The simple answer is : first of all windows people don’t even buy m1 macbook air / pro. Processes, handling of files, apps on mac os are cumbersome for no god damn reason . On top of that any experiment with apps can lead to irreversible memory wastage. No serious software is free on mac os. Please tattoo this on your wrist. Be it parallel via which u wanna run windows or the windows itself. No key generator works here in that case. If windows people still wanna flaunt the apple logo please go for mac with intel and bootcamp it. Oh by windows people I didn’t mean people who do video editing only. I meant some serious work on windows. Like running a tfs server from it, setting up a sql server . You name it. On top of that bootcamp helps to allocate entire RAM on windows os , not like parallel where you need to decide how much RAM to allocate to windows, so with M1 you will end up buying a minimum of 16 gb of RAM version vs minimum of 8gb version of INTEL macs in this regards. What common in tech reviews are like no single youtuber got the guts to speak truth rather than nurturing the fake apple impression. It’s unfortunate but a fact. Peace 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
When a computer is sent for repair, normal procedure is to install the latest version of the macOS that was previously on that machine, e.g. the latest Catalina or the latest Big Sur. Luke may have been given a choice because he would have had no clue which OS the computer had been running.
If you can pick up a 10gig networking for a cheap price and you need an Xcode build box or some kind of file ingestion node, these things are definitely worth it!
I have an i7 1TB 8meg RAM mac mini sealed in it's box sitting in a drawer as i didn't think my mac pro 2012 would still be usable by now. That mac mini is likely to sit in my drawer a lot longer as my mac pro cheese-grater looks like it wants to get to 2030.
I just got a gold deal on a late 2015 imac. Advertised as “for parts” at like $250 plus a fair shipping rate with a dead logic board. I get it and turn it on, and it flashes the file icon, implying it isn’t reading the hard drive. But definitely not dead. I had gotten the thing for an experiment (late 2015 iMac display on a late 2014 imac) So crack the thing open, and they never plugged the hard drive in. (2TB) The data cable was plugged in but not the power connector. I plug that in and Super weird config and I am guessing they harvested the actual Ram because high capacity ddr3 is so expensive now. I7-6770k and an m395x (4GB) graphics, but only 8gb ram. Thankfully it will work with 1600mhz ram so I come out ahead if cannabalize my Late 2014 iMac and then then it into a second display. $250 for what was at the very least about as good a display as you will find, and it turns out to be a top spec late 2015 iMac.
Got the same machine for code dev for £450 uk. Was in perfect condition and the seller had even put the black plastic peel off over the ports back on. Upgraded the ram to 32gb and it's perfect for my use case. GPU sucks, but meh. I don't do video production or game on it. Slotted it in to a visa mount with the exhaust pointing up and it stays pretty cool....for an intel ;)
If y'all consider M1's GPU underpowered, remember that in CrossOver it gives 50-55 FPS in GTA V on 1080p and medium graphics in the MacBook Pro with fans ramped up full. Throw in a laptop cooling pad and I got 60-65 FPS with rare stutters and temps not going up 80°C.
I got an eBay 7th gen iPad deal where it was $100 and had no digitizer. Turns out it had AppleCare plus and was also 128gb so I got it replaced. This was when the 7th gen iPad was the latest budget iPad.
Purchased a two 2016 MacBook Pro 13" for $400 each with the common display issue. Seller did not realize Apple covers the repair for those. Sent them in were repaired and sent back in under a week.
Good choice if you’re a professional working on 3D environment or hard works and if you’re weekend gamer. M1 s are more user friendly macs but intel ones much more professional.
watching this from my 2018 i7 hexacore intel.. no complaints in 2024 other than UA-cam 4K playback.. and it gets hot AF when running Docker workloads.. doesn't beat my ryzen desktop setup
Otherwise go for the m1 version as you can both get way better performance and save the time cost and cost of risk while doubling the price (to my reckon an m1 Mac mini can be as low as 699 on Amazon?????)
eBay is a risk but when it pays off it pays off! I just got a 2011 27" iMac 🖥 for $130 off Facebook market place. It's my first Mac and just wanted something to play around with. Mostly just using for work and light browsing & UA-cam so it's working just fine. Spent another $20 for 8g of ram and will upgrade the HDD. Anyone have suggestions on what's cheap but good for upping the GPU?
I own an 2019 i9 imac, with a vega48 and 128GB of ram (upgrade was done by myself for cheap) and it is an excellent machine for video editing. Soooo I Thought when you can get one like that cheap on Ebay I would recommend it, but... They are still expensive. Around 3000 Euro, and you need to upgrade the RAM too. So its nice to know that this over 2 year old Mac still has a lot of value I am not going to replace it any time soon, it does what I want it to do fast, and Final Cut does 4K perfectly and very fast. Think by the time I replace this, it is 6-8 years easy. Oh And I think Luke is very cute, pitty he's in Florida
Stop bashing M1 GPU it is just incredible considering power consumption but also performance compared to other integrated GPU. For seriousGPU performance we need M1X.
I have a 2018 iMac mini i3 with 32 Gig RAM/126 SSD with an (eGFX Breakaway Box 550) Thunderbolt 3 EGPU running a Radeon RX 580 8 GB. I play WOW at full settings and get 60fps (that's not a typo). I don’t know what FPS are achieved on the M1 Mac mini but since Apple doesn’t support EGPU’s on the M1, that’s a deal breaker for me. Let’s hope Apple addresses the GPU issues soon. BTW, my 2018 Mac mini is a space heater, works good in the winter....
M1 Mac minis are definitely not "better in every single way", there are at least three things, important for some customers, that current Intel Mac minis are better: - they can have up to 64GB RAM that is even user upgradeable (sort of...) - they have much better I/O with 4 Thunderbolt ports - they're able to virtualize Windows or other x86 operating systems (including previous macOS) (important if you're a web developer, or run those "minis" as servers or build machines, which is often the case) Yeah, CPU performance is (slightly, with 6 core models) lower, GPU well... 😅 But for some users more RAM is crucial to even start thinking about making some work.
The M1 Mac mini is NOT better in every single way though.... I bought the M1 Mini and the only reasonably priced one is only 8GB RAM and 8 GB of RAM is not much nowadays and the 16GB version is VERY expensive since you have to purchase the upgrade at SEVERELY inflated Apple pricing. The 2018 Intel mini can be upgraded with a simple 16GB RAM kit off Amazon. That is the main reason that I promptly returned my M1 Mini and now I have a 2015 Macbook pro 15, which while OLD, is at least more upgradeable than M1 for much cheaper AND after I can no longer update it I can use Linux or Windows on it.
I bought a 2011 MacBook Air, guy said it worked but what he didn't mention is that the battery wouldn't charge. I already got it for 100$ so I just got a battery off of amazon, works great, just need to figure out how to rebend the display back into shape and the rubber bezel is slightly damaged
At least M1 Mac Mini runs Tomb Raider at 50-60 fps 1080p and 20-30 fps 4k. That is light years more powerful than intel gpu. Intel never too their GPU on die seriously, sat twiddling their fingers. I suggested years ago they start making Proper on die GPU's and dedicated GPUT cards.
Just the video i needed from my favorite apple tech youtuber. I'm in the process on switching from PC to mac, found an apple cinema 27" for 150$! Now i just need to decide between the M1, 2012 or 2018 Mac mini BTW. M1 Mac mini in Sweden is 980us $
Good assessment and conclusion, I fully agree. In Europe the warranty is two years, which gives a longer window to find a “sick” Mac mini deal as you did.
Why do you need to call peoples' computers garbage? I have a 2018 mini and absolutely love it. It does everything I need it to perfectly, and more. And I'm not embarrassed to say I paid over $800 for it direct from Apple. Sorry it's not your beloved M1, but it's mine and I like it.
Apple said in their earnings report yesterday that they are going to be SEVERLY impacted by the chip shortage. Expect major delayed MacBook and Ipad releases… 😬😬😬
I know this is an old video, but I'm just getting into mac. I have everything Apple, but a mac. I just need a mac for everyday use (play around with) and I wanted something basic... I almost went with a basic M1 model, but I kept looking for a bargain. I lucked out... I found a mac mini intel 2018 with an i5, 32GB RAM, and a 1TB SDD in almost perfect condition for just $200. I couldn't past up that deal, not sure if the seller knew anything about macs, or didn't know what he had.
Regular people (not youtubers) would be told to go away. They fixed it because you are you. Try sending someone who isn’t you to try the same things, they will be told “ you took this thing apart, void the warranty, we’re not doing anything for you, good luck with your life and your broken Mac.” Come on Luke, get a dose of reality the rest of us get treated like garbage.
I think you got a great deal. You summed it up and got lucky with it in warranty. We still like these type or else we would not be watching! Keep it up.
Interesting. I have been considering one of these, or more accurately, the i7 version for running a DAW.... not so sure now, especially as I can afford to look for a used M1.....
This would make a decent Windows machine with BootCamp or Parallels for the non-gamer who needs access to Windows but wants to remain in the Apple universe.
I wonder if the reason you were asked which version of macOS you wanted was because it was covered by AppleCare that came from a business purchase. Whenever I put in for a repair on business machine in my work, they ask what OS I want, regardless of its its a laptop or desktop. Did they ask if there was a known admin account? that might be another clue.

What if you put the m1 mac mini insides into the space gray mac mini? since they’re the same size and you’ll have the first m1 space gray mac mini
Just bought one of these for Boot Camp use! It's a shame the Apple Silicon Macs don't support Windows natively anymore. Yes you can run W11 Arm but it's not the same and some apps just don't work.
It's not close, performance-wise, but for $300, that's a great deal!
A lot has changed with used prices in only a few years. I’ve seen i5 models with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD for under £300 and branded 32GB RAM kits for £50. That puts it in the same price range as used 6 or 8 core 2013 Mac Pros with the same RAM and SSD size in 2024.
I recently scored a maxxxed out early 2013 15inch retina MacBook pro for just 360usd!! Absolutely amazing the only issues is it needs a new battery but everything else is in pristine condition
Remember the m1 gpu has as much horsepower as a gtx 1050 compare to inshit hd graphics
If you can pick up a 10gig networking for a cheap price and you need an Xcode build box or some kind of file ingestion node, these things are definitely worth it!
Personally I would go with a refurb 2018 mac mini and a cheap egpu simply because you can run boot camp.
Luke you could make it worth it by drilling some holes in the top for airflow
I had gotten the thing for an experiment (late 2015 iMac display on a late 2014 imac)
So crack the thing open, and they never plugged the hard drive in. (2TB) The data cable was plugged in but not the power connector. I plug that in and
Super weird config and I am guessing they harvested the actual Ram because high capacity ddr3 is so expensive now.
Picked up a MM vesa mount for the back of my monitor. It’s. fantastic accessory.
Hey Luke, I just purchased a refurbished 2020 Intel Core i5 MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD for 50% off original price!
I got a m1 mac mini on ebay from a refurbished seller for $549. I can't justify buying any intel mac at that price point.
I got an eBay 7th gen iPad deal where it was $100 and had no digitizer. Turns out it had AppleCare plus and was also 128gb so I got it replaced. This was when the 7th gen iPad was the latest budget iPad.
I’ve been waiting for this since that Genius Bar episode :)
Same
Purchased a two 2016 MacBook Pro 13" for $400 each with the common display issue. Seller did not realize Apple covers the repair for those. Sent them in were repaired and sent back in under a week.
When it wouldn't power on I suspected the power supply.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a problem with both the logic board and the power supply.
Sweet deal! I’d hook it up to an egpu and then it should be able to play some games.
Luke, which MacBookPro do you recommend? price range 500-750 or 750-1000 dollars, upgradable is a plus?
My recommendations:
500-750$: used 2019 MacBook Pro with good specs;
750-1000$: used M1 MacBook Pro/new M1 MacBook Air, whatever you like most
Honestly, I’d get one of these, and one of those Black Magic pro 580 e-gpus.
Yup and you have the option of windows bootcamp.
Good choice if you’re a professional working on 3D environment or hard works and if you’re weekend gamer. M1 s are more user friendly macs but intel ones much more professional.
@@berkinerengurman1401 still imo more versatile and practical too. The 27” imac still to me makes way more sense than any M1.
Brand new its $1100 for an i5, 8gb of RAM, and 512gb?!?! How are those considered impressive specs?
Because it’s Apple. A Windows PC with those specs can be built for like, $75 lol.
Did the same thing with a broken evga 2070 (broken 300 bucks on eBay), and got a 2070 super back.
Can we just talk about how Luke has the ability to open Mac minis with his bare hands 😂
How is he supposed to do it? With his feet?
@@alexwr yes
watching this from my 2018 i7 hexacore intel.. no complaints in 2024 other than UA-cam 4K playback.. and it gets hot AF when running Docker workloads.. doesn't beat my ryzen desktop setup
Could you put an M1 Mac Mini logic board and power supply into a space gray Mac Mini?
You just gave Luke a new video: The "new" m1 mac mini "pro"
My 2012 i7 mini is a faithful beast... It just can't do lots of plugins in PT
My mum has the 2011 one it’s actually good other than that screen and battery isn’t good
This is a very good and lucky deal when your use case needs x86 rather than arm, say some specific programming or gaming
Soooo
I Thought when you can get one like that cheap on Ebay I would recommend it, but...
They are still expensive. Around 3000 Euro, and you need to upgrade the RAM too.
So its nice to know that this over 2 year old Mac still has a lot of value
I am not going to replace it any time soon, it does what I want it to do fast, and Final Cut does 4K perfectly and very fast.
Think by the time I replace this, it is 6-8 years easy.
Oh And I think Luke is very cute, pitty he's in Florida
Stop bashing M1 GPU it is just incredible considering power consumption but also performance compared to other integrated GPU. For seriousGPU performance we need M1X.
i know apple silicon is new and exiting but these intel mac videos are still interesting and entertaining.
I just bought the 2018 Mac mini 64gb ram + 2tb HD for $600 on ebay. Think it was a bargain and does the job
Lets compare both maxed out Mac Minis. (16gb Silicone vs i7 Mac Mini) cause the price points are similar with both.
If you are on a tight budget, you get the best you can. The one you got, even at,$400, is good for a lot.
M1 Mac minis are definitely not "better in every single way", there are at least three things, important for some customers, that current Intel Mac minis are better:
- they can have up to 64GB RAM that is even user upgradeable (sort of...)
- they have much better I/O with 4 Thunderbolt ports
- they're able to virtualize Windows or other x86 operating systems (including previous macOS) (important if you're a web developer, or run those "minis" as servers or build machines, which is often the case)
Yeah, CPU performance is (slightly, with 6 core models) lower, GPU well... 😅 But for some users more RAM is crucial to even start thinking about making some work.
The "Miani Luck" is not dead.
I'm wondering if the original owner knows that his/her still under warranty!
Why they did not think about the warranty??
One thing you never do. Is run a EGPU on those why not ? I mean it has thunderbolt. give it a shot it might be good or fun . Video to watch .
The M1 Mac and the endless videos youtubers are milking out of it. Will it ever stop?
Luke Miani, make a video about that!
Just the video i needed from my favorite apple tech youtuber.
I'm in the process on switching from PC to mac, found an apple cinema 27" for 150$!
Now i just need to decide between the M1, 2012 or 2018 Mac mini
BTW. M1 Mac mini in Sweden is 980us $
Or maybe a Mac Pro 5,1 wich i originally wanted found one for 510$ but it is single CPU :/
This should have been a 'Fancy Luke' ad spot!😂
Should have asked for like sierra or Yosemite for the install OS
Lolllll
That’s pretty cool that the 2018 Mac mini has upgradeable Ram. I thought my 2014 model was the last model to do it.
1st sponsor ad I actually watched.
Good assessment and conclusion, I fully agree. In Europe the warranty is two years, which gives a longer window to find a “sick” Mac mini deal as you did.
Cinebench was closer than I thought it would be considering that i5s aren’t hyperthreading
0.25 per cent is not low. Anything over 0.20 is high. John Oliver did a piece on retirement funds that explains part of it.
Video starts at 8:16
Bought the base model M1 mac mini for 500euros. Came with scratches and no box. Still worth it imo.
He's just a shill
Best deal i have gotten was a 2015 12 inch macbook for $400 back in 2017.
Used it up until a year ago
5:28 And that is a little sus....
luke do you still main the m1 imac, or are you back on imac pro?
im still sticking to mac pro myself...
😐
I'd throw the extra 3 into upgrading the SSD.
My i7 Mini gets toasty just sitting there doing nothing. I think the power supply eats electrons even while at rest.
GOT A i7 2.6 IMAC MINI 256 SSD FOR $80 NOW THATS A DEAL!!!!
I always enjoy your videos, and since I am an everyday Mac user, also very informative. Thank you!
Further bonus, you can make a space grey M1 Mac mini
"hai avuto un culo della Madonna", that in Italian means that you've been so lucky that your luck goes beyond everything in a specific occasion 😂
