  • I came back to my club ride too hard after the crash and injured myself. I tried to quietly drop back so I didn't slow them down but they waited for me. The literally, at times, pushed me home. Absolute legends every single one of them. The North Tyneside Riders are a great club.

    Been part of a shop ride for the past 5 weeks. I have not kept up with the group once. but they make sure that two or three out the group stay with me. So much support and encouragement from everyone. Makes me work harder to get into the group to pay these kind people back. So they can enjoy a the ride.

    We have what we call as "regroup ride". It means that we will stop at a certain check points to regroup. It doesn't matter whether you're a fast or slow. It's compulsory to stop and wait for others. Our motto "no one will be left behind". Our intention is to get as many cyclists as possible and enjoy the ride.

      Gone Cycling - So I got my first GoPro this xmas and was researching videos today. I'm a Canadian from Barrie Ontario that married a lass from Morpeth. As I'm watching this I noticed the Grand Hotel which is where we got married 12 years ago. What's the chances of that happening? Anyway, good video and shout for your local club. I ride with the Barrie Cycling Club here in Canada. We come back every other year to Northumberland, would love to catch a ride sometime.

    Racing clubs usually don't wait for a dropped rider, sport riding clubs will typically stop at each turn (or the like) on the ride and wait for any stragglers to get back on. If someone doesn't make it back, we'd go looking for them. It's up to the club to decide what type of riding they'll be doing. Now that I'm old, I like the "no drop" clubs. :)

    Late to the party but had to comment. Joined a bicycle club earlier this spring. Had ridden a touring bike went on tours on that 3 years prior, purchased a roadbike a year before joining the club so was an ok cyclist to begin with. My progress after the summer training with them was immense. I shared my goals with them, two main goals for this summer which was to make myself fit enough to make a planned cycle tour a bit easier and finish an imperial century on my road bike. They welcomed me into the club and kept up the motivation towards me to achieve my goals. My tour was probably the easiest I have done even if it was the most difficult area to explore, plenty of elevation and long days in the saddle. Then it came to my imperial century target. A few wanted to make it into a group ride. I had planned two routes for the day, one as a backup. 3 guys showed up at the start for the ride to help me along the way. We worked together and when we were close to finishing all of us felt fine and had plenty of energy to add to the route. So we ended up doing a double metric century on the day. Finding an organized group to ride with is essential, especially when the team members support each other when one member is down or chasing his targets. Its also much more fun to ride in a group than solo....;)

    There are group rides that are "No Drop" and that makes it fun. If someone gets a flat the whole group stops.
    Then there are rides that are hammer fests "but we will wait for you at a spot" if you get dropped and that makes you faster.
    Its always nice to have the stronger riders help the slower ones. I recall getting cramps really bad once and riders in the group took turns pushing me up a hill so I could recover from the cramp.

    I'm trying to get back following a bi-level lumbar injury in 2010 (did it changing a tractor tire at work). I had surgery and two years of physical therapy, followed by chronic, debilitating pain. Figured I'd never ride again, so I got rid of my bikes and all my kit--except for my very first road bike, which I kept for sentimental reasons: an 80s-era Univega/Shimano/Mavic/Campagnolo Frankenstein's Monster (which I named "Frank" because everyone kept calling it "Frankenbike."
    Now, having gained about 40 lbs and with my blood pressure raging, I've restored my bike and have been riding for about a week now. I'm only doing about 8 miles a ride, but it's actually lifted my mood and helped with my chronic back pain. I can't get into the aggressive positions anymore, but dammit, I'm riding again. :)
    One day, I hope to find a club like yours. This video actually made me a little misty eyed because I miss the camaraderie. Hope you're doing well. :)

    • @markord
      @markord  7 років тому

      Ian Snyder I'm sorry to hear about your injury. I once destroyed my ankle rock climbing. It took over 3 years to recover so for what it is worth I understand a little of the pain (back pain is horrid even when it is minor, I can't imagine it with a "proper" injury like that).
      I'm glad to hear you are on the bike again. I don't know if you are in the uk but if so a lot of place do "sky rides". They are gentle rides with people out for a fun ride rather than aggressive training ride. Might be worth a look to get back into it. I hope the riding goes well mate :)

      Gone Cycling Thanks, man. I live in in the USA, in Arizona. I've been passively looking for some kind of group, mostly just to talk with at this point. my schedule is really irregular as I work two jobs and seven days a week (soon to be three jobs), so my rides tend to be in the middle of the afternoon when sane people are indoors. :)
      Been making faster progress than expected. Still can't ride in the drops, but I've at least made it onto the big chain ring. :)
      Surprisingly, cycling is helping my back pain, so I've become really hopeful about the future. Thanks for taking the time. Hope you and yours are well.

    This is awesome.
    I'm an 18 year old and have recently been cycling a lot more during lockdown on my trusty mountain bike I've used intermittently for 10 years. At the moment I'm "road touring" with my friends who are doing it to pass the time and get to a destination (normally the park). We've max-ed at 40km (25mi) so far. I've started to realise I'm not like them. I think I like cycling a lot more. I bought my first jersey a couple weeks ago so eliminated the need for a bag and it feels epic. Also bought a saddle bag and mounted a bottle cage. I would say my fitness level is above the average person, since I tend to run, cycle or work out a bit everyday. I want to get more serious about cycling, but don't really know where to start. Do I join a casual/"sports" club (level 1 or 2)? Do I get a road bike? I really want to keep training and pushing myself with like-minded people. Any guidance from anyone would be much appreciated.

      Hey frosthopper Recently I got my first road bike after riding an old mtb for awhile and I can say it makes riding on those smooth roads a whole lot more fast and fun. Group riding also adds a whole other level to the sport, so if you can join a club then do, cuz it will help you improve and also some clubs can have some very competitive riders which can add some fun friendly competition to a ride win,win !! . I’m still a relatively new cyclist but I have got to a rather good standard quickly and something that’s gave me more motivation is Strava! Seriously Strava opens up a whole new world to your local roads!! Don’t let it take too much control of your rides but using its features can be interesting and just help You to push that little bit harder. Do some research on road bikes, get to know the sport, ride and have fun. It’s a Lifestyle not a hobby!! 😂😂 If ur buying a road bike get the best you can afford. A good entry level bike on a budget would be the new specialised Allez e5 or trek domane. But if u don’t mind buying second hand then you may be able to get a right good deal there, just learn about the bikes (groupsets, frame materials) and you’ll be able to make a good judgement. UA-cam can help with that.

      @@sprightlyrandom1550 Awesome, thanks for your reply. I have Strava so it's giving me some route inspiration, but they put many of the leaderboard and other features behind a paywall recently which is quite annoying.

      I'll use the information you gave me to get a good road bike. Thanks.

    Hi, do you have the new Hero5 camera? What might be happening is the built in wind reduction mode. Try keeping it on 'stereo only.'
    This will prevent the camera from adding some sound filters which help reduce the wind noise. Unfortunately the wind filter can reduce the road noise (noise you want in this case).

    • @markord
      @markord  7 років тому

      Matthew Song thanks for the comment. I discovered what was happening after messing about for a month. The go pro editor has two types of video it converts to: MP4 and Avi. For some reason it isn't fully compatible with avi so I changed the output format to MP4 and it no longer cuts the sound off or has trouble converting videos.

    There are 2 kinds of clubs: Pack clubs which ride together or die. And then there is the speed egoist racing club. They drop you to die just to get KOM on strava.

      To be fair, they didn’t expect it. I was injured and let them let them ride without alerting them I was off the back. Normally, they would slow if I mentioned I was off the back.

    I won't join a cycling club because I'm a strong believer that if we really want cycling to gain momentum in the UK, we need to both build an infrastructure for, and promote the Dutch/Danish/German attitude to cycling. Whilst a decent infrastructure is half of that, the other half is just making cycling look accessible. This means riding in regular clothes, with no need for a helmet. Cycling needs to, in general, be seen as a safe and relaxed mode of transportation that can be done on a casual basis without requiring any special equipment, clothing or a super light bike. This video is a good watch: ua-cam.com/video/zq28fU2AuMU/v-deo.html where Chris Boardman compares cycling in the UK and Holland.
    Seems cycling here is more about going as fast as possible and setting good segment times while wearing sponsored clothing to prove you're part of a club or team, and less about just cruising along and enjoying the scenery.

    • @markord
      @markord  6 років тому

      Will Davis Each to their own. I think we all want a much better cycling experience in the uk. I half agree with you. They type of cycling I do isn’t for everyone and I can’t imagine many people wanting to get sweaty blasting to work. But then, when I see people commuting, most of them are in regular clothing. I fully disagree with the helmet statement, however. Helmets make your journey safer. Encouraging helmet-less cycling is something I would never get on board with. On that point I think Boardman couldn’t be more wrong. I also do not think Dutch style cycling will ever become a thing in the uk, sadly.
      Also, my club has a range of active cycling styles. Yes there are racers with specialised equipment and light bikes. Yes there are those who push for speed but there are also other groups. Sunday’s, for example, are specifically for social rides. These rides head out into the country at an easy pace to explore nature and stop for coffee and cake. No racing there, just a bunch of social riders doing enjoying the scenery.

      Gone Cycling Well, to be completely honest with you, of the six times I have been there, I have only enjoyed my self one or at the most two days per trip and only two of those trips, all of the rest of the time and trips it has only been to visit family that was near death... or just sitting around the house felling like a prisoner. But with that said, those very few days that there wasn't some thing major happening, the beaches were very nice.
      Now that I have depressed you, I am glad that you are starting to feel better, if only psychologically.

    • @markord
      @markord  7 років тому +1

      Daniel Moore just have to find the right club. In my club we have people who average at 10mph through to 24 mph plus. What we do is create specific rides for specific groups. Plus almost all of our rides are no drop. Combined the two principles mean that you are always pushing yourself to get better but are together with folk who similar in level so you don't have to worry about performance. Also, on no drop rides the back marker knows what to expect, you aren't slowing them as their job is to keep people accompanied :)

    Waiting is part of cycling, shouldn't leave people behind tbh, it's seemingly creeping in with newbie clubs/riders (last 10 years or so) that seem to do this without thought so good on your club mates they didn't.
    However and no disrespect meant but you all ride way too close to the kerb, that's gonna cost you some point down the line and on that type of road (long straight) two up would be far better/safer for all including motorists. it takes less time for motorists to overtake you, spending less time on the opposite side of the road. You shouldn't be singling out on narrow roads/bends either.

    • @markord
      @markord  7 років тому +1

      An interesting point. I actually agree with you to some extent (I do not think riding central reduces risk as both times I have been hit by a car I was central). I think our club position is to try in split into smaller groups to ease passing times and ride single file on smaller or busy roads and double file on quiet roads. The problem we have around here is a lot of drivers think riding double breast is illegal (it isn't) but that has the effect of increasing the confrontational attitudes of drivers. We are a pretty big club (300 plus members) so having this policy massively decreases the negative image of the club.

    • @jhferu
      @jhferu 6 років тому

      ynotnilknarf39 I was thinking the same thing. I'm no expert, and I don't mean to criticise - my observations....
      when people ride single file close to the kerb, it makes them a lot less visible to other road users, especially those trying to emerge from a junction.
      If you're riding single file, close to the kerb, to give other road users space to pass - you need to consider if it is safe for them pass and if you should be encouraging them. Typically, on our narrow roads, there is only enough room for a motorist to safely pass a cyclist if there is lane that is free of traffic - the position of the cyclist makes little difference to this.

    • @jhferu
      @jhferu 6 років тому

      All that said, I can't really tell easily what the roads are like, the wide angle lens on a GoPro is quite deceptive. Also, a few of the times I thought you were close to the kerb, watching the video again, I realize you are either riding two abreast, or being pushed :)

  • @chriszanf

    I've never known clubs to drop riders unless the specific ride has a rule because its a fast training ride. No-one gets dropped. No-one gets left behind.

    Looks like a good bunch......which of course is how it should be, but seems like some people in clubs (from what I've read) can't help behaving like arseholes. As far as I'm concerned, if you want to ride faster than the group/club you're riding with then go and ride by yourself.
