Making Beaver Fur Mittens???

- With the 51st Annual Salmon Horse and Mule Sale coming up fast, I thought I'd better start making a few things. Years ago, I made a pair of mittens for a guy out of a couple of skunks. They turned out pretty neat, so I decided to make a pair out of Beaver.......well.....I had some technical difficulties!
Now if only I can find a right handed trapper with one arm....
Enjoy!
Nice mitten! When you said pucker in the palm i laughed for some reason.maybe you can get the pucker out on the left one.have a good day!
I hope so! I'm not sure what happened there? Ha!
Good morning friend
Good morning!!!!
Good Morning 🌄
GOOD MORNING!!!
That should keep the frigid weather out. Pretty darn unique!
Thanks! They are kind of neat!
Run my line the vermin ain't been back did see 2 old elk tracks we're 3 a couple.months ago probably woof shit now fresh snow no cat tracks either some gut birds scratched the grocery sacks off 2 traps at 1 set so dam many gut birds unreal they eat good cleanun up the vermin's left overs
Wow. You went into super Muskrat mode there for a while. Great job.
Ha! If I could really go that fast, I could maybe make some loot!
Great term for it LOL. I can see Super Muskrat Mode being used for a lot of the stuff he does.
Cool mittens to have when it's-20.
Enjoy your day. 🇺🇲🔪🔥🌲
They should be warm! Thanks!
Great job on those gauntlets. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Looks nice and toasty🧤Have a great day ❤
Thank you! You too!
Good morning. Very nice. Have a nice day
Good Morning! Thank you! I hope you have a great day too!
Heading to check vermin traps time is getting short. Only have 8 sets out vermin have visited all but 2. Of them the weather gave them a reprieve 2 weeks ago. Now there walking dead
@@KenCaudle Good luck to you!!!!
I like mittens. This is the best thing to keep your hands warm. Good job. Thanks for sharing, have a nice day!
Mittens are good. I think I like gloves a little better, but either way, I usually have to take them off to do anything anyway. Thank you. I hope you have a great day today also!
@@MuskratOutdoors Even with mittens, I have bunch of knitted and leather types that are fitted with the moveable fore finger for gun trigger freedom. But as ImixSpb has said, I figure it's the best thing to keep your hands warm. Great for riding snowmobile across open ground or a pond or lake where it's open to a frost bite wind (been frostbitten countless times on the coast of Labrador). Some are large enough to allow a ight pair of cotton gloves inside for use with the mitts off for quick use off and on.
Looks nice though and a sewing machine has many names. So does a chain saw. Thanks Gary!
Ha! It does! It works much better with thicker leather. Thiner stuff, it doesn't work near a well.
Just found you recently. I really appreciaye your style of vidos and the great topics you cover. You are my kind of person and I just wanted you to know thst what you offer here on you tube has great value. Thank you.
I appreciate that! Thank you very much! It's hard to come up with things for these videos, but it's what I'm doing anyway, might as well film it if folks are interested.
Total agreement here my brother. I've only been a year or so since I found him but I had the same reaction.
Good evening muskrat... interesting... and I'll be waiting for the story...of the one armed trapper... when he contacts you... and I'll tell you the story...of the midget water meter reader...😅... have a good night... peace brother...
HA! Was the Water meter reader knee deep?
Thx for sharing Brother. I've been wanting to try making some. I had a package of patterns. Mittens, gloves, etc. But I can't seem to find it. But I know where I can get more. Might be a nice hobby...like I don't have enough to do, lol.
You folks have a good day.
If you can't find them, let me know and I'll copy these. I bought this pattern pack a long time ago. I made a set of Skunk Mittens using them, and tried to make some gloves....gloves are hard to do!!! Mittens are easier, but still not that easy! I want to make some hats.
@MuskratOutdoors thanks a lot Gary. I wanted to try a hat too. I have some red fox that I tanned. Thought it would make a cute hat for my little girl, Ava.
Hope you have a good day and God bless you and your family my friend
I hope you do too! It's grey today, kind of dreary, but warm for February. (Feb-brrr-ary!)
That looks really warm
They should be! Needs a liner somehow though.
@@MuskratOutdoors The ones I have and have had, were lined with a sort of felt, there's an old timey name for it but I can't recall. Much of the Inuit and Innu traditional outdoor garb is made of it.
Nicely done. I'll bet that pucker wouldn't of bothered Jeremiah Johnson one bit 😉. Lol. Cheers my friend
Ha! Maybe not!
Since Idaho has a good reimbursement deal why don't you contact some ranchers having trouble and trap flat land they have bunk houses and so many of the rules go out the window. On private property some ranchers pay 2 kill woofs
Very interesting process!👍🏽😀❤️🇺🇸
THANKS!
I’ll bet he’d be a warm one handed trapper though…👍👍
Ha! Maybe!
Thats a super cool job , wel done sir 😊
Thank you very much!
Good work there sir 👍
Thank you very much!
Beautiful set of mittens. Not too shabby sir. ;)
Thank you very much!
That was awesome !!
You cracked me up with the right handed one armed trapper 😅😅 awwwww. Nice mitten. And great video too. Have a great day.
HA! THANKS! I know a one armed cowboy....but he's a Lefty!
Good Morning!!! Sorry I missed yesterday! Got 2 chords of rounds in & split wood & stacked it. I was wore out by late afternoon. I can see the degree of difficulty in making those. My sister is the seamstress here. Hi Miss Cindy !!
2 cords on a day is more than I want to do in the Summer! I won't do it in the Winter unless I have to. Those mittens are harder than I remembered them being.
Well thank you MO. I especially love that tune you used for the intro and the whole background music throughout. I watched the first time while folding a load o' laundry (I was late getting to your video today) and then again with a coffee and a smoke. Loved it. The skill and technique are fascinating.
In the ate 70's when I tended a trapline, my Inuit wife's Inuit aunt made beaver skin mitts and hat for me several times over those years. They were the best and not much dissimilar from yours, if at all. I'd be interested in knowing, once you've finished, whether I might be able to purchase them but we'll see. I've not bought anything online so we'll see; it may not be worth it on your end, compared to if you sold them from your display booth.
Thanks again and I just hope and pray that you and Cindy remain well and continue to be blessed as you both work to maintain your lifestyle and have us along at the same time. Seems like a tall order for anyone living in the convenience of urban life let alone the way your life demands a daily schedule many of us would never manage to keep up.
Till next time.
Thank you very much! I still need to finish the other one....and add a liner if I can. It is a lot of work, but I wouldn't trade it for another way of life. I'm broke, but happy......I could be wealthy and miserable living in a city. It's tough sometimes, but a good trade.
beautiful Gary, I would like to order a pair. when can I pick them up.
Ha! Thanks! I need to finish these first!
Strong work Mr Gary! I always enjoy your leather working videos. There's a lot more to a pair of quality mitts than I could have imagined. Hands are hard to fit for, huh?
Good stuff, and thank you for sharing this with us! Are you planning on making spur straps and reins and headstalls for the horse sale? I bet you do well there with your booth? It's excellent quality tack!
They are harder that it seems they should be. I would like to make some gloves....I tried once....they ain't easy! Mittens are just a thumb and one big finger. I don't make many headstalls anymore, but chaps, saddlebags, things like that. I've made a lot of saddles too, but they take so much time and money to make, it's hard to come out very good on them.
@MuskratOutdoors yes sir. I once had the dream of making saddles myself. I even had an opportunity to take over a cobbler/saddle shop in Northern Wyoming about 20 years ago. I would have enjoyed the work, but I could tell the customer base was shrinking back then. Luckily, it's strong again from what I've seen. Saddles are a big investment on both sides. I think the smaller items are where it's at honestly? Maybe a guy could take orders for belts and purses at the sale...that is if you want to. You're a good hand Mr Gary. Strong work friend.
I was wondering if you thought of making Sadde seat covers ? That might be a good item to have for Apri or maybe some other kind of decoration item. Thankyou for your vidios
Hmmm.....I never have made those....I'll have to think on that.
I make all sorts of things,....need to start doing it again. It will be here before I'm ready.
Looks warm and toasty!
I think they will be!
I like hand stitching. Feels more satisfying. I think it's better done also. Thanks For the video.
I do too. Two needle stitching is stronger too since it's basically sewn twice. How's your back doing?
@@MuskratOutdoorsback still screwed .thanks for asking
@@stevehamilton6070 Not fun. I've done something to my leg. It's numb and tingling from my butt down? Muscles twitching too? Must be a pinched nerve? I hope it goes away before too long.
@@MuskratOutdoors same here. It's a pinched nerve from way back. And carrying to much weight for to long.
I had thought about making mittens out of raccoon fur since I don't have beavers here. I also thought that an old flannel shirt would make a good lining. I had an old pair of the military mitts but they just didn't do the job. Nice job on the mitts Gary.
If you decide to try it, let me know and I can copy this pattern.
Awesome videos u put out, nothing like home
THANKS!
Morning fine sir 🌻
GOOD MORNING!
😊 good morning, i like the mittens Muskrat. Id use something like that. Thanks for the video..
Thanks Amye!
@@MuskratOutdoors sure thing Muskrat.
Is that a speedy stitcher? Did you tan the beaver skin yourself? So many questions!
I have wanted to try the same type of thing with muskrat.
Your leather work and tinkering type vids are among my favorites.
Thanks!
No, it's just a standard awl, and two needles. I have a speedy stitcher I use sometimes though. They are great for repairs. I've never had much luck tanning, so there are factory tanned. I'm glad to hear you like the leather work ones. There will probably be more here for awhile.
It looks really good! Great job my friend!!
Thank you!
You could put the tail you had on the knuckles. Like bark busters for a bike snowmobile. Or a no dog sled
I want to make a beaver hat with the beaver tail for a brim. Wouldn't that be neat!
Very nice, 2 months ago “Buster Creek Outdoors” a trapper in Canada and a UA-camr also made Beaver gauntlets. He gave them away in a drawing when he hit 1000 subscribers, what are your plans for this pair? Keep working hard, I look forward to your daily videos, take care my friend.
That's a great prize! Every year, we have a big Horse & Mule Sale here. I've had a booth since 1992 selling my leatherwork. Thank you very much. Trying to do one every day is tough! I'm not sure how Idaho Hillbilly has been able to keep it up for so long!
@@MuskratOutdoors Exactly! It amazes me what you guys get done in a day. But maybe not everyone's lifestyle or daily commitments off the beaten track will allow the time for fresh daily content. Just sayin'. But we do enjoy them daily, lol.
looking good did you tan the hides your self
No, I've tried tanning them, but they never have turned out very well....Thanks!
Привет Гари,варежки из меха бобра и выдры раскупают как хот доги.
Доброе утро! Приятно слышать! Я надеюсь, что это так!
I'm not sure where to buy beaver pelts at.
There's folks on ebay that sell them. I might have a few for sale next year too.
Supposed to get some snow in Mt. Hope it keeps the bruins in longer. Don't ruin my woof sets
I hope so too. Having any luck? Did you see they want to dump a bunch more in Idaho. I guarantee ya, it's not because of bears, but it worked to slow Montana's wolf trapping, so they will try it here too.
@@MuskratOutdoors they haven't been back since I got everything ready for action. Not long left till the 15 th there's a huge dog track is 6 inches across. Not melted out. I added traps where they have had free meals confident they'll be waiting if they come back not getting a bunch of snow just wet shit I put ice melt underneath and on top of traps so the brawn 9s will have them caught
@@KenCaudle That's the hardest thing about wolves. They come through an area regularly, but not often. People think they are like coyotes, but they are not. Good Luck! When they come back, I hope all of your traps are full!
@@MuskratOutdoorsour vermin comes threw often in the swan valley is the wintering grounds so they just run the roads no reason to go far. Never More than 4 days a couple come by. Trouble is the Rd is there sanctuary. We have to go 150 from the road. Idaho has alot better rules it takes time 2 get them to sets 150 ft from there travel routes but I'm getting them there
Where most woof trappers screw up they put out the rottenest bait that they can find. It works 2 get them 2 s set but 2 keep them there or coming back they have 2 get something good that they can eat. Just as a human goes to a restaurant if you don't like the food you wouldn't be back. Beaver is like crack cocaine to woofs. They will come 4 miles just 4 a bite. Beef scraps are legal and work really well not much work to cover them up so gut birds don't eat them all. Once the woof get fed good they come back. Stay around for a couple days till get it ate. Put dog crap 30 feet away they can't resist checking it out. It's the weather that screws traps up freeze thaw snow
That only took a couple minutes to make, nothin to it. Lol. Take care.
HA! EXACTLY! I need to do the other one still....and line them if I can.
If you don't make one a day. What are Kieth and I gonna talk about. I have ideas. For videos. I'll mail them to you. Haha
P.S.. it should be there Monday
HA! HELLO SHERMAN!!
Good! I was wondering and hoping it didn't get lost in the mail. If it didn't show up before too long, I was going to call ya.
