I just bought these and installed them with the battery in the volume/tone compartment. I didn't like how everything is stuffed in there so I just routed out a battery compartment in the back and drilled a hole for the battery cable. I would highly suggest doing the same. These pickups sound amazing I must say.
Ciao Ed! Very nice and useful explanation on the way EMG designs and manufactures their pickups, and, as usual, very nice playing with precise testing of the gear in every tone combination. Thank you... thanks to this and to what I heard with my own hear (here and elsewhere of course) I've bought a set of EMG X PA for my PB-70 precision bass!
After spanning between 5 and 6 string basses the last 20 sum years, its back to a 4 string jazz for me. Being a bargin hunter, the squier 40 anniversary jazz in white and gold got the nod. Now the pups. I think you showing us the install on top of the tone did it for me! Thanks
2:51EMG's stack coil is just for "Tone Modeling", not for noise reduction. EMG pickups have less coil windings, so they have less impedance(=power and noise), instead the output is increased by "Internal Preamp". Low impedance does not attract noise. Their ordinary black pick-up covers are conductive, same as shielding the pickup cavities. White EMG is shielded inside the cover so a bit more price. The low output means the magnetic force is weak, so even if the pickups are closer to the strings than usual, it has the advantage of not interfering with the string vibrations.
@88fanforlife - Yes! It IS the only thing I know how to play. Luckily, I've been able to make a living as a bass player for 32 years playing that ONE lick, over and over, it's amazing!
Nice video! Was looking but did you really get the tone control wire right? In the manual it said that one of the wires should be attached the other way around? Look at about 7 minutes.
If you type EMG bass pickups on a utube search this comes up first. Ed has the best reviews by far on utube but it seems that this one has taken on a life of it's own because of the JVX overdub. At first I though it was a parody of hipster media delivery.
JAY VEE EKS - very funny, I admit. But I don’t know what it’s like to do voiceover work, so I’m not familiar with matching the acoustics/condition of the original recording space, to where the overdubs are being done. If anyone sees this, could they help me out with that, I’ve always wondered? Thanks!
I'm no fan of solderless connections. If you have a crappy $5 iron from Radioshack, just take the time to learn to solder correctly, and solder it. If you can get a good connection, no amount of regular use can disconnect it. One of the few times I have ever gigged I had a bit too much to drink, and I dropped my Jazz, and I had a cold (bad) connection to the jack, and I couldn't get it to work fast enough, so I had to switch basses for the night. Solderless is even weaker than a cold connection.
@RadioMasterDude pretty much all Fender basses are passive, you can make it active with any type of pickup that EMG has that matches your set-up, you just have to find a place for the 9volt battery like he did in this video. -hope that helps :)
i'm not too thrilled about the battery, practically looking at it. with change of battery you have to unscrew the pod plate off??...hmmm...neh Love the sound though!
Depends on what tone, if you want a Mark King style boost the bottom end, for Marcus Miller boost mid/highs. Just play around until you find something that works that's the funnest part
So I’m changing my stock Fender Jazz Bridge. To a Babicz Bridge. But on these EMG Active Pick ups. There’s no ground wire to ground under the bridge. Is that normal?
you can always use a rechargeable battery and add a charge port, then get a 9 volt DC power supply from RadioShack (US) or Maplin (UK), that's what I do if I make a passive bass an active one, it makes for a really easy maintenance as you don't need to make a big ass hole with a router in the back of your bass, you can just wrap the battery in the "SNUGGIE" supplied in the kit and charge when flat or still use the guitar with a dead battery, and also, for more reliability, add a toggle switch and 2 batteries as a failsafe in case one goes dead on ya in the middle if a set! (depends on the electrics cavity size though!!)
It's simple... The closer the pickup = more volume/less tone. The further away the pickup = more tone/less volume. If you get the pickups too close to the strings, they'll start to affect the strings and make very weird sounds and stop the string from vibrating properly as well.
You gotta remember his Jazz bass used to be passive before he replaced the stock pickups with the EMGs. I don't think there are any separate battery compartments for passive Jazz basses... Gotta make do with what you have. :-/ But hey, it sounds GREAT so no complaints there!
Hi Ed, Quick question - during your installation section, I noticed that there is no easy access battery compartment. Would one need to open up the pots compartment each time the battery dies? Thanks. Killer tone too.
Hey there Ed! I was wondering how much you knew about Ampeg amps. I am invested into a rig with a SVT-5PRO (which ampeg does not seem to make anymore) with a Pro Neo 4x10 Cab and a BXT 1x15. I also had the option of buying a SVT 8x10 heritage series, would you regard the Pro Neo and BXT combo of higher quality then the SVT-810 cab? they came out to the same price for me
Yeah, there's a massive difference between active bass and active pickups, you can have a passive bass with active pickups. I wouldn't use EMG's for recording though mind...
Im looking to get a fender blacktop jazz bass and I want to switch out the pickups with some active emg's, Which one's are recommended/ or would work with this bass?
when the battery is dying the guitar or bass will start to distort even on clean sound. you will hear this few gigs from battery dying. always carry a spare battery
@solidthunder92 You must be trolling or are crazy. I went through it slowly and no Alien Autopsy appeared, HOWEVER. I did see an autopsy on the guitar when he is installing the EMG JVX, that was pretty intense and subliminal... =I
If anyone is here 13 years later and has the same question, I installed the JVX pickups in my 2007 Squier Jazz Bass Standard, and have had them for almost a year now. They originally didn't fit, so I had to take it to the luthier to widen the bridge pickup cavity. Totally worth the trouble to install these bad boys, though. Made my Squier sound like a million bucks.
so the brand new "JAY VEE ECKS"
Yeah it's all right, you got away with it, nobody noticed the JVX voice over
LOL !!! I did
It’s almost March 2021 and I’m still gagging laughing at JVX hahaha

hahahhahah I'm here for the overdub!
"this month we're looking at emg's brand new YAY BE EXXXX! jazz bass pickups"

2018! Jay vee ecks still going strong!

the overdubbed "JVX" makes me lol everytime
THE JAY VEE EX overdub still makes me lmao
ok... i took note of:
JAY VEE ECKS
SNUGGIE
and...
NO ROOM FOR SNUGGIE :(
I came to hear a sound sample but I stayed for the Jay Vee Ecks.
Ed Friedland's pocket, aw man!
Please make a comparative video of pickup replacement options for Fender Jazz Bass
@88fanforlife - Yes! It IS the only thing I know how to play. Luckily, I've been able to make a living as a bass player for 32 years playing that ONE lick, over and over, it's amazing!
This next song is called JAY VEE ECKS
Nice video! Was looking but did you really get the tone control wire right? In the manual it said that one of the wires should be attached the other way around? Look at about 7 minutes.
I love these pickups. So clear , bright and thick. I'm going to be so 💔if they don't make a 5 string version.

Love this Overdub

I love those JXVs!!!!!
do you like passive or active more? awesome review man! love your reviews really detailed...
The "Miller Beer" sign . . ( ha ha ha ) that's awesome.
Thanks for this lead on these pickups. Great demo
After 10 years this is still funny

Love your video Ed. Keep up the good work
How is the string to string balance? Not to loud outer (G&E) strings the common jazz bass way?
Still my #1 Ed Vid of all time… Jay Vee Ekssssss
ED!!! what type of Bass brand and model is your absolute Fav!!??
i'm not too thrilled about the battery, practically looking at it.
with change of battery you have to unscrew the pod plate off??...hmmm...neh
Love the sound though!

Just bought a set cause of this video!
Any lipreaders out there? Looks like he was saying JXV, rather than JVX.
Great review!
So where does the battery fit? If you shoehorn it in, how easy is it to change?
just as easy as it would be to put in. depending on how you did it, you'd probably end up taking the pickguard and/or control plate off.
Jacob Robinson Seems like a lot of hassle when you get hit with a flat battery mid gig, just sayin
oh I completely agree with you there. it'd be a nightmare :P

The Alien autopsy bit freaked the hell out of me, wasn't expecting that...
What's with the JVX overdub?
Hi Ed,
Quick question - during your installation section, I noticed that there is no easy access battery compartment. Would one need to open up the pots compartment each time the battery dies?
Thanks. Killer tone too.
Can anybody tell me please, What happens to the ground wire?
Loved the alien autopsy part :)
Great sounding pickups, and bass.

hi Ed. Im just curious what kind of strings are you using on your jazz bass with the JVX pickups
These pickups are terrific
I love them =D
Hey Ed, you ever put these JVX on a Warwick Corvette, or happened to have heard a corvette with this? really interested in them.
I think maybe this was a pre-release review and they changed the name to JVX afterwards and prior to releasing, thus the overdub.
... this month we're looking at EMG's new "JVX!!!!" pickups
Yeah, there's a massive difference between active bass and active pickups, you can have a passive bass with active pickups. I wouldn't use EMG's for recording though mind...
cant get that line out of my head god dammit!!!!!
I love this sound.
Honestly surprised at how good the tone is on these guys.
No, there aren't separate battery compartments in passive instruments. Guess I wasn't aware it was a passive instrument.
I haven't heard a better overdub since the time Hendrix walked the earth.
I would like to see a before and after next time.
So you can use a passive bass with those active pickups? sounds weird to me
Can't see these any more in EMG's lineup. Or are the JXs the same?
LMFAO this is my first time seeing this video wtf why did they do that voice over thing every damn time hahahaha
+slinkybalz9 jesus christ this is the most ridiculous video ive ever seen if i had been high that alien part would have scared the fuck out of me!
He was probably saying it wrong so they had to correct him.
Im looking to get a fender blacktop jazz bass and I want to switch out the pickups with some active emg's, Which one's are recommended/ or would work with this bass?
so both pickups operate on one battery to power them both?
Pretty muJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXch bro.
@solidthunder92 There is no transition at 2:00 though. The only transition I see is the one at 2:17
I totally agree with you MattyBassK.
@ChucklesMginty that shit was hilarious
i love it when he closes his eyes lol
@RadioMasterDude absolutely!
lmao whats with the JVX overdub. its kinda funny lol
so these are active ? my jazz bass is currently passive can i still use these pickups ?
Great review! Ok that ET thing was weird...
whats with the voice overs?
Dig the tone!
pretty nice sound
J V X still got me
Seems a bit unpractical that there isn't a separate battery compartment. Still, great sounding pickups.
did they have for a 5 string ?
JVX's sound like babes
deep in the funk
how long does it takes to drain the battery?
much the same as a battery on a boss tuner pedal. as long as its unplugged when not in use. about 4-5 months if you gig alot
when the battery is dying the guitar or bass will start to distort even on clean sound. you will hear this few gigs from battery dying. always carry a spare battery
Why I always go with passive pickups ;)
These sound a bit darker than other EMG J style pickups. Hmm
is this an Active Pickup?
SUM16KWT Yes
@solidthunder92 You must be trolling or are crazy. I went through it slowly and no Alien Autopsy appeared, HOWEVER. I did see an autopsy on the guitar when he is installing the EMG JVX, that was pretty intense and subliminal... =I
@bubbleicious111 It looks like a RoadWorn model possibly??
the new JVX!,the JVX! uses,EMG's brand new JVX!!!!
You mean now? Now they're active. You can see his batteries at 7.11".
Do these fit in a Squier Jazz Bass Standard?
If anyone is here 13 years later and has the same question, I installed the JVX pickups in my 2007 Squier Jazz Bass Standard, and have had them for almost a year now. They originally didn't fit, so I had to take it to the luthier to widen the bridge pickup cavity. Totally worth the trouble to install these bad boys, though. This fits into MIM Fender Jazz???
is it squier bass?
Press 9 for nice slide!
Sry had to post this xP
the only thing i don't like about the jazz bass is that it needs more frets. atleast 22
Will they fit into a P-Bass?
thats a nice song at the background at around 6minute mark onwards, does anyone know the name of the song? I sounds likeRosenberg. thanks :)
what strings were those?
super brzmienie,klasyka.
