Balan isn't actually supposed to be the bad guy in the game, and every enemy is supposed to mean something, but it's never explained and is really lame for that reason.

I had never heard of Balan Wonderworld until I saw it at GameStop maybe three days ago. The character on the box looks like some kind of Knights into Dreams fan OC from Tumblr.
I mean the game is bad but huge part of the reason why it even got attention in the first place was due to Balan's character design, I think it's dishonnest to say it's comparable to tumblr OCs.

A more accurate version is that its 2 cars crashing into eachother in slow motion, one Driver is the playerbase and the other is the devs knowing fully well they are going to be the sole reason Square never picks up another platformer.
This game isn't badly animated and its style seems good, which is why it's such a shame that the gameplay and story are worth zilch And credit where it's due with Balan's design and voice. A genuinely charming and neat character wasted on... this

My understanding of this game's design philosophy is that Yuji Naka wanted to make a game so mechanically simple while throwing in a whole bunch of power-ups for the illusion of depth, not realizing that the power ups are limited by default because of the limited controls. The result is... whatever the hell this is.

For something called Wonderworld with a core being looking as quirky and unique as Balan, you'd at least expect that the world you dive into would be a tad more interesting. You know, to fit the theme of depressed people running away from reality to drown in their unreal fantasies and those could be very unique and weird and a little unsettling and all that stuff. There's a lot of potential here. But no, instead you get a boring basic 2000s platformer oversaturated fantasy land with furries. Sure the levels still relate to characters' traumas, but in a very shallow uncreative way (in the end in every case it's just an oversaturated furryland). So disappointing.

My understanding of this game's design philosophy is that Yuji Naka wanted to make a game so mechanically simple while throwing in a whole bunch of power-ups for the illusion of depth, not realizing that the power ups are limited by default because of the limited controls.
The result is... whatever the hell this is.

See..those animated cutscenes are so pretty and well done and then I remember what the rest of the actual game and gameplay are like and I feel my world crash around me

The design of Balan made me hype, the beginning cutscene got me excited... And boy, then the gameplay came.
He's one of the very few good things about this Bootleg peice of garbage. At least he is a genuinely cool character with personality unlike all of the lifeless stuff.
I played the demo and was really excited about it because I thought the demo was just the gameplay and they were going to add the story in the actual game..... i was wrong

The guy with the top hat seems interesting I think I'll like him." and well...at least I was right about balan being good. He was one of the few good things about the game. Balan Wonderland is the result of Mario Odessy, The Zelda CDI games and A hat in time puking into one bucket then that bucket being set into a garbage can then it being stuck in a dumpster fire

I saw this game and was excited about it, but once you start playing it gets really boring and it is hard to figured out the story
A crying shame because it has the skeleton of a decent game, but it's missing the meat. This game is the remains of a delicious dinner sitting on a nice plate. You really wanted to enjoy the dinner and you looked forward to it but when you got to sit down at the table, only the scraps were left
It didn't sit right with me and even I was disappointed
that last part though had me crying, you trying to talk over the broken ai screaming had me fucking busted up.

For something called Wonderworld with a core being looking as quirky and unique as Balan, you'd at least expect that the world you dive into would be a tad more interesting. Maybe a little surreal with more of a circus/theatre/Alice in Wonderland imagery. You know, to fit the theme of depressed people running away from reality to drown in their unreal fantasies and those could be very unique and weird and a little unsettling and all that stuff. There's a lot of potential here. But no, instead you get a boring basic 2000s platformer oversaturated fantasy land with furries. Sure the levels still relate to characters' traumas, but in a very shallow uncreative way (in the end in every case it's just an oversaturated furryland). So disappointing.
The most memorable part of this game for me is when a friend speed ran the game to get a refund on steam

The story was nothing more than Sonic Adventure all over again but with the cast replaced by The Werehog and Chip, both of whom were entirely unneccessary. Meanwhile, the followups Sonic Colors and Generations were decent... and then Sonic team shat the bed again with Lost World.
It's literally the highest budget bootleg game ever.
You can feel the work put into it and it still feels wrong in every way.
