Helen Forrest (1917 - 1999) was a leading band vocalist during the 1930s and 1940s, featured with Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and Harry James during their prime years. She had a strong but warm voice and interpreted lyrics sensitively. Early in her career she sang on Radio as "Bonnie Blue", The Blue Lady and sang with her brother's band in Washington D.C. She rose fast after joining Artie Shaw late in the summer of 1938 and then Benny Goodman in December 1939 after Shaw abruptly quit. In August 1941 she sang for Harry James and recorded such hits as "I Don't want to Walk Without You", "I Had the Craziest Dream", and "I've heard that Song Before." She appeared in several movie during the 1940s. Became a single in 1943 and played clubs and theatres. In late 1944 she teamed with singing star Dick Haymes on radio show which continued as popular series for several years. She remained active with recordings through the 1950s and 1960s and occasionally on TV. In her later years she worked clubs again.
A voice for the ages.
Okay youse guys, I got first dibbs on dancing with that angel , Helen Forrest , when I get to the other side !!!
Love the 40's big band music and the "birds" that sang with them. Helen Forrest was one of the best, and she lives forever!
Gorgeous in every way!
Wonderful.
Great voice and interpretation of this music by Helen Forrest! Brava Helen!!
Arranged by the incomparable Eddie Sauter; what a howcase for Helen Forrest's wonderful voice!
I love helen forrest voice, she is the best jazz singer in the 40s! Even Harry James, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, choose her to sing in their bands.
the magnificent Helen Forrest!
Beautiful voice and style. One of four Helens of her time; Helen Ward, Helen OConnell and Helen Morgan, all great vocalists. Thanks for the upload!
You forgot about Helen Ward! I'd say she was the best vocalist out of the bunch with Forrest cutting a close second, though honestly, they both had a very different style. Forrest was fairly gentle in her singing while Ward went all out
Those were the days such a beautiful era those Big Bands were and Helen Forrester had a wonderful voice. Thanks for posting this lovely video.
We sang this my freshman year in choir. Spring 1994. Great song.
A superb vocalist, what memories of a nicer time.
What's so nice about war!? Shame on you!
Yes, I totally agree with you, it was the best period for music but the war destroyed the beauty, the behaviour and clothing styles, of the time unfortunately.
TY for the upload, two sublime performers :-)
Quisiera haber vivido esos años
great!thanks for this one-longer arrangement than one i've heard before...just terrific!
Since this was a 12 inch record it has about 4 minutes per side.
This was recorded just before World War Two started; there is something about the music from this generation that has a special meaning for all of us; there is tenderness and thoughtfulness that shines through the lyrics; thank goodness someone took the time to preserve this legacy.

WW2 started 15 months earlier. That's the trouble with SOME Americans, you are so ignorant about what goes on outside the USA!
Wow I love Helen and never heard of this song! Thanks!
Yes indeed. Thanks for posting. Helen is probably my all-time favorite and this arrangement is so fantastic, This was truly the golden era of the Great American Songbook.
wonderful
a little salute by helen to her friend billie holiday in the last chorus from their days with artie shaw at blue room hotel lincoln
I have this exact 78 record. Since it is 4 minutes long, it was a 12 inch shellac. I don't dare play it on my record player as it will chew it up so fast.
I have a strong woman who keeps me on track! I need that!
Just samples this her vocals are so nice
I love this song and have never heard this recording. Thanks! Gary
good stuff
I got this song on a Columbia 78rpm.
Bea Wain was not one of the three Helens [perhaps I will add Helen Morgan to the list some day when I have listened to some of her old recordings]. Bea Wain does show up in the video part of the Benny Goodman, Helen Forrest (1940) presentation of More Than You Know; she is the comely woman whose picture shows up at about 2:10.
Thank you for sharing this great post. I love this song and have a Lena Horne recording of it.
Must also thank sessnazx for sending me this link.
Thanks for your comment. I have also posted a version of this song by Helen Morgan... a much different singing style.
Nice video and that gal had a great voice!
if you saw michelle pfeiffer in the fabulous baker boys, then you would remember this tune as well..
Benny’s solo is very very Artie
Too bad BG took advantage of the disbanding of Artie Shaw's band. According to sources he treat Helen very poorly with his arrangements.
She sang much better in her later years...this version almost sounds robotic.
