US Philippines Silver Peso 1903-1912

- SilverTorch66 presents: Introducing the U.S. Philippines Peso Silver Coin Series 1903 - 1912. These American minted coins made for the Philippine Islands are steeped in history in intrigue. There we actually two different varieties to this Philippine Peso set;
Variety 1 was minted from 1903 thru 1906
These coins were originally struck on Morgan Dollar planchets from either the Philadelphia or San Franciso Mints. The obverse, which was designed by the Philippine sculptor and artist Melecio Figueroa, sometimes referred to as the “Prince of Filipino Engravers.”
displays a young Filipina girl standing next to an anvil in a flowing dress resting a hammer held in her right hand atop an anvil, in her raised left arm she holds an olive branch. In the background is the Mt. Mayon volcano with billowing smoke emitting from its crater. Mt. Mayon is considered one the most active and dangerous volcanoes in the Philippines. It is well know for its almost perfect conical shape. Along the top edge you will find the inscription of the coins denomination “ONE PESO” and along the lower edge is the inscription “FILIPINAS”. Which is the name of the archipelago in Spanish.
The reverse displays the arms of the US Territories Shield, a broad winged eagle clutching an olive branch in its right claw and a bundle of arrows in its left, sitting atop a shield divided into two registers. The upper register has 13 stars, and the lower register has 13 vertical stripes. The date appears at the bottom, and "United States of America" appears at the top. To the left of the year may be a mint mark “S” for San Francisco. Coins with no mint marks were minted at the Philadelphia Mint.

All i can say is wow!!! didn't knew that a couple of my 1908 One Peso (SFM) had a great history along with it. It may not be the rarest as you said but having a few of this makes me proud as it was handed to me by my father from my Lolo along with few 5peso bill Japan Govt during its Philippine occupation... Thank for the info and more power...

The design of this coins looks like its expensiveness simple design but has a clear expressions of its history looks like a royal money wish to have this design back to Phil. Peso coin.
Junrey Ardina - I really like the series design as well. I think the mint is looking to express the Philippine national individualism as they continue with coin designs into the future.

Wow, I just started stacking silver and was wondering if there were any silver coins from Philippines and came across this video. Hera H- Thank you and yes you probably do. She was initially on the obverse of the 10, 20 and 50 centavos coins starting in 1903 and then later from 1937 to 1945 she was displayed on the 5, 10, 20, and 50 centavos coinage. She then appeared again from 1958 to 1979 on the 10, 25 and 50 Centavos coins. All are beautiful but the coinage made of silver are very collectible in my opinion! Have a great New Year!

The coins you purchased all have the S on it, as san francisco, is there something wrong with out the S, the philidelphia one? I was wondering because all the stuff you bought all had the S. Thank you, and here's a thumbs up.
A coin in this series without a mint mark was minted in the Philadelphia Mint. It just so happened that all my purchases on this last trip were San Francisco minted coins!

Impressive history lesson on the Filipino Peso. Even I learned something from your video. Are you planning to get the 1936 Quezon/Murphy Peso? The 1936 Quezon/Murphy Peso was a commemorative issue that had a mintage of 10,000.
If I am able to find any specimens in good shape for a decent price. The Roosevelt/Murphy peso is tough to find in good shape. But yes, I will eventually find the right buy and add them to my US/PI collection for sure.

This is a HOT topic now in Philippines after it shown in TV in one segment episode as 1peso 90% silver coin may value around 1Million Peso. That's why I ck my old coins I had a 1908 1peso San Francisco good condition some fifty cents 1945 was a good quality it doesn't fade look like a silver & shiny. Thanx for the info bout 1peso hope u can get info bout fifty cents history as this was made too when Japanese conquer Philippines.
Hi Cez, I notice after the 'Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho' show that my Philippine coinage videos have been getting a lot of views and comments. Most of them for price values or wanted to sell them! The history of the fifty Centavos coin follows the peso coin for the most part. Thanks for your comment.

The second rarest one peso is not 1911s. It’s the 1904 P mintage- 10,000 check your info.
