) it was sitting just above halfway so i pulled over and then the temp spiked, coolant flowed out of the overflow sump. again driving today the temp started to creep above halfway so I pulled over. Wondering if you've had any overheating issues in your van or if youve replaced the radiator? First thing i did when buying the van 1 year ago was a radiator flush and a cylinder compression test. Any info is greatly appreciated. Cheers

Hey mate, thanks for the comment & sub. I haven’t had any overheating issues with my van (petrol 2rze motor), although I did change the water pump and thermostat maybe 2-3 years ago as they were original with maybe 300,000 kms on them. Had planned to do a radiator before we left for the lap but the job list kept stacking up and we decided to forgo the radiator replacement. I do have an engine guard with two temp sensors which help monitor temperatures though.
Could be many things causing your issue- I’d be looking at replacing the thermostat and water pump + hoses. Also look into the condition of your viscous hub. Best of luck, hope it’s an easy enough fix and the overheating doesn’t/hasn’t caused any other damage!

@@The_Gap_Lap Yup those were all the parts I'm going to investigate before going ahead with radiator replacement! Super appreciate the response. If you documented the guard temp sensor install I would be really into that.
Out of curiosity, I saw in your comments somewhere you worked at a parts store and you used a GMB waterpump, what kind of radiator did you purchase as a replacement? A genuine toyota one for my van is around $800, how do you work out which GMB parts suit your van? I use Yoshi parts for my van but it only gives me genuine toyota part numbers. TIA

I just went with the copper/brass option we had in stock, no real reason I went with a particular brand other than availability. Have since returned it anyway!
I didn’t record how I installed the engine guard, but I’ll make sure to show where it’s mounted and give a brief explanation in the van tour in episode 2- hope it helps a bit!
As far as finding part numbers, I’ve got (had- now on the road) access to the parts catalogues we use in the store. Just call up whichever parts store you prefer and they should be able to provide a part number 🙂
