  • Pierre Seel was a teenager discovering young love when the Gestapo imprisoned him for being on a list of known gay men. He was subjected to violence and medical experimentation during six months at a Nazi camp. There he witnessed the brutal murder of his first love, a scene seared in his mind for the rest of his life.
When Pierre returned home, he was told not to speak of these experiences. Years later, his gravely ill mother finally said to him, "Tell me what they did to you." Watch our short Pride Month program to learn how Pierre shared his story in honor of the men who could not.

Dr. Edna Friedberg, Historian, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Thank you for bring this man’s story to life. I follow and watch every video that the museum produces, it is my way of honoring the holocaust’s victims. But, as this man’s story proves, I only know part of the suffering inflicted on the innocent victims of the holocaust.

Thank you for telling this story. It was an honour to act as a witness to it. Such cruelty is unfathomable.

To be young and in love and to have such evil destroy your dreams and take your life so viciously. It is so hard to practice forgiveness. How could so many wails to God go unheard? This breaks my heart as I lost my dear husband to cancer 2 years ago and he loved Mickey Mouse. His collection of figurines and ornaments sits gathering dust now. In honor of that love, I will think on Pierre and Joe and my own lost love forever now when I gaze upon Mickey.

This made me weep. The idea of watching the one man Ive ever loved be torn aoart by dogs is so horrific that I dont know how this man didnt completely break. May his memory be a blessing.

I cannot imagine what those people endured. I have often heard the lucky ones in the concentration, camp, or the ones who died. RIP.❤

Pierre's father had turned on him. We should add that to the statement about being betrayed.

What a truly horrible and angry place was Germany leading up to and during WWII. Rest well, Pierre.
