  • A playthrough of the region-exclusive character Arthur in the arcade version of Namco’s SoulCalibur/ Soul Calibur 1.
    Yeah, a region-exclusive character. Don’t see those too often. I’ll need a vid on Norimaro at some point when I return to the MvC series, come to think of it.
    Here’s another oddity of this already rather odd series which gets brought up from time to time. After Hwang was made a regularly playable character from Ver 2. of Soul Edge onwards, Namco had to think up another character for this game to avoid offending the Korean audiences they wished to profit off of. You see, after the end of the Warring States Period of Japan (Sengoku Jidai) in the late 16th century, the unified Shogunate of Japan set its sights on conquering the Korean peninsula, a feat which Japan would eventually fulfil 300 years later after their victory in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5. Although the shogunate’s invasion failed, Japan’s occupation and brutal treatment of the Korean peoples during the 20th century has kept in the minds of both Korean states ever since and has understandably made them less than cordial towards other historical instances of Japan’s attempts to subjugate them. As Samurai were the basis of the Shogunate army which attempted the invasion, well, Namco rather correctly assumed that Koreans wouldn’t be too fond of them. What was the solution they came up with? Take Mitsurugi and rework him into an Englishman pretending to be a samurai for shits and giggles. This is just a little bit inaccurate to say the least, but as the English aren’t exactly personas non gratas to Koreans (by contrast, most of the Korean friends I’ve had have been quite Anglophilic) it was a pretty good move on Namco’s part. Of course, in the same year (1998) the South Korean government lifted the ban on the direct importation of Japanese goods, and so Arthur was never needed again, as imports did not have the same cultural restrictions or expectations which they did prior.
    I rarely get to cover one of my fellow countrymen (from what I recall) so, well, it’s nice to get to cover Arthur at least, for what he is. Which is more or less basically a joke, as the British back then saw themselves as superior to the Japanese (most people, in fact, which is a sentiment which hasn’t really changed since) and so emulating a foreigner would have probably been seen as a sign of madness. That said, nowadays we do have weeaboos, but they don’t exactly have the best reputation either. Arthur is just English phony samurai Mitsurugi therefore, but hell if he isn’t an interesting anomaly to say the least, in a game which did its best to emulate the enticing secrets of the Tekken franchise. Luckily, we will get to see Arthur again, though like here there won’t be a ton of effort put into it.
    I’ll be moving onto the fantastic Dreamcast port of SoulCalibur soon, but first I want to take a look at another interesting anomaly.

    Now THIS is the guy i was thinking about earlier. As for the " Englishman pretending to be a samurai for shits and giggles." part, that is actually based on a real guy from history named William Adams who in the early 1600's became a samurai, he wasn't even the first non-japanese guy to do so either though he was the first white guy. William Adams story is also the loose basis for the game Nioh.

      Neat. I legitimately didn't know about that, nor about him being the basis for Nioh. You'd think as a history guy I would have known that one, but I guess I'm more interested in events than persons.
      Also, non-English people might not get this but to me it's perfectly understandable that someone from Gillingham would happily travel half-way across the world and become a Samurai rather than continue living there.

      It is one of those moments where history is just hella unrealistic. The other guy i mentioned is even more so.

      Wouldn't have gotten this if it wasn't for Rasmus' comment. Fascinating piece of history; I always thought the "European samurai" thing was a bit mythological. Turns out being weeaboo is a fine and established tradition.

      He only replaces Mitsurugi in certain versions of the game, so it's entirely possible to outright miss him. Definitely something of an oddity though.

      You need to download and use Pugsy's Cheats for Mame; they're otherwise time-released and take too long to unlock otherwise.

    Then, Arthur wanted a new job; Koei Tecmo hired him and Nioh was born!

    I may not be the only one here, but he essentially reminds me of Paul Phoenix from Tekken. His Soul Calibur III appearance makes it quite more apparent. And speaking of SCIII, even if we're not yet there, how about I let you see this video?

      Now the "Tekken 5 moves in SoulCalibur III" thing I actually did know; both came out in 2005 on PS2 of course, so I was playing both quite a bit at the time and noticing things like that, given that for the created movesets they were pretty apparent to me. Still quite interesting though; does explain how Namco was able to shove so many unique styles into a game so quickly, but SCIII is big on variety so I wouldn't exactly call it a bad thing.

    I was hopin' you'd be focusin' on the Dreamcast port. There I can share my experiences :u
    Anyway, whaddya think of Yoshi in SCVI?

    • @AdmiralMcFish
      @AdmiralMcFish  6 років тому +2

      Dreamcast port will be soon. As in, like, tomorrow.
      Yoshi looks pretty awesome in SCVI. Would be pretty weird to not have him included by this point, so I'm not only glad that he got added but that they actually took the time to give him a brilliant design too.

    Ah I didn't think you were e going to cover him, I forgot how thorough you are when covering these series.
    off topic question. Recently modders have found a way to turn on the boss flags for the Mishima's and Akuna,will you revisit tk7 to cover these characters?

    • @AdmiralMcFish
      @AdmiralMcFish  6 років тому +1

      Mind sending me a link to those mods? I'm certainly not against revisiting Tekken 7 if it's possible to cover them now, and I meant to return to it at some point anyway to cover Geese and Noctis.

      There is a youtube channel called Shadowrunner2730 there yoy will find videos showcasing the characters and some contact info.
      Maybe you can convince him it seems he did share the mod with The Mainmanswe so he could combo video.

      Nah, no dice, guy doesn't seem interested in sharing it with me. Good to know I still have literally no influence after all these years; I can't wait to finish this stuff next year and move on from this excuse of a hobby.

    Ultra-Fanatics of Specific Countries: We unnecessarily use some of the country's words in conversations and we boldly claim to know the culture.
    Arthur: I liked Japan so much I correctly wore samurai armor and properly used a katana against warriors around the world.
    Insert generic "a weeb before it was cool" sort of punchline here.

    If Soul Calibur gets ported in Korea, they have to Censor Mitsurugi for a One-Eyed White Samurai.

    Which version of SC is this and which emulator are you using? It looks and plays great. The one I have has several graphical glitches and issues.

      This would be "World, SOC14/VER. C" version, it's the default one on MameUI.
      And the emulator I used is MameUI; search it via google to find the latest version, it's updated quite regularly.
