Don Rosa said in an interview the first time he heard this song he wept.

Don was a bit bemused when some long haired guy walks up at a signing (Ducks in general and the Disney Ducks in particular are VERY popular in Finland) and tells him he is going to write songs about his Scrooge comics.
Later he got a message that Tuomas was done, and was heading to London to record, and Don got the preliminary tracks, and was worried, then played them, Said by the second song, he was in tears at the beauty of the thing.
The Johannas (The other girl singing is also a Johanna) have done other works together, and there is a live version of this from one of their concerts. Altamullan Road is the name of their project. The guitarist was the other Johanna's husband Mikko, and both are good friends with Tuomas and Johanna. They all do great music.

I think you've reached a milestone here: music that makes you think about deep issues, like what's important in life. Starting from a comic, as a pretext. Michelangelo (I think) said, contemplating a block of stone, that the statue is already there, waiting to be revealed. He took a block of stone that no one wanted, and sculpted the statue of David. I think there is a similarity in thinking and feeling here. The mark of genius.
I'm a relatively new fan of Nightwish and I've been through a few difficult years, so I've only bought 2 albums so far: their latest album (H :||: N) and this one.

Your observation is brilliant, Gabriel. Tuomas hears things that are not there, and creates them so we can hear them too. Auri is an extension of this project, and has the same genius, gently shaped with assistance from the brilliance of Troy and Johanna. There is the soul of a child that still bounces around in Tuomas, and through the serious demeanor he exposes to the world, he grins as he reaches into your chest and massages your heart with his music. What a blessing we have been given to live in the time of Tuomas Holopainen. I liken it to living in the time of Bach, both composers so far ahead of their contemporaries that not everybody can see the colors that they painted with the pallets given to them. Only they can mix the paints to create colors others cannot perceive. Thank you.

Hi Gabriel, have you seen the movie made by Nightwish? If not I cannot recommend it strongly enough. It's entitled 'Imaginarium' , not to be confused with the later movie 'of doctor Parnassus '. It was made along side their album of the same name. I won't say any more because I refuse to spoiler, but I love the movie and I think you will too.

@@duncansmith5854 Yes, I've seen the movie about 3 times I think, in streams of Reacticide discord, and even of some reactors. Nightwish music is presented relatively in the background there, most important being the videographic elements. The moment of the dancer from the glass globe remained imprinted in the memory ...

Tuomas's beautiful ode to the days of childhood and childhood lost can be thoroughly enjoyed in Nightwish's "Meadows of Heaven" with Annette on vocals. Best video is one with onscreen lyrics and a beautiful pictorial collage a guy put together that adds to the mood and emotions of the song. Usually the top choice on YT if you look up the song. About the only tune with Annette that I enjoy, it is worth the time. Great Emppu section as well.

The lyrics and music of Tuomas Holopainen is very special and emotions very easily surface. It brings magic to my life.. He really is a genius. Regarding Scrooge, a dear friend once told me the coins represented memories. It was a significant insight that really made me think deeply about a flawed character like him. ´To be rich is to still remember, To treasure your first dime, To have a chance to say farewell`... I see hope and beauty in this story.

Yes, this is an amazing song and an amazing album. The album is a soundtrack to the book Life and times of Scrooge McDuck. Tuomas is a huge Donald Duck and Don Rosa fan and he had been dreaming to create this album for many years.
It is kind of crazy how much effort Tuomas put to this kind of uncommercial "hobby project". He hired the same orchestra they use in Nightwish albums, that costs tens of thousands of dollars, out of his own pocket. Just to make it perfect.
Johanna is a very unique singer. She is very famous singer in Finland with many radio hits, even though she is not really doing normal mainstream pop. You just got to love her fairy voice.

The key to Tuomas' genius isnt Him telling the story through his eye. It is music telling the story THROUGH Tuomas...he has said in interviews he does his best to have the music tell him how it wants to be told. He created Disc 2 of Human Nature by watching Earth documentaries wothout sound while at his keyboard and just wrote.

    • @WardDorrity
      @WardDorrity Рік тому

Disc 2 of Human :||: Nature is one of the most ravishingly beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. Nothing compares to it. In that regard, I often thought that Mozart was listening to something only he could hear, and that his genius lay in his ability to translate that exquisite perfection into music. So it is with Tuomas, I think.

This link goes to a video from the Signing Session with Don Rosa and Tuomas Holopainen on the day the CD was released (2 min 16 sec). ua-cam.com/video/DC-yy3c6J3o/v-deo.html
The second female vocalist in this song is Johanna Iivanainen, and the (epic?) guitar solo is played by Mikko Iivanainen. Johanna and Mikko has the same last name - Yes, they are a married couple. Pip Williams is the man who did the orchestral arrangements, he has done a lot of music together with Tuomas over the years, almost all the orchestral tracks in Nightwish's music is his work.

I think the Northern Light / Aurora says it all. Whenever I experience these colored light waves in the sky - it fills me with silent music 🎶 that blows my mind..
    - and that genius Tuomas are able to transfer this into music - he showed the waves in sound and colors - and then he adds the lyrics ( I know he works the other way around, starting with the lyrics).
He is unique - just like the people around him, that works with him.
And Tuomas's ability to hear the different singers in his head - including how he imagines they can perform!!!
    He is unique

Eric, that blew me away too. Such a beautiful composition. Don Rosa's joyful face throughout... the joy of creation. Johanna has such a wispy (in the best interpretation of this) and delicate voice that it takes you into the Celtic highlands. As a man, this performance makes me feel how I feel with my lovely wife of 40 years... a desire to defend and protect, even when it may not be possible for me to do so. And the orchestral backing (along with the haunting guitar) amplifies that wonderful voice and lyrics. I loved the emotion in your reaction and I agree about the lifetime of adventure including my military life and post-military life. The triggers are there... treasure every day and every memory you are able to create. At some point, memories may be the only treasures you still have. For some strange reason, it made me think of Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, although from a much younger perception. Lovely. Thank you.

Weekly released Donald Duck comics have a long tradition in Scandinavia. At my parents house there are hundreds of comics from when I was a kid. Each comic has short stories about the characters in the Donald Duck universe. And from time to time a bonus comic came with the weekly comic. The bonus comics had one longer story. The story of which this song is based off of, came divided into three of these bonus comics if I recall correctly. And it was one of my absolute favourites. If you ask people who grew up reading these comics a lot will have their favourite person to draw the drawings, writing the story etc, and they have their favourite stories. The comics were a big motivator for me to learn how to read, and they 100% shaped my interest of history.

Hello, Eric. So I have come back to this reaction, again and again, because your words resonate so thoroughly within me. First of all, I find this composition so magical in music, lyrics, voice, and instrumentation. But there is this deeper, underlying meaning, that tugs at our heartstrings. And it is the magic that Tuomas Holopainen weaves. And Johanna's voice is perfect for this song. I loved the guitar at the end. You mentioned Panama and the swamps of Florida. Been there, done that, and feel with you brother. In this life, every day with the ones you love is so precious and so fleeting. It rips your heart out to think about it. And Tuomas Holopainen does more than make us think about it. He makes us FEEL it. I love your reactions and the way you bare your soul. Thank you for this.

this was certainly one of the best tracks of that album, but it is really worth it to listen to the album entire. all the songs have that haunting beauty, that depth. They draw you into his world, where even joy - and this song conveys a lot of joy - is still permeated with sadness and loss. Which in a way is what the book was about. Trust Tuomas to perfectly transpose that from one form of art to another... He truly belongs in the gallery of the great.

Love your literary reference to The Outsiders as well. Cheers!

Yes sir Eric I to went to another place while listening to this song prior to this video. As I listened along I had my vision of Enya. Dunno if anyone else heard that in Johanna…. but I completely agree she has phenomenal voice and absolutely fits this song perfectly. Glad you did this reaction because I wouldn’t have been touched by a brilliant song by Tuomas 👍🤟

Johanna is a fantastic singer,i wish to do some lives one day as Auri.
I am happy for Tuomas and Johanna also, they are a beautiful couple, great respect to both.
Johanna has an angelic voice, very rare and very unique as should say,she is phenomenon singer, Troy is a big fan of hers and now as Auri they work together.
This song is a masterpiece and the video of course, when it came out,i couldn't stop to listening for days,i was and still i am a big fan of his solo album.
Great reaction of the song, thank you,i am new in your channel, please if you like Johanna's vocals, please do a reaction to Night 13 video song of the first Auri album, it's a masterpiece of all.

Hi Eric, thanks again. Watching you react to this made me cry, and I'm not really sure why - but that's probably why Tuomas is an empathic genius and I'm not! BTW, with Europeans you'll be right far more often than not if you pronounce J as Y (as in "Yes"). The IPA symbol for the Y sound is "j" because it's what most languages use.

I hear some bits and pieces also in their song "Our Decades Under The Sun". By what I understand when they recorded that song every band member at some point did cry. It's a sad but beautiful piece of music... It has this special positive melancholic feeling Tuomas often conveys in his songs. I can't imagine anyone else but floor singing that song.
    ua-cam.com/video/EoV4seyWs8k/v-deo.html
Also Procession from their Human II Nature Album is one of those songs... Again... Couldn't imagine anybody else but floor singing it.
I believe you did react to that song already, but not 100% sure 😊
You might want to check out Auri. It's Tuomas's "second band". His wife is singing in Auri and Troy is also very present in their songs. They don't play live, by what I understood.

I love that song! In my point of view this song shows the genius of Tuomas even better then the Nightwish songs. If you are able to write masterpeaces in your genre is great it self but he is able to write something comepletly different and made it masterfull. I wonder what is going on in his head because me being not creative anyhow, it's facinating how people like Tuomas do that. I don't know. Your analasys is always great and I thank you for that deep and likebel video!

It takes you on an adventure, tells a story. I think you'd also appreciate Auri, a musical project by Tuomas, Johanna and Troy. Some of my favourite songs from them are 'Night 13', 'Kiss The Mountain', 'The Space Between' and 'Desert Storm'.

Great reaction Eric to beautiful song. Not sure if these following bands have been requested before. I've quickly searched and not found them mentioned. First band is Ad Infinitum with the song Afterlife. Lead singer Melissa Bonny has a beautiful voice and occasionally brutal growls. She also has a side project called The Dark Side Of The Moon. They do metal cover songs from film,TV and video games. They have done two songs so far. One from Game Of Thrones called Jenny Of Oldstones and one from LOTR called May It Be. Another is Eleine with their song Enemies and finally Beyond The Black with Reincarnation. Keep up the great work and stay safe 🤘✌️

Wow indeed Mr Clark. Please listen to the whole album, it is really magical. It took me a while to understand why I love all his music so much. Why I always feel so happy listening. Toumas is so genuine, he has so much integrity. It seems he never composes to 'show off' or write 'a hitsong' . In every piece of music it seems his heart is on his sleeve. And we are invited to share this beauty with him. Can there be anything more joyfull or wonderfull? All this brings people together (nightwish army!) to share this joy. But it also brings joy to the people that never fitted in, always on the outside. We look at reactors, we don't know, and will never meet. But still can share the joy with us. Thank you for putting yet another smile on my face today.

@The Wyld Side with Eric Clark: Hey bud! First, just be careful your allergies don't turn into a summer cold. I just got over my own summer cold last week.
As for The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, on the video for The Last Sled, I remember reading that Scrooge was born in 1877 in Scotland. His nephew, Donald, fought in World War II, as a US Navy Sailor (hence Donald wearing a dress blues Navy top). Scrooge lived to the age of 90, passing away with his family around him in 1967. His headstone reads, simply, "Fortuna Faveat Fortibus," or, "Fortune Favors The Strong." And you're absolutely right: Scrooge's story is one that, for a cartoon character, is very interesting.

When this album came out I remember I talked about it next day in school with a friend in music class. He let me borrow the 2 books with all the stories of Life and Times of Scrooge Mcduck. I read all 400+ pages of comics in a few days while listening to this album and it was an amazing experience. Made me learn a lot about the character when previously i thought that he was just some grumpy old man just wanting to be rich. The songs on the album really fit well with all the main stories and gave reading a different feel.

Hey Eric, as much as you appreciate and acknowledge the talent of Tuomas, i can't believe that all you've heard is what you've reacted to. Course i understand you are a busy man, and with kids makes it all the much harder. But you owe it to yourself the especially give the whole NW catalog a go. As ive said before, all 3 singers are good. I find myself changing my mind all the time as to which one is my favorite . The 2 records with Tarja Century Child & Once are just really really good. The scrooge record, the whole album is a ( creeper ). Cracked me up when you said that. You work hard, you deserve it, listen to it all. You know what NW is really good for? The car, perfect for road trips!
