For the firt time ever, I have pre - ordered a camera: two, in fact. I will be part exchanging my EM1X and EM1 mark III for 2 x OM 1 bodies. The faster, more accurate AF and new EVF and raft of updates have sold me. Having watched Chris and Jordan from DP Review actually play with a pre - production model, I'm convinced the OM 1 will be spot on for me. And I used to own an original OM1 in 1975.

Agree - My dear old Dad bought me my first camera an OM1 many many years ago - both he and that camera are long gone but I have pre-ordered and I think I may try and find an original.

It’s great to see Olympus bounce back. My first camera was an OM-1 back in 1974 and I still have it and sometimes use it. Their 35mm OM-x line was legendary and I’ve used them also professionally until digital kicked in. The Zuiko optics are always amongst the best and the build quality is second to only one (Leica claims an IP54 for their SLs). Kudo’s for OM Systems to take this leap forward. I’m tempted to get in again…

I recently discover the OMD EM1 III and the 300mm f4, and now this! I think im getting inlove with the M4/3. This camera is perfect for almost everyones needs! Sadly i still cannot aford any of those 2, hopefully some day! Great video Mr Gordon, as always.

After many years with Canon and Nikon doing wildlife have not once thought about Olympus and now I can't stop watching reviews about this camera totally hooked on all the features. Seems like it's amazing perfect for lightweight bird photography with the 2x MFT extra reach. The 300mm f4 seems like a good lens to go with it. Like having a 600mm F4 or 840mm with the converter. That pro capture will also boost my chances with the birds. 🙂
Olympus is the pioneer of camera technology, the quality is great but marketing is low unlike the Sony. Among all the brands, I like olympus camera best. The function and image output is quite adqute to use. Unfortunately the market likes the boasting pixles , larger censor size, and ultimate Iso more than they needed, and not considering photography is a pleasure, if you can pay less money, carry lighter full set of equipments, and more simplified functions, with these you can concentrate to photography itself and make better photos with creativity and your own style, and all these can be done by using olympus. Thank you, Olympus, with my deepest respect.

Menu system is a serious improvment over older Olympus cameras along with much needed sensor upgrade.
But if they wanted to I am sure that could be a firmware update for the older models.
OM Systems still giving the 2.5 year registered warranty even for a lowly E-PL10 I have just purchased which was a pleasant surprise. That is a bonus factor worth thinking about compared to other make cameras I have bought with just one year which goes quickly.
I am so excited by this camera. I’d buy it for the Olympus OM-1 tribute alone. It does more than I’ll ever need it to do and more than anything, provides the joy I’ve only ever been able to achieve with M43 cameras after trying every format from medium to full frame to APSC. Very happy with the potential of this new camera.
I'm still perfectly happy with my E-M1 II and E-M5 III, so I'll stick with these for the forseeable future (or perhaps rather spend my money on a new lens rather then jumping on this new OM-1 camera). However, If we were to see this new sensor and processor trickle down an upgraded version of say the E-M5, I'd probably be tempted to upgrade, as I absolutely love my E-M5 III as it stands.

For the most part YES!! Robust, reliable, take anywhere and compact. Picture quality has always been surprisingly good, new BSI sensor looks strong and fast. Can't wait for the full review.
It's so good to hear not just the improvements of the sensor but the Auto Focus. I look forward to the possibility of 50 fps with Autofocus. Honestly for me 20-30 is the most unusual I ever want even with birds in flight and sports action but to know that it will auto focus is huge to me. Look forward seeing how good it is.
I love it so far. Of course I've only read about the basics. At this price it's excellent value, for sure. I thought it would be more. I'm so glad it has two back buttons, one just for AF.
Good news for all of us who love shooting with the compact and feature rich m4/3 system. The doom -mongers who have been predicting the demise of the system regularly over the past few years are starting to look very silly. I wont be upgrading my Em1 mkiii, but like the looks of the F4 40-150mm. For videographers and youtube content creators OM sys and Panasonic GH make a lot of sense at a competitive price.
Yes...rugged adventure camera is the way to go for traveling. Panasonic bring new GH6 in cpl of weeks...MFT is not going anywhere.
Although M4/3rd is not an option for me, i’m happy to see Olympus sticking to their guns producing this new camera that will undoubtably make many people happy, especially on the video side of things. Great honest and detailed review as always Gordon. Looking forward for the next one, as i am very curious to see real world stills tests, especially in low light where my experience with M 4/3rd really revealed that format’s limits. I've been looking at a new camera system after years away from photography. I've been thinking about full frame DLSR's for wildlife and landscape... however the more I've watched on this little gem, the more impressed I am.
It's a great camera with some really good lenses
This camera and the Panasonic 10 - 25 f1.7 are the dream combination for me as a social media hybrid shooter.
The 20 to 50mm full frame range is perfect for me and f3.5 happens to be my most used fstop.
The idea of not swapping lens with class leading stabalisation is very exciting.

I also second your thoughts on the branding. Almost 'moving' to see the Olympus name here, and re-use of the iconic OM-1 model name. It instantly resonates with a generation of photographers (thats older gen', like me!).
I think it would benefit both Olympus Corporation and OM Digital Solutions to keep this heritage going on into the future, keeping the company name alive on cameras, and using the OM model name anew for another half century.
The relaunch of MFT will DOA if they think people are going to buy at this absurd pricing. This is more expensive than every APS-C camera on the market and there are even a handful of less expensive full frame cameras cheaper than this.

@@IvoTichelaar Never said that. Ive shot all the format sizes and I actually sold my full frame cameras recently and went back to APS-C for various reasons. However, how big is the market for a $2,200 M43 camera from Olympus? Quite minuscule indeed. The M1X was already overpriced at $1700 and that was a huge failure sales-wise. You really think this thing at $2,200 is going to get people all excited for M43? lol
@@IvoTichelaar Well not but this attitude is helped by reviewers who seem to be anal about it. Like anyone would notice the tiny bump to 24 MP at all. Even Goron, without any proof, states the sensor is the most significant upgrade in the cam. Right...
@@michaelbell75 get your facts straight. The EM1X costed close to 3000$ when it was launched. You also seem to forget that the prices of cams have gone up regardless of the brand and in line with worldwide pricing of many devices. I payed 2000 euro for my EM1.2 and that was at the start of dec 2016. Hardly a difference with the $2200 asked right now. If the cams does deliver, also significantly better IQ based on the sensor, given the much better AF and handheld Hires my Em1.2 lacks I would buy this one and may be sell the GH4 (still worth 400 dollar or so). Because what you fail to realise is that for quite a few thjey buy a system, not just bodies. So I have so many mFT lenses that switching (which i have no need for anyways) would be much more costly than just swapping the body of course.
Are you planning to have a full review of this camera? It would be interesting to see how the autofocus of this camera performs in comparison with others.

The OM-1 has essentially all of the updates that I was hoping for in the EM1-MKIII. I have one on preorder.
I'm honestly thinking about picking one up for the OM-1 Olympus branding alone. I would use it as a lightweight f/4 landscape setup for backpacking trips where I lugging my R5 and RF isn't very pleasant. The excellent weather sealing backed by a true rating instills complete confidence in its ability to survive the elements. Great job!

I've been an Olympus shooter since buying the E-1 during its closeout sale. I now have an E-5, which I use as my primary camera. I have followed the Micro 4:3 line since the announcement of the EM-1MkII and felt I could enjoy the EM-1 MkIII as a replacement. I'm not a professional and switching to Micro 4:3 would mean a full system switch, since my equipment is no longer supported. The cost has been an obstacle.
This new OM-1 is the camera that I would be satisfied with and would fulfill the needs I have for all the photography I do now and want to do, in the future. Zuiko remains the best combination of lens designs, quality and price, in my opinion. To do everything I would like will take a substantial investment over time, but I'd like to do it. I also really like the tribute branding for this camera and I think it will resonate with a large share of OM Systems buyers, who I expect are older folks like me.
You can buy an adapter and use all your 4/3 lenses
@@gonzalolaurie8243 true, but my twenty year old lenses would negate much of the performance and features the OM-1 was designed to offer. Better to buy the new lenses.
If the claimed improvements to Dynamic range and noise levels hold true, then this may be the ultimate crop sensor stills camera. The previous sensor was already very competitive with the best APS-C sensors from Canon, Sony, and Nikon.

@@melgross I'm not and never have been an Olympus user. I'm mainly basing that conclusion based on the testing of DXOMARK. Olympus' cameras certainly never outright beat APS-C cameras (of similar age and market segment) from the bigger brands, but it gets astonishingly similar results despite the 25-33% difference in sensor size.
Of course Olmypus cameras are also more expensive, so whilst impressive technologically the value isn't super compelling. That is mainly what's kept me away from the brand and MFT in general.
I'd link a comparison but that just gets my comment deleted. Still though look at the EM-1 Mark ii vs the Sony 6300 or the 80D (DXOMARK hasn't tested the 90D) or the Nikon D7200 and you'll see what I mean.
Regardless of any of that... a BSI stacked sensor is naturally going to wipe the floor with the current market of APS-C sensors. If just because the FF brands have no incentive to put in the same R&D investment with their own smaller sensor formats.
The only thing that I think one might have expected is a few more megapixels other than that it seems like a great upgrade to me. Improved autofocus, it's what was really needed, and it seems that they have delivered. More speed, better menus, huge viewfinder upgrade.

amount of pixels is such an annoying marketing strategy. image quality is much more complicated than simply the amount of pixels. just today I did a practical test with my 64 mp phone camera versus my em-5 16 mega pixels with 3200 iso. despite the phone camera having 4 times more pixels, it looked 10 times worse.
I also owned an em-10 before my em-5 with a sensor that also had 16 megapixels, and the video quality was so much better. I only use this example because it was quite a leap in quality.
so....I personally think ISO performance, color, dynamic range and image processing "magic" are much more important than those few pixels...I also heard that cramming so many pixels in a small space with current technology affects dynamic range.
Good to see m43 is still alive.
I love this new camera, but for me I am waiting to take a look at the GH6 before making final decisions.
Thanks for the fantastic (p)review! The sensor / processor / viewfinder / display / weathersealing all look to be worthy upgrades. Pity that the previous BLH-1 batteries aren't still useable in this body (even if only as an emergency backup).

The grid/shutter buttons design looks like a nice mix of the Canon and Nikon styles: smooth curves with the dial below the shutter press button.

I'm seriously tempted here. I may have to trade in some of my old kit but don't see myself parting with my EM1ii even if I do take the leap. However, I'll wait until the hype and the market settles down, as I did with the EM1ii. I'll be keeping a close eye on this one that's for sure.

This looks like the perfect camera/lens setup for me! I always want my Sony to have better weather sealing, better ibis, smaller and cheaper lenses. This camera with the two new weather-sealed lenses would be such an incredible value if they perform as well as they sound!

Olympus cameras have always had good colors sooc. Hopefully OM digital keeps developing this camera system.
Was hoping for a few more computational tricks. Having hedged between Olympus and Fuji for the past 10 years, I know I prefer this size camera and lens combo. If they can pack in some smartphone photography tricks to boost low light situations, M43 would be it for me!

Incredible how Olympus insists in stay behind in video… Now I need to decide if I will buy body only for 2199€, or 2799€ with the 12-40ii (only 600€ extra for the lens - I could sell my 8 years old 12-35mm f2.8), both with extra 1 battery and 5 years Garantie.

From a collectable standpoint, this thing could be a good investment. Speaking of that. I purchased an Em1 Mkii 4 years ago. I got the camera body, the battery grip, and a 12-40mm F2.8 pro lens and an extra battery. It cost me around $3000.00. Go price that exact kit on B&H today. It's $3000.00. Yes, you can still get the Mkii. This stuff is a good investment. This camera will probably do well.
A good objective review as ever Gordon. On a personal level I played with Micro 2/3rds with a Lumix G7 and G80 a few years back and whilst compactness is a big bonus with the format especially for travel, when I came to realise that for best results you needed to spend heavily on the 'top end' Lumix or Olympus lenses which cost the same as the 'big boys' Canon, Nikon, Sony ones, I decided to bail on the system.
This looks an excellently specified bit of kit and whilst delighted to see them alive and kicking I do wonder given the availability of so many full frame cameras at a similar price point and the lenses the same, whether price will be their problem but, I certainly wish them well.
M43 can only survive if they can outspec FF on extra features like 4k@60fps video and 30 FPS shooting stills with continuous AF. Most FF at this price point cannot do this as they are limited with heavy crop with video, small buffer and slow FPS with C-AF. As you said the big problem is that you need to buy fast professional lenses to achieve good result under low light and fast moving objects.
I want one! Seriously though the new sensor has plenty of resolution for my uses and I am looking forward to the increased usefulness of the silent shutter mode now that the sensor readout is so much faster.
Makes me wonder if Olympus will be THE crop sensor camera to get since they have a good amount of lenses compared to Nikon, Canon and Sony's APS-C lens offerings.
Gonna wait for the Pen-F update personally.

i wasnt expecting this, but its quite compelling.
I am really disappointed it hasn't got a GPS. The only thing I wanted to see improved was the viewfinder resolution..which they've done. I don't care about 8K, frame rates , higher sensor res. Why couldn't they add a GPS like the EMX?? A camera like this - for hiking & mountaineering - cries out for one. Smartphones don't do well in those environments. At least there's the option of a separate GPS unit then matching afterwards, but it's nice to have in camera.
Seems that not even Canon does integrate a GPS anymore in a camera.

Totally agree. This was one of the biggest attractions of the E-M1X for me, and a strong reason why I bought it and love it now. I don’t understand why camera makers don’t seem to appreciate how useful it is.
@@RichardHallas I was so disappointed about this that I put the comment anywhere I could find! Apparently there were reasons from Olympus (Cris Eyre Walkers' reply to me) but they didn't seem that convincing. There are two options that suit me:
For real time tagging, a dedicated mini smartphone with removable battery &/or long life (eg Samsung Xcover, Unihertz Atom L).
For tagging via software (eg robogeo) a dedicated GPS to record a log, then match later.
Either way it's a faff. The only thing that put me off the EMX was the viewfinder resolution.

I was expecting a retro-review of my beloved, presumably 49 year old, OM-1! I guess I'm showing my age. In those days the frame rate was dependent on the speed of your thumb and the batteries lasted for MONTHS, if not years. Alas, my old lenses certainly won't be compatible, otherwise I might be tempted. What about an OM-1 to OM-1 converter???
I have a secondhand OM1 upstairs with a little dent in the corner of the top plate. Still works. Got it on Ebay 20 years ago. The mechanical shutter sound is almost divine.
Batteries in an old OM1 lasted almost indefinitely with the fully mechanical shutter.👍They really just powered the meter, didn't they? Even on the OM2 with all it's 1975 high tech, they lasted many months if you kept the off switch off in storage. Then came the OM3 and OM4 with staggeringly no "off"switch position and battery drain was an issue. An incredible oversight in two cameras that were promised for years and came on the market very late. I think that did for Olympus in the mid 80s to 90s. I was quite amazed when the OMD series came out this century with the original OM1/2 type styling and frankly, I couldn't wait to get one - but I had to! I now have EM10 Mark iis chrome and black that are uncannily 1970s Olympus-ish in feel and look. Very like the OM10 that I had in 1981 - but much more high tech. Would love a used EM1 Mark ii. Had a disappointment with an original used EM1 recently that I sent back. I also discovered that the EM10s and EM5s are far closer to the original OM design than the EM1 that feels more DSLR like with the big hand grip but still felt and looked awesome in concept.

I’ve not got round to it yet but so tempted to px my R7 for the om-1 and prob px the rf 100-500 for the Olympus 300 mm f4 with a 1.4x as hear they work well together and then get one of the wider pro lenses for landscapes love the stacked sensors no rolling shutter the live nd ability and the fact you can handhold long waterfall exposures no need for tripod or need of nd filters makes this such a tempting kit also I was recently looking at something like the Fuji x100v or the Leica d lux 7 for a holiday camera but I think I’ll scrap that and just put that towards another lens for the om-1 then hopefully next year try get the Olympus 150-400 f4.5 with the built in teleconverter.
I’m not looking at getting shut of the R6 yet with all the wide L lenses but you never know if the Olympus delivers then I may go Olympus all the way decisions decisions

Always enjoy your reviews! Not quite related; but what’s your usual camera choice when heading out on your hikes? As I recall the A6400 is your go to studio cam, but for mountain journeys (if not going super light)?
Thanks! Generally I take whatever I'm reviewing nowadays in order to spend more time with it, but I do prefer smaller, lighter systems for travel. Thinking of an X100V or similar for my next trip, but it'll be hard to give up interchangeable lenses!
Bought the canon r6 to replace my old eos 600D. Its my second camera and I have never taken this many photos before. Just the ease of use and speed are amazing. Focus systems and dynamic range in new cameras is insane. That I can lower the exposure to shoot with lower iso and still have all that information in editing is very forgiving.

so many reviewers got their hands in advance on this camera, yet hardly any footage/photos shot with it so that we can see the actual quality and more importanly how good af is in video. is there some embargo on the camera, and if so, until when?
No embargo for me, just v limited time with it so far.
I know that a lot of people think this doesn't matter that much, and in many ways I agree but I would like to see a 43 megapixel om systems camera. I am very happy with my 20 megapixel E-M1 iii. If an OM-1X (E-M1X ii) came out with 40+ megapixel, I would be willing to spend $3000+ for it. That being said, I think this is where OM needs to go. If they want to become one of the most sought after nature wildlife cameras, they will do 3 things to compete with Sony/Canon/Nikon: 1) Keep the similar performance to OM-1 (maybe 24 frames per second would suffice), 2) bump the megapixels to compete with the R5, and 3) put a big emphasis on video features. Look, I am extremely happy with what I have, but I want my investment to keep winning financially, and imagine how many people would prefer the lightweight portability of micro 4/3, but the detail and flexibility of having larger files for cropping, and higher res video and/or more video fidelity: i think this is the winning formula for OM, and micro 4/3 as a whole
I think that would only be practical with a new, more efficient sensor technology, as packing that many pixels onto the M43 area today would really impact noise at high ISOs, dynamic range, as well as placing great resolution demands on lenses.
@@cameralabs I agree! But I woul like to see a BSI and stacked 24mp, showing some development in this area. Anyway I’m very happy with my 20mp OM-1!

I'd love to see a deeper dive into the video specs simerlarly to how you reviewed the GH6, a direct comparison along with a side by side autofocus test and OIS test.

I'm hoping to make the OM-1 or GH6 my next camera and as a photographer and videographer a light camera with excellent OIS and good video capabilities is a must! If the OM-1 is as good as I hope it is, it'll be the one.

When will you do a full review? I'm interested to see the image quality for video in all modes: 1080p, UHD, DCI 4K.
OM Systems don't seem in any hurry to get me a review sample, and the longer it takes, the less justification there'll be to make an in-depth video about it due to reduced views. The only way I can deal with this is to move to a Patreon model which would allow me to move away from having to rely on YT revenue alone which is purely based on views. So the question is, would you be willing to join a Patreon to support my work?
Terrific review Gordon. Ypu hit the improvements on this new OM System OM-1 camera. I think as this company moves forward they will continue to improve their cameras and lenses. Of course the camera market is so competitive, and there are so few photograophers left shooting cameras and more and more people shooting with their phones, will there be enough customers/photographers to support all the investment necessary for R & D ? Beautiful camera. Great feature set. Finally an Olympus with competitive video features. But that price... Nearly as much as an A7 IV...
This has nothing in common with an A7 IV and it's at least 200 USD cheaper. So what's your point?
It very much depends on the market. Here in Europe OM-1 is good 30% cheaper than A7 IV.
@@EatInTaiwan By being only 10% smaller, lighter, and cheaper than rivals with four-times the sensor size, it is not leveraging the advantages of the M43 ecosystem.
This from a M43 proponent. Believe this will largely sell to those with an existing collection of M43 lenses. At this price, can't see it luring many new photographers or videographers to M43.
@@Trevellian the sensor is smaller but it offers much more than similar priced FF cameras. Sensor size is one factor, but definitely not the only one reason to choose a camera over another
@@EatInTaiwan Yes, it has a few features that aren't in the A7 IV. But equaly, the A7 IV has features this doesn't.
Smaller lenses? Yes. Especially telephoto. But cheaper lenses? Not really.
Have both M43 and e-mount cameras, lens prices are about the same. Love my M43 body for its great portability. But this camera doesn't play to the M43 size advantage, a shame.
