*** IF YOU COULD NOT ENTER THE DESCALING MODE READ HERE *** So you tried to follow the steps detailed in the instruction manual as well as on the Illy website with no success? checked several times tried many times but the power on button just does not blink? Asked for help to the rest of the family and the bright guy in the block and still no way to enter the descaling mode? Well you are not alone, the instructions are outdated: here are the new ones valid on machines sold from year 2019 on : 1) turn the machine on 2) within 10 seconds click on the center button as if you wanted to brew the coffee wait a few secs and stop pressing after you hear a long bip after 3 short ones (about 10 secs). 3) you just entered the descaling mode: 2 buttons will be blinking. 4) fill the tank with 1L of water and the descaling powder, make sure it dissolves and place the tank in it's usual position inside the machine 5) put a large pot\bowl or anything similar that will contain the water that comes out of the steam pipe AND the brew head which must therefore be moved from its default position. 6) click on the brew coffee button and the machine will alternate between pulsing water through the brew head opening and the frothing wand for about 15 minutes and when the water will be almost completely over it will stop 7) the brew coffee button will blink and emit a bip regularly 8) remove the water container, get rid of any remaining water rinse it through to remove any leftover of the deaclcification powder and then refill it and place it back into the machine 9) remove and empty the pot/large bowl you had put under the brew head and the steam pipe 10) click the brew button again and in 3-4 minutes the cleansing mode will be over and you will now be able to enjoy a good Illy coffee as you used to 12) the whole process can be paused and restarted at any time by clicking on the brew coffee (the large button in the middle) . La macchina erogherà acqua in modo intermittente dal gruppo erogatore e dalla lancia vapore (durata 14 minuti). - Al termine la macchina emetterà un prolungato segnale acustico e l'icona blu caffè sarà di nuovo accesa lampeggiante. - Svuotare i recipienti sotto i gruppi. Svuotare il residuo del serbatoio, sciacquarlo, riempirlo d'acqua fresca e posizionarlo nella sua sede. - Premere nuovamente il tasto caffè e attivare così il ciclo di risciacquo. - Al termine delle erogazioni automatiche (circa 3 minuti) la macchina tornerà attiva in posizione erogazione caffè (luce blu accesa fissa) Nota: è possibile interrompere temporaneamente il ciclo, premendo il pulsante caffè. Ripremere il pulsante caffè per riprendere il ciclo.
For anyone who is unable to get their Illy Francis Francis X7.1 Iperespresso machine into descale mode, follow these directions: • You will know the machine wants to be descaled when the red alert triangle is blinking (lower right part of control pad) 1) Machine must be OFF and cool in order to descale the machine! 2) Fill the water container to MAX with very warm faucet water. 3) Add a packet of Illy / Urnex Dezcal or similar citric acid based descaler to the water, stirring it in until dissolved. 4) Replace the water container into your Illy Francis Francis X7.1 Iperespresso machine. 5) Place a 1L (minimum) plastic catch bowl (or other suitable container) under the brew head AND frothing wand, which should be pointed toward the center of the stage under the brew head (as in video above). 6) Power the machine ON. 7) IMMEDIATELY depress and hold only the BREW (coffee cup symbol) until the machine emits THREE SHORT BEEPS, followed by ONE LONG BEEP. Release the BREW button after the long beep. 8) Press the BREW button again, as you would when brewing a cup of espresso. 9) The machine will begin to PULSE, and the STEAM BUTTON will blink. The machine will alternate between pulsing water through the brew head opening and the frothing wand. This will continue until the water container is EMPTY. Be ready to remove the water container, and IMMEDIATELY refill it with cool (Brita filtered or distilled is best) water, and replace it as quickly as possible. The machine WILL NOT STOP THE DESCALING CYCLE, so replace the water container as quickly as you can. You will probably need to empty the catch bowl at least once or twice during this procedure, and the water will be VERY HOT, so use caution! 10) The machine will continue to pulse between the brew head opening and the frothing wand. 11) The machine will stop pulsing at some point during this second tankful, and the BREW button will begin to BLINK, with an alternating BEEP between blinking. If there is very little water left in the water container, fill it up with cool water again. Empty your catch bowl if it is full and you haven't already done so! Once everything is back in place, press the blinking / beeping BREW button, which will begin to rinse the machine through. 12) The machine may repeat Step 11 more than once! 13) The machine should now come out of DESCALING CYCLE on its own, with the red POWER button illuminated, along with the blue BREW button being on and solid. 14) Run one or two BREW cycles, with cool, filtered water. 15) Run the STEAM cycle for a few moments, as you would when frothing for a beverage, to ensure no descaler remains in the frothing wand. • Your Illy Francis Francis X7.1 Iperespresso machine is now descaled!
Even after pressing both buttons for 5 seconds. Those 3 buttons didnt start flashing the lights. So the descaling isn't starting.... What am I doing wrong?

HELP! I love my x7.1, however, lately the start button had begun acting finicky, and now won’t come on at all. I have 2 machines-1 for work (y3) and this one for home that was used occasionally on weekends. Now it won’t come on at all. This is my 3rd machine. The 1st Francis machine stopped working presumably because I didn’t descale it in time and had to be tossed😞. Yes, this x7.1 is about 6-7 years old, but wasn’t used a lot and was descaled regularly. Illy is NO help with this. Again, I love the design of this machine, but can’t buy another. Has anyone experienced this? If so, where you able to fix it or have suggestions? Thanks!!
If two fingers method is not working, then just long press the cup button right after switching the machine on. Press and hold the cup button only! It will beep a few times, you will see

I’m having the same issue and have posted this question. Illy’s no help, and with the cost of finding a repair shop , you can purchase another. I had the same issue with an early model of the Francis Francis, but don’t want to keep throwing these beautiful machines out. Hope someone an help us.

My Power light didn't flash, only the descale warning light, but it still worked just as the video says. But you have to be very patient with the descaling, after the initial small amount of liquid comes out (about a cup of coffee) then the machine sits for about 8 mins and you can think it is doing nothing.

I'm fine descaling but I don't manage to remove the the dripping tray (the plastic one under the stainless steel one). It seems kind of stuck. Any tips?
Hi, yes, that is a bit tricky to remove. After you took out the metal tray, you can lift off the plastic by firmly holding onto any of the tray you can grab. You may have to give it a bit of a forceful lift but it will lift off. It wont break. After cleaning just firmly push it back into place, put the metal platform back and it should be done:0)

on newer mashines the descaling way is changed: press and hold for 5 secs cup button immediately after power on
