Fun fact: GMC actually sold their Topkick trucks in the USSR as Pepsi delivery trucks.

GM always made bad ass looking trucks. Even back in the late 50's /60's. I had a 67'GM with a Detroit 6/71 , back in 76 I think it was a 67.
I drove a really nice 5 star general a while back. That was enjoyable.
#11.. A 1980 GMC General with custom sleeper was The Snowmans rig in Smokey And The Bandit II..
GMC general was in smokey and the bandit 2 and a few other tv and movies in the early 80's

I know of one 5 Star General today that's still working for a living as a dump truck. I personally want a GMC General tractor.
There is a lot more 5 stars around and still in service now. I know of 12 just in my area. GM1
@@scott250r2 I just ment in my area. Though to be honest I haven't seen it since I made my comment 8 months back so I'm wondering if it hasn't been put in the bone yard.

If you look now, the merger between gm and international did eventually happen. The new 4500 and 5500 series is just that.

Did you know? In the 1950s, GMC was the first to offer hydro-matic automatic transmission as an option. Many were so equipped.

Please do a piece on Hendrickson trucks Magnus Hendrickson. Started his truck and bus company in Chicago Illinois They were built in Lyons Illinois on 47th st for years until they moved there operations to Grand Rapids Mich at the end of the 80s. They bought their cabs from International which were 2070 A fleet star cabs but made their own hoods to accommodate big power that was mostly cat or Detroit their trucks were extra heavy duty Michigan Specials A lot of small fleets in the Chicago area bought them

GM eventually built the General in Pontiac Michigan at the HD Plant before being sold to Volvo
I remember the GMC General, Astro, and Brigadier were more common than the Chevrolet Bison, Titan, and Bruin.

I’ve seen a lot of old GMC & Chevy trucks...like the look of the GMCs more.🥰 I owned a 62 Crackerbox until 2 years ago when I traded it to my brother. They made some really good looking trucks. Love it when I see them at truck shows.🥰

Actually Detroit Diesel started out as GM DIESEL (1938 ) then GM changed the name to Detroit Diesel so they could sell the engine to other truck builders. Not sure what year the name change came about. I'm thinking around 1963 but not certain

The cracker box was quite possibly the ugliest truck ever built...however they had the 8v71 witch was a power house back in the early 70s...Great Video Thanks A Bushel Ms Maddie.
GMC stopped building the cracker box in 1967 the Astro came out in 1968 . Plus when GMC started building the cracker box in 1958 it had the I 6 71, 6V71 and 8V71 in horsepower from 150 up to 260 (the 8V71) later in the 60s the horsepower grew to 318 (8V71) then in early 70s they added a turbo, and horsepower grew to 400, then the 8V92 came out and it went to 500, and in the late 70's went to 600 horsepower

They never said anything about the GMC , White motor company, Volvo agreements.
White was dropped and Volvo took over and GMC dropped out of the class 8 trucks.
I drove a 77 GMC Astro, Ford WT 9000, Pete 362 , and KW k100. The GMC and Ford both had better heating and A/C. The big windshields of the GMC made it hot in the summer, but I put cardboard at the bottom of the windshield and used tint at the top and that helped a bunch.
If I ever had to run in very cold weather I would stay away from the paccar trucks.
Of course today they are much better. I also drove a 77 International cab over transtar didn't care much for those either.
HVAC system wasn't as good as the Ford or GMC
In over 18 years in the military, I NEVER heard the term "Top Kick"... Never.

The Budd Conestoga was an all welded stainless steel transport aircraft.
As a child in the 60’s I don’t remember the model but my father drove a 1968 10 wheel GMC box truck. It had the GMC V6 engine with the 4 speed transmission and the high low axle. He called it Big Bertha, in 1972 they bought him a new Chevrolet set up the same way only with the 366 V8.
Dad drove the Chevy for 2 weeks then went back to the GMC, the V8 had no where near the power of the V6.
Which gmc v6? They offered gas v6s up to 478 cubes and the 366 was the smallest big block chevy v8 you could get.

I remember as a kid seeing a v12 engine in a mid 60s truck
#12.. The same 1980 General made a brief appearance in the Clint Eastwood movie Any Which Way You Can..

Like the phrase, don't know Jack. You drag one "S" after that and someones thin skin was torn. I didn't know a lot of this and thought cool little nitch you have... Wish I had thought of it sooner. Stuff you do know but forget whether you knew or not but know that your going to again forget as its stuff that doesn't pertain anymore.
GMC once built the brown UPS trucks
I drove a Brigadier semi for a week before threatening to quit the company if they didn't find me a different truck. It was one of the most uncomfortable trucks I ever drove, the cab was too small. The truck had a low cab roof and at 6' 1" sitting on a Bostrom ratchet seat my head kept hitting the roof at every bump in the road. When I readjusted the seat so my head wouldn't hit the roof the seat would bottom out on those bumps and beat my ass to death
I drove one of those too, used for city delivery. I would hate to think how rough it would have been over the road.

Hated that the doghouse forced the pedals to the left so it was crooked using them. You sat on a angle. Not the most comfortable driving position.😩

I always wanted to drive a General but never did. Learned on an Astro in a lot in driving school 1992. They werent roadworthy.
Why many people love Astros and ive never heard they weren't road worthy even from people who hated Astros.

Shame no mention of the larger highway gas engines of those days. There was a V 6 if I recall in the 400 Cub. in range and the monster V 12 that would out pull just about every thing on the road as long as the gas stations were close together. Pure torque at low R P M but 1 to 2 Miles per gallon/ Gas was less than 49 cents an Can. gallon in those days.
The gas price in the early 60s was about 25 cents a gallon. Diesel about 20cents a gallon
The gas v-12 you're talking about was 712 cubes. Made with 2 of big sizes.
V6 gassers 305-478 cubes massive bitches there

There is now a Silverado medium duty truck 4500 and up class with a detuned DuraMax and 4x4 live front axle in collaboration with international succeeded the Kodiak but no GMC model.
We had the Jimmy mixer trucks with the gutless weak Detroit diesels . Not even close to a Mack or Oshkosh mixer off road . I hated them .
The 5 star GMC General SBFA was a real bad ass and gr8 looking.. Loved driving it. GM1 TRUMP 2020
Generals were cool looking, but they were crappy. They were noisy in the cab and the bunk was horrible.
I started trucks in this class back in 1976. I didn't mind the 9500 GMC, but these 5 Star Gens/Bisons... garbage. It turned like a dinosaur and just a plastic piece of nothing. Did the job and that was by the grace of good luck . Although I am hearing that GMC is considering a return to the market in the next little bit with the return of the Astro and the convent models... Yeah sure, whatever you say.. By the way comparing that, General, against the Prime Picks,, the Peterbilt or Kenny, is like comparing a Chevet to a Dodge Charger RT,,, there is no comparing the 2.
Never heard complaints on how bison and generals drove worst complaints ive ever heard is parts avaliablity sucks now go figure tho
Take a Chevrolet, rebadge it , add nicer trim= GMC

Too bad GM is no longer in the class 8 biz. Another great company taken down by stupid people.
EMD was another division that they screwed up. They had the largest share of the locomotive market. The diesel engines were used in not only locomotives, but ships and power generation.
