    Theater isn't about making the actual words stupid and irrelevant, theater is about showing what is there, what is written in a way to make people feel it.

    Scarpia is supposed to be scary, not a small town thug, but a guy in charge of secret police, someone with a huge power, the whole Rome is afraid of him. The music shows it, but the director's tricks work against the music. Of course some people today who don't want to learn anything about history, think everything is about sex and nothing else. Oh, and Tosca is verismo not Grand Opera. The directors ignore historical context, and words no longer make sense. I like the singer though.

    • @Altonahh10
      @Altonahh10 3 роки тому +3

      Of course it´s about sex. Scarpia wants Tosca for his own satisfaction, like he did before with other women. This scene has nothing to do with history, this is an opera, not a lecture in history. And besides all that, Saks as Scarpia is not ideally cast at all, when we just want to talk about his singing.

    • @jewelmarkess
      @jewelmarkess 3 роки тому +2

      @@Altonahh10 Sure, Scarpia wants Tosca for sex, but it's a lot more than that. As the chief of the secret police, he has unlimited power, and it is very relevant here. Besides, it's not just some 'concepts', the actual words matter, they are not random noise. Just because they are in a language you might not know doesn't mean the words can just be ignored. Cavaradossi is fighting for Italian independence btw, and it is also part of the opera.

      @@coraggio93 chief of police, Baron Scarpia, falls in love with Tosca, who loves the painter and pursued progressive Cavaradossi. He sings how he will make her suspicious and jealous regarding her lover and how he will capture him and her heart. "Tosca, you make me forget god!" is the climax of the scene, as Scorpia plans his intrigue during a mess in a church.

    This is a perfect voice (in spite of its defects) for this aria. But very far from puccinis intentions, although he would never advise anyone on how to sing or play his music. This production is too 20th century for my tastes. Do we really need to rehash all the manias of the previous century: the millenianism (throwing the bay out with bath water, attachments to supposed seats of power (technology, science, politics.) This is the kind of frivolous production that hampers true artistry.

      I think, his voice is very harsh, without enough power (he wouldn't be heard over the orchestra without a mic) and just ugly sounding. Not for Scarpia, not for Puccini.

    I think out of today's good Scarpias, Terfel is more menacing. Of course, Gobbi would eat both for breakfast, but that's like pitting Magneto against Toph in battle - he might be great but she would pwn him in 2 minutes.

    • @HereIsMyStuff35
      @HereIsMyStuff35 3 роки тому +1

      Terfel was a great thuggish Scarpia 13 years ago, when he first did Tosca. Since then his portrayal has evolved as he's aged and (I suppose) gained new insights into the character. Gobbi was OK, but frankly I prefer the more modern Scarpias.

    This scene is definately too gay. At first he has a had a good education but not hating women, he's hating all people.These are the points of his charakter. A lot of time singing calm and controlled in the second act. You can't get rid of these facts. A good voice,unfortunately in the middle range of the voice you hear an ugly throat dumpling, and ugly vibrato. In fact absolute unsexy. Because of these technical problems, I dont't believe his voice can sound over the orchestra without mic.

      Where do you get these insights into Scarpia? All that's known about him is that he's ruthless and lustful, untrustworthy and venal. Also, every production and performer does the staging differently. I quite like this Scarpia, and Gidon Saks
      is a great singer.
