  • As recently as a century ago, scientists doubted whether the universe extended beyond our own Milky Way - until astronomer Edwin Hubble, working with the world’s most powerful telescope in the mountains high above Los Angeles, discovered just how vast the universe truly is. Visit the underground vault of the Carnegie Observatories, where paradigm-shifting discoveries are annotated by hand on glass photographic slides; and the historic Mount Wilson observatory.

I remember being "dragged" to the mt Wilson observatory as a child. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I knew the history

Imagine what we can do now in our own backyard with today's technology, we couldn't even dream of doing years ago. Thanks to all those people who led the way in understanding the cosmos.

Hubble wasn’t the first to discover the vastness of the universe, he was just the first to be recognized.

I never will forget the first time I viewed Saturn and its rings...age 10. In my mind, science fiction and science Fact blazed into my reality....

Loved this episode. But please do not be confused: some of the old footage is of the 200-inch Hale Telescope at Palomar, not the 100-inch Hooker at Mt. Wilson. Edwin Hubble is also shown with the Palomar 48-inch Schmidt.

Pictures are often confused with the subject matter! I was present when they moved the 200 inch telescope mirror up the winding road to Palomar! I get confused when the picture doesn't match the story.

23:55 now if only we could get to know our real place on the planet...
an annoying skin condition that is getting out of hand.
Either we take care of the planet, or the planet will take care of us.
