In an exclusive interview with Business Today’s Executive Director Rahul Kanwal, Columnist & Analyst Fareed Zakaria delves into crucial global and regional dynamics shaping the future of US-India relations. Zakaria explains why Xi Jinping has chosen to improve relations with India, citing key geopolitical and strategic motivations behind this shift. He further decodes what India and the world can expect from Trump 2.0, including a continued focus on reducing dependence on China and strengthening ties with India. Highlighting the consistency in US policy towards India over the last 25 years, Zakaria expresses optimism about a "golden opportunity" for India to end China’s dominance in manufacturing under Trump’s leadership, given his admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The conversation also touches on the broader context of tensions in West Asia and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, offering a comprehensive look at global political shifts and their impact on India. Farid Zakaria: If you were to live in India you will realise that labour isn’t cheap at all. Everyone thinks they are cat’s whiskers, low end jobs aren’t for them. They want Govt jobs so that life is sorted out without working. Moreover, even if you get labour they are expensive and inefficient, or will deliver much less than paid for that too with poor quality, and it’s all being made worse by free grains, payments into accounts. Govt is squeezing limited number of tax payers so much that they have very little left beyond meeting two ends, to save or spend on consumer goods. No doubt the economy is slowing down. We aren’t getting to be a manufacturing hub, at best 3k USD per capita is India’s lot. Sad!

Hahaha , we will cross 3k in per capita income by 2030 latest. It's a no brainer ..save this comment. The power of compounding will literally propel us for the next 4 decades. 3k is just a milestone

Pessimism understood and justified but GDP crosses $3k in a year or max 18 months. Inspite of everything. Tailwinds are really good too. Population is stabilizing. People not wanting to do hard manual work will actually help mechanization and improve productivity. Time to actually start charting path to $10Tn economy by 2035, as 5Tn is a given by 2026 end

India is failing on the 3 main characters of a developed nation.
Rupee losing 30% of its value between 2015-19, per-cap slowing down vs neighbours like even Bangladesh, Income-inequality at worst.
Can these fools get at least 1 thing good.

So Zakaria as a news caster is an economics expert, foreign expert, election strategies. Too much importance for a media person. His views about manufacturing are totally naive. Now is also a China-India expert! Just give him all the nobel prizes.

@ sure I dis is poor, but what says is that it is so because it is not a tool of the west.
India was pulled down because it let foreigners come in and take over. It is India’S own fault
Nobody else s and it must reassert itself .In my profession a tennis teacher there are no opportunities in India . I hold a Ph D in philosophy and have developed top tennis players in Ohio but I have had very few Indian students, they are still consumed by worshipping the west. Like you their metric is skewed
India had no chess players 30 years and now they rule the world. The worst sports nation in the world They are supposed to. E good in cricket and they lose to Newzealand with a population of 5 million. The reason is simple namely the slave mindset is too deep .
My students are all exclusively white because Indians don’t trust Indians despite my steller record of developing the top talent in the Midwest .i am fine with my clientelle but it is sad that tennis players in India were more concerned with their English then their forehands or fitness

India has one of the cheapest labor one can get.
The cost of domestic assistance in India ranges from 3,000 to 4,000 Indian Rupees.
The cost is as low as it can be. It takes 4x to 6x as much work for Indians to earn the same amount as Americans do.
