I remember being about 19 and reading the Hunger Games books. They were really great, and then I brought it up to a coworker at a freelance job and she said, "So team Peeta or team Gale?" I was like, "What??" Turned out most everyone reading the books were enjoying the story for a perceived love triangle, which is exactly what Panem was into. Not crapping on anyone who enjoyed the relationships in that series, but from my perspective it was like 5% of Katniss' actual wants. Whatever conflicting feelings she had about them (mostly Peeta), it seemed like she was just trying to not die and win the day. There's a romantic element as part of the subplot, sure, but I just never understood how people took it as an actual romance.

@@wherefancytakesme Right?? To my understanding, Katniss never had romantic feelings for _either_ of them, and really only started loving Peeta that way when they talked more, and went through hardships together, and were there for each other. Y'know, when they actually started building a relationship? I don't think she ever had romantic feelings for Gale; her kisses and connections with him were to make him feel better, like it was initially with Peeta (although that was additionally for show). Obviously Peeta and Gale both liked and loved Katniss, but for it to be a love triangle (or more so a love corner) the feeling needs to be mutual, hence the line drawn between two characters in that diagram.
(If people like Gale x Katniss that's chill, but I don't see how that was a love triangle)

But I'd be so pissed if I was Charlie like his behavior made sense up until Bella showed up with a broken hand because she tried to punch Jacob off her and then Charlie congratulated Jacob...

Well as someone who has childhood somewhat samd as Bella I can tell that I was even afraid of having friends. Cause you always fear if you get friends or bf/gf like your parents. And then self defence kicks in and even if we have friends after some time you started to go away from them into your misery again. And that's because mind is so messed up from childhood and this problem can't be solved just in days or months. People like us took so much time to heal from that years of trauma. And I was only lucky that I was undesirable and had trust issues which kept me away from red flags when I was a teenager but most of teenage girls such as Bella are not lucky. And they find another damaged people like them just so they would be understood. I mean I literally had two friends who had problem with their father just as me. And only found peace with them until I got how we are just not compatible with each other accept common mommy & daddy issues. So we are not that close friends anymore.

@Jabroniville The abusers don't feel bad, the abuse victims just think they do because their desire for the abusers "love" and fear from the violence is the one thing that binds them to the relationship. "He didn't mean to..." and "It was my fault/I shouldn't have..." Is one of the most common phases uttered by victims of abuse, even to professionals. Icing on the cake? Domestic abuse laws are still archaic. Unless the victim agrees to press charges or the assault happens Infront of witnesses, no one can do a damn thing about it. You could literally listen to your neighbor beat the shit out of their significant other, report it, even record evidence and unless the victim decides press charges,.you get to hear it all over again and potentially worse considering the abuser would blame the victim for the cops being called.

    • @MarcyStevonshy

@@RiveroftheWither Some abusers could just be saying that phrase to their victim in the emergency room because they want the victim to think they regret it and come crawling back into their arms. I also wouldn't put it past an abuser to say shit like this in public so people think they're NOT abusive and think they genuinely care about the victim and just "acted out in a fit of anger this one time."
But some abusers DO feel bad about the pain they cause, just in a sick twisted way like "How could you make me hurt you? Hurting you makes me feel like the bad guy! This hurts me more than it hurts you" kinda way. So they can still say they felt bad and mean it, they just don't feel bad about the correct things.

Exactly! So, so, SO many romantic plots hinge on the sole fact that people aren't having a simple conversation they should be having. It's not just that that conversation would make the movie better, it would completely negate the need for the entire movie to even exist. And it's so sad, because movies are what we grow up with and what we learn from, so no one is learning healthy coping mechanisms or healthy conversational skills from them and we often have to learn those from a therapist. It should be common sense and basic knowledge. It would ruin the entire film industry, perhaps, but still.
I have severe difficulty finding movies that I like because I just get frustrated if the obstacles are all caused by two people not talking. I can't feel tension in an action scene that hinges on someone taking an inordinately large amount of time to say something that could've been said in a sentence. Like "don't go that way! You have to trust me!", which should have been "there's a bomb there!", done.

In the time I taught, I had a pretty even split of classes opt to ban vs discuss the book. The only class I didn’t give the option was my teen summer camp kids (Center for Talented Youth/Hopkins). They got a ban on the book in class AND the lecture - but that mostly reflected the fact they were teens and our classes were 8-12 hour days, and I didn’t want the book around during lunch or breaks. And I did want to teach them it wasn’t a good thing to idolize. Got a lot of parents thanking me for that one.

@@khills I personally don't like the idea of banning books but I like that you give them a choice on whether to ban the book or to have it be a part of the lesson plans.
Honestly, I like the option to turn it into a lesson/lecture. It's a great way to teach kids to be critical of what they read and to address more serious topics in a way that makes it understandable/relatable.
I didn't read the Twilight books until I was a young adult (I was 22 when I read all 4 books for the first time... my friends had already read the books and insisted I read at least the first book before I watch the movie. I managed to read the first 3 books before the first movie premiered... I didn't have the money to buy the last book until after I had seen the first movie in theatres). Personally, as an adult, I loved the books. It took me 3 days to finish the first one, 2 days to finish the 2nd book, 12 hours to finish the 3rd book, and only 9 hours to finish the 4th book. But as an adult, I was able to enjoy the story while recognizing that in reality, taking away the supernatural elements (if the characters were all humans), that the relationship between Bella and Edward is definately co-dependent, toxic, and not "Hashtag Relationship Goals".
As an adult I am able to appreciate the fantasy and keep it separate from reality. The reality being that you should never be that dependent on another person where they become your entire world, forsaking friends and family in the name of "love." There is a difference between love and obsession/infatuation. Bella's actions when Edward and his family leave are dangerous and self-destructive. She puts herself in dangerous situations in hopes to hear/see Edward in her mind... Which taken out of fantasy, in reality that could be the thrill seeking, high risk situations that Bella does or it could be self-harm, which is just as dangerous and high risk behavior as what Bella does in the books/movies. And Edward's behavior is controlling and manipulative. He does some really fucked up things, treating Bella like trash and justifies it by saying he was trying to "protect her." And nobody should be breaking into your bedroom (or even peeping at the window) to watch you sleep at night... that's not romantic... that's creepy, stalkery, and criminal behavior.
However, for young kids (pre-teens/teenagers included in that) who don't have the life experience that adults do, who still have young brains that are still learning and developing, it can be difficult to separate reality from fiction and it's easier for kids to idolize and imitate that which they watch and read in media. I think it's a good thing to teach children how to be critical of the things they read, both fiction and non-fiction alike (because it's important to be critical of news sources and to recognize biases in the media when analyzing information).
I also think it's an important lesson to teach children (pre-teens/teens) the difference between fantasy and reality. They need to be taught that what is acceptable in a fantasy world is not always acceptable in reality. How else will children (pre-teens/teens) learn what the "red flags" are if nobody takes the time to point them out? And what better way to do so than to look at fictional characters' choices/behaviors and discuss why those choices/behaviors were good or bad? I think those sorts of discussions done in the "safe space" of a classroom are critical to a child's (pre-teen/teen) learning and development so that they can take what they learn in the classroom and hopefully apply it to their real lives and future relationships so that they can recognize the red flags in real relationships early before they get in too deep and are able to walk away from a bad relationship.

    • @khills
      @khills 2 роки тому +32

@@captsparrowslady Yeah, like I said, the only class I didn't give the choice was my teen group of smartiepants. They got the lecture on /why/ I was banning the books, and I allowed the girl who asked to make it her final project to do so, but I absolutely was not going to have them in my classroom for 8-12hrs a day, 6 days a week. For one, those classes have to move at a fast pace because they're actually academic courses and you only have the kids for six (very intense) weeks, so I didn't want the distraction. But also because of the intensity of the space-summer camp, away from home, long hours in the classroom-I could see a situation where the intensity actually amped up the attachment to the teen romance of it all (teens and forbidden love/Romeo and Juliet, what even is that), and I didn't want to end up with that situation in my lap.
We all have those cultural things that mean a lot to use because they happened at a time of high emotion (one of mine, funnily enough, is Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and I was okay with minimizing the chance the kids would form that attachment to the Twilight series.

That's the only kind of relationships and life she had had for years. I mean even moving in with her dad was all for her mom. Which is probably largely why she has no real sense of self. She never had or took that time to figure out who she was on her own without a heavily dependent relationship. She was starting to foster connections and figure out who she was, while living with Charlie. She was starting to learn more about Charlie and some friends at school, but then Edward just barreled into her life. And she stopped nurturing those connections, she actually mostly cut herself off from them because everything became about Edward.

A great alternative storyline to the Twilight saga of abusive and toxic relationships: Bella's abusive bf Edward has to leave Forks. After leaning on her friends for support, Bella discovers she loves motorcycles and working on them with her unproblematic friend Jacob, a guy who doesn't try to control her and would never get upset at being "friendzoned". She becomes a whiz at fixing machines and gets a job at an autoshop. Bella begins to forget about Edward and enjoys spending time with Jacob and riding motorcyles and fixing them together (rather than just watching him do it.) She decides to date Jacob because she realizes emotionally stable guys her age with nice abs are much more fun to date than old, sullen vampires. She also makes time for her friends and realizes that doing normal high school activities with Anna Kendrick and co are life-enriching, and laughing is more fun than pouting and staring into the distance. The end.

Here is some food for thought: Alice has visions of the future, the moment a decision is made she sees everything that will occur, her and Edward planned that birthday party, despite Bella outright telling them I do not want to have a party, I am not comfortable with it. They then gang up on her and guilt her into to having one anyway. Alice also decorates the entire house, and put out all of the glass plates that Bella later gets thrown into, plates that dont need to be used by anyone but Bella. In the book Myers describes at least a half a dozen plates stacked up by an enormous cake. If you really put some thought into everyone's actions within that book it shows the lengths that this "family" goes to in order to force Bella into being a compliant little Stopford wife. They knowingly take advantage of a young impressionable girl, over emphasizes the power imbalance between them, give her bits and drabs of affection, knowing that she has none of this from her actual family, (despite how well Charlie is betrayed in the movies, in the book, he is useless, abandons and ignores her) and then when the family see her pushing back, her insisting on becoming one of them, her not liking them choosing her food, or her clothes, etc. They purposefully take it all away, and do so, in the most devastating manner possible. They all just leave without a word, and have Edward take her into the woods where she gets lost and ends up with hypothermia. She is trapped in the woods for hours, something like six or so if I remember right, and then when she finally is found, and she recovers, she discovers that Edward, stole all of her pictures, mementos, anything that could possibly be used as a keepsake or remembrance to help her gently transition out of this horrible dynamic. They all intentionally use her worst fears against her, in order to completely break her, so that later, as you will see, they can mold her into exactly what they want. Any time she even comes close to crossing into, I have a backbone territory, she is subtilty reminded of the time they left her. Its easy for us as adults to look at this and go, hey this is horrible behavior, and not a good relationship. However, at 16/17 with Bella's already fragile emotional insecurities, it completely makes sense that she has these reactions. It is actually quite deep if you analyze it, the danger lies in the fact that this is book pushed onto kids, who idolize this relationship. Before Edward and Bella it was Romeo and Juliet, teens everywhere wanted an idealistic love like that, which always just baffled me. Whenever someone said this, my reply was always something to the effect of, okay so you want to be sold to the highest bidder, start a war, and then commit suicide, leaving your family utterly devastated, gotcha. At 14, 15, 16, & 17 we just don't have the understanding on why these relationships are unhealthy and/or the story is showing us what not to do. (Not that is what Myers was trying to accomplish but that is what she ended up doing.)

Romeo and Juliet literally met at Juliet's 13th birthday party, 17-year-old Romeo had just been complaining to his best friend about how the girl he likes would rather join a nunnery than sleep with him SECONDS before laying eyes on Juliet, and then HE goes out of his way to pursue her. A young girl who does not have the experience or maturity to understand anything other than this cute older boy thinks that she's pretty and giving her attention, and Romeo knows that. It's still more mainstream than it should be, with larger audiences than just young teens. I think the main issue is that Juliet is always aged up so that the whole thing seems less toxic (understandable, but even without the age gap, as you already listed, there are plenty more reasons for it's toxicity that too many people simply ignore).

@Heather Smith my reply was based on movies, not books. So maybe you are right on the books. I dont know because I never read the books. This is cinema reviews bot book reviews, though.
Generally speaking, post-traumatic stress disorder can happen or come out later based on a trigger. Some people dont have signs for decades after experiencing a single or multiple traumas.
Additionally, it's a misconception that a breakup couldn't trigger a trauma. Trauma is individual relative. Something emotionally experienced that feels like your dying can trigger it. PTSD is super complex. There are multiple types and multiple ways it can show up in the body behaviors. Saftey is key. So if we look at the movie, bella was safe with edward around and when he levt saftey was gone. Even though over all the relationship was not so good again, it's based on her perspective, her trauma, her bodies way of reacting to this, her bodies way of dealing with grief.

That scene where it's just spinning around Bella and she's catatonic because she's so depressed that an abusive guy left her?? That scene made me burst into tears when I first saw it because it felt like looking at me and made me relive my experience. That's how I was at a point in my life because I WAS in an abusive relationship with a frightening man. I didn't know if I was going to make it out alive and the chronic daily stress living in such a nightmare, being cut off from having friends, and being told how worthless, crazy, and stupid I was, left me without hope or the energy to even want to brush my hair. So I sat and stared because my chest felt like lead and just breathing sometimes was painful. I wanted time to stop because every day I knew I might not live through it and I was terrified of dying. When I got OUT of the abusive relationship, that kind of behavior STOPPED.
Having a man yell about how easily he could hurt you or kill you is NOT sexy. While I feel this illustrated severe depression really well and I even used it as a scene behind narration in a video I made on depression, she is more morbidly depressed than she should be for a guy leaving her, especially one that treats her the way Edward does. I mean I think of someone being this depressed who like... had their whole family killed in a car accident. They shouldn't be teaching girls this is normal behavior when a guy dumps you. It can be AWFUL, that's why they call it a broken heart. But going catatonic and ceasing to exist or have your own life?? A bit unhealthy.

And also that this channel is discussing mental issues, so there will probably be a higher number of survivors than on the average channel which in turn means that it would probably be nice to have a kind of safe space in the comment section. Just because people might be triggered by jokes like that does not mean that they haven't gone through or aren't going through therapy. They will probably be confronted enough with their triggers in their daily lives, I don't think it would be necessary to expand that experience to this comment section

Getting over a manipulative narcissist actually feels exactly how Bella enacted it. The numbness, screaming, and retreating from friends. If anything was portrayed well it was the physical reenactment of her heart through the breakup.

Watching this in Corona isolation. And the part where "Edward hurts people to protect them" is so cruel. My ex did the same to me. He told me on Christmas day that he had cheated on me (ldr). Naturally I broke up with him. Months later he got in contact and told me it wasn't true and he had only done it to "burn himself for me" because he didn't know where in the world he would be stationed from work. I've always hated the "it's better if you hate me" trope and having it happening to me felt like an insanely bad movie! Love your videos guys! Very insightful and funny!
Edit: Oh also, even when I read New Moon at seventeen I hated it because it just felt so wrong. Of course I wasn't aware why it felt that way. A decade later it made sense

Also three eps into this, but I wonder if you can trace Bella's clingy behavior to her parents, in particular her absentee mother who basically sent Bella away so she could chase her baseball player boyfriend. I also wonder if the years apart from her father developed a form of "daddy issues" which pushes her towards an older (much older) man who treats her a certain way.

    • @wandanemer2630

That part really pissed me off! I was like "Charlie no!" I think the only decent person is Carlisle but even then, his enabling of Edward is questionable. How did he even allow Edward to get involved with Bella? It's really depressing that we learn in Midnight Sun the other Cullens blamed BELLA FOR EXISTING and were totally okay with the idea of Edward killing her, so long as their lives weren't disrupted. Like, excuse me??? The 17 year old girl is to blame for literally showing up to school???
