  • I backpacked the Hoh River Trail to Blue Glacier, which is on Mount Olympus, from August 7-9, 2020. This hike occurs in Olympic National Park and includes river, creek, meadow, mountain, glacier, alpine, and rain forest views.

@@charlieshikes was a great hike, but a bit early so much more snow, but made it to the glacier.

@@BackcountryRenegade congrats on making it to the glacier and completing the hike. I can imagine that it would be a little snowy up there this time of year.

Enjoyed the video. I was wondering once you get past Glacier Meadows is it fairly clear how to navigate around the glacier area? I noticed the sign you showed that says terminal vs lateral glacier. Just wondering how clear the trails are there or if you'd recommend special maps or navigation skills. Although, I'm guessing it's all dependent on the amount of snow on the ground at the time of your visit. Thanks for sharing your hike!

Thanks, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. I agree with your comment on the snow. I did not find the trail difficult to follow without snow, but it does become more of a talus field the higher you climb towards the top of the ridge where you can see the glacier. It might be harder to follow under certain conditions. I recommend bringing a map and/or GPS capability to assist your navigation throughout the hike, but I didn't find that anything special was required for this hike. I did not visit the terminal moraine so I can't speak to that branch of the trail.

My 1st time was in 66 as a 14 yr old Boy Scout hiked from Staircase to Lake Quinalt and were the first since the Columbus Day Storm. I did the Hoh to Blue in the 70s when no ladder needed. I'm 69 and want to do it one more time. I also want to do the Shipwreck Coast Trail again .

I love Olympic NP. The Hoh Rainforest area was closed from flooding and/or road work so I wasn’t able to go to that area when I was visiting Washington state. But I got to hike around Lake Crescent and Lake Quinault and spent a nice misty afternoon exploring Ruby Beach. Definitely a place I will get back to someday! Thanks for sharing this amazing area!
