    Those mittens are similar to the ones issued by the Air Force, and I assume other branches of the military also. They was great, but we could not work on aircraft while wearing them and usually only wore the regular gloves with wool inserts in them to keep our hands warm. Even with that there were times when we had to use our bare hands to do some of our work. Those gloves look great and will keep your hands warm much longer when in the cold environment.

    Hahaha! There’s so much going on here. Treasures inside of treasures.
    The good: these mittens look great! Best way to stay warm, and help pass along a wonderful skill. Thank you!
    The bad: the metal sign behind you is absolutely bad-a55! Man, that looks sharp!
    The ugly: HAHAHA! I’m not even going to go there. Not safe for kids. I can’t wait to show this to my brothers and father. Sorry folks, Joshua had to. There are sacred laws that must be observed.

    Josh, if you sew a leather loop to either the inside or outside seems, you can hook a lanyard that connects them together (goes behind your neck over your shoulders) so you can take them off without laying them down so you can work with your hands when necessary.

      Agreed, I plan to add those (just wasn't part of the kit or instructions). My WeatherWool actually has elastic bands inside the kangaroo pouch for securing the lanyards as well.

    Wool, fur and down…there’s a very good reason people that live in areas where the high temps for the day are still sub zero traditionally use these natural materials for clothing. TIPS: Scour thrift stores for fur, wool and down items that can recycled into more practical items, like mittens! Felt wool by machine washing in hot water and dry on high heat. Repeat until weave is as tight as you’d like, or the item no longer shrinks. (Sorry for intrusion into kit sales)

    I have googled but i havent found an answer. Why have the fur like that? With the skin facing inwards? Why not the other way around? Would it not be better and create a warmer glove?
    And one thing i might add.
    Better to turn the fur so the hairs are pointing downwards when weqring the glowes. Letting debris and water just fall out of the glove instead of the other way around. Like that you can just shake them dry/clean..

    I wonder what the isulation differance is between having fur outside vs fur inside? Wool liner aside, I can see fur being outside would slow the wind contact surface area but being on the inside, it adds to air warming capabilities. Great project vid series.

    • @timothylongmore7325
      @timothylongmore7325 4 роки тому +1

      Interesting point. Maybe to warm with it in? Many native clothing goes fur out. Fur out might shed water better as well. I rarely were mittens myself. Too warm. I am in the great white north , work outside almost everyday. Maybe if I snowmobiled I'd use them.

    • @eddiemason4316

    • @lureofthenorth
      @lureofthenorth 4 роки тому +2

      Putting the fur in could work as well, but you would sacrifice a lot of dexterity as they would become a much bulkier mitt. The density of the fur allows it to trap warm air, even when its facing out. So you are able to add a lot of insulation to a mitten without adding extra bulk inside the mitt.

    • @lureofthenorth
      @lureofthenorth 4 роки тому +2

      The dense beaver fur would help shed some moisture, but they are primarily a cold, dry weather mitten. My reasons for selecting beaver are that the dense downy layer makes beaver fur incredibly warm and soft and it's also traditional and beautiful!

    I’m so jealous. Damn I can’t wait to make some of these. Did you order the felted wool? If so what thickness? I plan on trapping some beaver this season specifically for this reason, did you tan those beaver hides or is that a tannery pelt? Please I hope you answer. Its hard finding someone who will actually teach you. Seems like everyone just wants the subscriber and comments. Even though this wasn’t supposed to be instructional, I noticed some things that I didn’t think of, one being the webbing wrist strap. Thank you.
