One of the greatest interpretations.... unbelievably musical and poetic!

The quality of atistry speaks for itself and in my opinion this is the most exciting early recording of the Chopin e-minor that has ever been played and recorded.
So much pureness of emotion, power and silky and smooth passages of sheer beauty combined with the right tempi. She somehow manages to reach to point of sadness and melancholy and sincerley shines through with sparkles of hope and lightfullness. So many pianists just manage to depict the obvious sad and almost mad concept of Chopin, that of course is ever present but only a few have ever found the sparkles of Joy around it. Those few masters have come to the conclusion that this kind of mindfullness and sad feelings are not leading directly into depression and desperation and were not meant to be seen as that from the composer. Quite the contrary: Those who discovered his music purely have found out that there is an aura of slight but assured hope around those chords and passages and a life affirming quality. Melancholy sometimes leads into the opposite direction. Chopin was aware of that in this concerto and Ney, Arrau to some degree or even Argerich in more recent times have reached that level of consciousness.

I cannot thank you enough for giving us this complete performance of the first Chopin concerto here, and of the F minor concerto in your other posting. Genuine treasures, thank you!

Hi! Thanks again for your wonderful channel and all these invaluable rarities of the great Elly Ney you share with us. If you ever have in your collection the Gluck-Brahms Gavotte played by her I would be very grateful if you can upload it. All best wishes from Greece

Wonderful performance, but the dynamic de-compression and noise reduction applied is a bit too excessive.

True.... you'd better not know how terrible the first movement sounded. Ney's daughter Eleonore had the shellacs digitalized and gave copies to her friends and to Melisma Records. There, additional stereo effect was added but the result still was not pleasing. It sounded like a recording from 1900 without any trebles. Mr. Mühlbauer, the boss of Melisma, and I sent discs back and forth in order to achieve best results. My aim was to make the sound "broader" by expanding the artificial stereo effect and deleting obsolete bass frequencies. The result is okay, I think. The second movement is indeed pretty much filtered as there were tons of scatches. The third movement was in a pretty good state with the ending being an exception. Unfortunately, Mühlbauer died and only a few CDs were sold. Melisma ceased to exist and I had the best sounding versions in my studio with the intention of reissueing the Chopin concertos again some time later.
