N SCALE COFFEE TABLE LAYOUT WITH CUSTOM POWERPACK
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- This is my n scale coffee table layout with the new powerpack I built to fit in the drawer. Entire unit including the table was built myself, Debbie and some dubious help from Max. Layout runs two trains with an additional train on the passing siding.
@maykevin5 Hi, The layout insert is 26x 48 and the top glass is 25 3/8 x48. Side glass is 26x 11 and 48 1/2 x11. You may want to adjust your sizes to make the glass come out to all even dimentions, no fractions as sometimes the glass cutters are funny. Check to see if going over 48 inches is a problem with the glass guys. I'd suggest getting the glass first and building the table to accomondate the size of the glass.
hi! did you buy or built the coffee table? i spent several hours searching for similar display tables with no luck :(.
very nice N layout!
The trains, plastic buildings and track were purchased from someone getting out of the hobby. By selling off items I didn't need net cost waszero or I made a little. The cherry wood was leftovers from a roll top desk I made, hard for me to price but not much. Retail cherry is probably $300.The 1/4 glass was about $150 or so. All the scenery was home made so no cost. The real cost was time but as you say it's all a hobby. A commercial built unit is easily over $2000 Thanks for your comments.
@NSWNS110109 it's hard to film and run at the same time. I wasn't going for prototypical operation, just to display the layout. I do have some other engines that when double headed will make the grade in a much slower pace! Cost is hard to asses as I buy rough sawn cherry in large quantity -200-300 board feet- and the n equipment I bought from a guy who wanted out of the hobby and by selling off some stuff, the rolling stock and such was free. I built the power pack for about 40 in components.
i bet you will never get thoses houses done hey ,what did they go on strike or is ur economy that bad on your layout also ??...I dont see many trees tocut down for the rest of the work ...P.s very nice coffee table
The glass top and frame lift right off. Also the secton with the houses and new construction lifts off if anything happens in the tunnel Quite frankly, the layout runs well and rarely derails.
Nice Work on the layout. I am in the process of making a layout now and actually doing a video series on how to make a layout from start to finish. I just uploaded my first video yesterday. I would love to try this after I am done with my current one, but I dont think I have the skills to build the table. Nice work and check out my video if you get a chance....
@gtc1961 Thanks for the nice comments. Yes the top and sides are glass I had custom cut. I'm not sure I would use acrylic. -TM
Thanks for the comments. The table is 30 x 52 x 21 high-TM
Thanks for the comments. The switchers, a calf and cow both, powered pull as well as you would expect for an old technology train. Due to the nature of the layout, the grade is fairly steep and it needs a double headed engine to pull more than three cars up the grade. For inexpensive engines, I have found the life like engines to work very well. -TM
Nice selection of rolling stock and Engines keep it fresh.
@Fis10n Top lifts right off easily. I just can't see anymore to re-rail the cars!-TM
l have a 2X4ish coffee table l'm going to make be making a layout like this one. Did you do this one from plans or did you come up with the track layout on your own? I like how this is set up and I'd appreciate any help you could give as to the track layout.
Found the track, "Mississipi Winter" Michael Chapman. Great song.
I like you have O scale, But, also have had N Scale, & HO Scale, Still can't make up my mind what Scale I really like. Keep up the Great work!
Sweet layout. Looking at a project similar to this myself. Out of curiosity, what is the name of the tune and performing featured on this song. Really enjoyed listening, and watching. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards.
It is wonderful. It is my next project. also I have N scale.
congratulations.
@lowrider1812 Thanks for taking the time for the nice comments!
Other than the train in the centre loop going way too fast, this is totally awesome :)
Very well done, great craftsmanship there. I assume the top and sides are glass, not acrylic?
@nacho210210 thanks for the nice comments, Nacho-TM
@LEARNTOPLAYCRAPSThanks for the nice comments-TM
Thanks for the comments. The table is 30 x 52 x 21 high. The glass is 1/4 inch thick. The top lifts off to access the inside and the layout is built on a platform can be lifted out of the coffee table intact if need be. The glass is also easily removed if need be. As a guess it probably weighs 100 lbs or so with the glass.-TM
i could spend all day with that layout. the jazz band were excellent too! liked the drummer. thanks
Thanks for your nice comments-TM
@RedLego391 Thanks for the nice comments-TM
This is the track 'Memphis In Winter' by Michael Chapman.
did you get it from trains n tables?
@aginnan I built this on the fly. The table is 30 x 52 x 21 high. I just started laying track in the available space. I have no real track plan. There is one outer loop with passing siding and the inner loop is a lazy figure eight. Note that the grade of the raised portion is on the edge of being too steep due to the space requirements and I use a dual powered engine to pull. Many single units will not climb the grade.- Hope this info helps-TM
@trackspike64 Thanks for the nice comments. The builders union went out on strike before the neighborhood was finished. The coffee tabe has been a nice addition to the living room and was a good use for some cherry I had left over from other projects that unlike the house builders, I managed to finish.-TM
Sweet. Thanks for sharing!!!
@pureepic441 It's N scale.-TM
@kalebsthebest67 Thanks for the great comment. This was a result of falling into some n scale trains for next to nothing and needing a new coffee table. This is my first and only n scale layout. I'm primarily an O gage operator/collector. We had a lot of fun doing this.-TM
eggscllent . i also like the kitten kat . :)
Well, I'm not sure how to answer. I guess it depends on your skill level. It's not a beginners project but an advanced woodworker could surely come up with something . Again the layout is not exactly a beginners effort.-TM
@mapexmac Thanks, This table was built spur of the moment when I fell into some N trains for too good a price to pass up. I sold off some, enough to cover the cost of the project and keep what you see. I needed a new coffe table anyway and had the cherry wood on hand. This was a good way to involve the girlfriend who did 50% of the scenery herself. -TN
Hi, thanks for your comments. The entire layout including the coffee table was built by me. I am always surprised by how many great comments I get on it! There are some coffee table layouts available, at least there used to be, but they don't seem to be as nice or detailed as this one. They were also very pricey. Check out Bakatronics on the web.-TM
can you open the top if something happens?
Excellent job on both the layout and the coffee table! This is the best coffee table for N scale trains I've ever seen! Greetings from Athens/Greece.
Thank you for the compliment. That's high praise indeed from across the globe! -TM
THANKS! That's quite a compliment. It did come out good and has been a lot of fun both to build and run. It all started with a chance acquisition of some N equipment one day. This was my first and only N layout although I have had HO in the past and currently am involved in O. Glad you enjoyed the video.-TM
Thanks for the comments. I sent a response in a message to you as space is limited in the reply here. -TM
@axelsfolks Thanks for taking the time to comment. This was a good project for some left over wood. -TM
Building the cherry coffee table took about 1 month total and the layout took about 2 mos or less. It was a fun project-TM
Michael Chapman " Memphis in winter"
best coffee table ever
Its called Memphis in winter by Michale Chapman. Thanks for the nice comments-TM
Thanks for the comment. I don't remember what the music is , it was a canned piece from utube.-TM
No, the entire layout including the cherry coffee table and powerpack was built by me in my home shop.-TM
My other layout is O gauge with pre and postwar trains, no specific rail line-TM
Love this. I was thinking 24" x 48" on a work table, something I can run various trains on, because the hardware is the thing for me, which is why I'm accumulating engines and cars. Thanks for the inspiration...
Thanks for the nice coments-TM
NICE.....and no worries about cleaning the track.
very nice job!! 5 out of five.
Awesome layout. I've been looking for a pair of those Atlas switchers, do they pull good?
Thanks for the nice comment, We have a lot of fun with this layout-TM
Excellent job.
Very cool!!!
By the buy, when the kids were small, we had a small set up on the living room floor, and our cat used to savage the engines and cars: whack-whack, the repeat until the train was fully derailed.
Cats are the best!
how hard was that to make
Really nice work there - I really appreciate the inventiveness of the drawers too - a very clever solution, making the entire work a very tidy operation. Entertaining, practical, concise. Brilliant!
@jbrunsonjr Thanks for taking the time to comment-TM
how long did it take you?
Very cool layout. been looking to get into n scale you just gave me a great idea to start. what's the overall size weight with all that glass? once again great job.
The top lifts off easily for changing trains or any mishaps-TM
Very well done to you TM :) A question only. What is the dimensions of the coffee table?
Grateful for answers.
Thanks for your nice comments on the layout-TM
ok
Thanks . Most of the track is Atlas. We enjoy this layout-TM
@Staratino Thanks for the nice comments!-TM
So awesome. I'm into g scale. Have the garden layout but this would be awesome for my crash pad
@xam107 Thanks for your comments. Yes the top lifts right off and the side glass is also easily removed if need be.-TM
I SEE YOU HAVE TWO RUNNIN SLOW THE OTHER ONE DOWN JUST A TICK OTHERWISE NOT Bad.
Beautiful layout! What's the name of the music track on the back ground?
OMG this is my goal in life is to make one
It's my only N scale layout-TM
looks like z
Nicely done, lots of fun!
very cool
okay cool
thank you!
Thanks for your comments-TM
Thanks foer the nice comment-TM
Nice! You should put it on display in a train show! 15/5
Thanks for the comment.-TM
Thanks for your comment-TM
the train on top is pretty darn fast, and cat proof
I love your work! Great idea for those of us with limited space.
Thanks for the nice comments!
Very impressive work!
Fantastic layout! Did you use Atlas track?
tmackinator, do you know where i could get a table like that?
No sorry, I built the table. There is at least one company that does coffee table layouts. Search the web for "coffee table layout" . The tables he made were not as nice but were of good quality. He may do custom work but be sure to sit down when he hits you with a price!
Yeah I've already been to that guy's website and I'm not paying that much for a train table layout, besides i just want the coffee table, not the whole layout. I already have a track plan.
Thank You-TM
I'm new to the hobby and this is so inspiring! What brand and type tracks did you use?
It is common atlas track.
tmackinator thanks so much! do you know about what your tightest radius is?
Very nice! Who needs coffee table books anyhow!
Thanks for your nice comments-TM
whats the music????? woooooooo killing bro!!! who's that??
Sherman Oaks Shuffle
Gary Herbig
Very nice!
Yes.-TM
Wow. That's brilliant!
This layout is epic :)
Im sorry to bother but im building a coffee table layout its 251/2 wide & 451/2 long. I like this and how you did it .I want to put a figure 8 in the middle and have an outside track running . Can you tell me how you done it ?
+Arthur Lee What specific information are you looking for?
+tmackinator Possibly track plan? Im using Kato untrack
+Arthur Lee I didn't use a specific track plan.I just laid the track on the fly. The only concession I had to make is I had to use some very tight radius curve sections (81/2") inside the tunnel for the lazy 8 over and under loop. This limits the type of engines that will run on the inner loop. Also the grade of the inner loop is steeper than recommended due to space limitations but I just run short trains or use a double headed engine set up. The Whole inside of the layout can easily be lifted out if necessary.-TM
+tmackinator Ok.Thanks very much. I didnt really think there was a track plan . I like what you have done and id like to try something like that in my coffee table. It will take some time but ill get it done. Thanks for your time and great job.
+Arthur Lee I'd like to see progress photos as you go!
Max the cat and the Jazz tune are COOL MAN!!!
Thanks so much for commenting!
Pretty neat!
