The Mt Wilson Trail is the oldest route to the summit to Mt Wilson. Unlike the popular route to Mt Wilson from Chantry Flat, the Mt Wilson Trail is mellow and lacks the crowds and kids looking for the waterfall. The Mt Wilson Trail offers beautiful views as it ascends the side of Little Santa Anita Canyon, and being the oldest trail, offers some historical landmarks as well. If you've only hiked Mt Wilson from Chantry Flat, I highly recommend giving this route a try too.

Whether you're looking for a challenging workout or a peaceful hike, the Mt. Wilson Trail is a top choice for outdoor adventures in Southern California.
I'm gonna hike this trail tomorrow. Thanks for the upload. It's my first time hiking in 10 years.
How’d it go?
@@callumhanlon9488hey! So i made 3/4 way into the hike! Basically to the Bench, and the remaining of the trail was closed because the maintenance workers were doing maintenance on the power lines at the observatory on top of the mountain! Um it was extremely difficult! Bring plenty of water and happy hiking!
i used your guide yesterday..I've never did long distance hiking, my 1st time to complete Wilson, my legs are smoked. Thank you
One of my favorite training hikes. This is always my first hike to start getting fit for Mount Whitney.
I really appreciate how informative your videos without giving too much of the hike away. Nice balance. I especially like taking screen shots when you describe choices at junctions. It’s nice to have those trail directions available.
Awesome, thank you Patti, great feedback. That's what I'm basically striving for; I want to give you the info you need to do the hike safely without overdoing it. Thanks & see you out there!
I just did this trail at 5 am but next weekend I will
Do it at 2-3 am …. The weather was very pleasant and it got real busy on our way dawn 😎
@@Hikingguybut you didn’t went to the end passing the parking lot where the summit is with the trail name ☹️
@@nomada6789 I agree - I wish he had gone to the end to show the summit - that's what we were waiting for during the video.
I hiked to Mt. Wilson for the first time on this trail from Sierra Madre. I've been to Mt. Wilson from Chantry but this trail was well worth it. After Orchard camp, the trail is steep but so very beautiful and worth every step. The views are breathtaking. Thank you for the video and info on this gorgeous trail. I went during the week on a Tuesday and only saw 4 people that day and the weather was perfect and overcast.
Just did this hike last Saturday. We started at 5am, it was amazing! Definitely going back.
Awesome information. We took our Scout troop up there yesterday. It was challenging but very rewarding. Thank you for the great info.
I've been waiting for this hike for months. I'm doing this Saturday with my daughter, following your path. Will let you know the results. Thanks again
Thanks!
Big thank you!!!!
First time viewer, I found your video from looking up Mt. Wilson and coming across your trail guide. Thank you for both your video and guide being very indepth and easy to follow along as well as full of great advice.
I am planning on hiking Mt. Wilson tomorrow in training to prepare to hike the south to north rim of the grand canyon in a day and then back two days later, later this summer. Thank you for helping me along my journey and adventure.
Awesome, welcome aboard and I'm glad the guide was helpful. I also have a Rim 2 Rim guide that might be helpful on the website and some other GC tips. Hope to see you out there one day! 👍
@@Hikingguy thanks, I will definitely check out your rim to rim guide. I ended up working a substitute teaching job today last minute but will do the hike either tomorrow or this weekend.
Thanks again. Oh and I hope to see you out there someday as well.
Great hike, especially for incline...both my legs are super sore and done for the whole week.
My wife and I hiked it yesterday, we’re both in our 50’s, a bit over 16 miles, 5k feet up then 5k feet down, ate the most amazing hotdogs 😅. Commenting while in bed next day, ouch and yay 😂. So happy we did it and recommend it to anyone that wants to challenge themselves.
How long did it take?
@@maryb.9463 It took us 14 hours because we sat at the top for a while and enjoyed the view and some of the best hot dogs we've ever had. Do to our choice of foot wear and my wife did loose 9 toe nails because the walk down is pretty brutal if you don't have shoes with a big enough toe box. She was in no pain at all, they just fell off lol and have all grown back. Trek poles will make it smoother, we didn't have those either lol.
Very useful video. We are taking our Scout Troop up Mt. Wilson using this trail. We are sharing this video with them.
Thank you & have fun!
@@Hikingguy Wow! A challenge for sure. The Scouts did it. Thank you for all that you do.
This hike broke me almost. Exhausted for three days.
Thank you this was very informative 👍
Nice vid. Thanks for the information. Gonna have to tackle this one soon.

Did this hike at midnight and finished around 9am took my time with it . 8am already was 90 degrees outside ! Definitely met awesome people along the way including a bear encounter
Nice - I haven't done this as a night hike yet but now its on my list.
6:16 make sure to stay away from the Purple Poodle!! if you touch these plants, you'll get a bad rash
Fantastic video. Really appreciate all your great work.
thank you thank you!
Glad to see more posts! Sounds like a bomb hike for sure!
Yea, it's a nice one, give it a whirl.
Cool hiking trail. A definite bucket list for me. Enjoyed the video 👍
Thank you for the video. More videos please. One of devils backbone at baldy.
thank you!!!1 && I have it - check out the video for Mt Baldy Hike
Thank you. How about Bears?
Just completed this with my son Sunday 7/31 ... beautiful trail, but wow a real butt kicker!!
Superbly useful - thanks!
Thanks so much for all your work! Amazing page. Wondering if this Mt Wilson hike has a lot of narrow/dropoff sections? Not a huge fan of those(!) but hoping to do this hike in October if they're not too bad. Thanks again.
Thank you 👍 and no narrow drop-offs, you should be fine.
Timely video with the gate to Chantry being closed for the past month or so.
I did this trail for the 1st time on New Years and I think I have to agree with pretty much everything. Parking way easier, tougher than Chantry, less pretty, but views are incredible! It's fun, but it is more of a butt kicker for sure!!!
Nice nice, yea, the gate on the road to Chantry is always a pain. When I do go there I usually go early and wait at the gate. The sheriff usually gets there early and opens it but you never know. This was first way I hiked Wilson way back when and it was great to get back recently.
@@Hikingguy haha...that's funny you say that, I did the loop 3 times last year using that logic. At the gate by like 5:20. Only had to wait until 6 once. Wish they'd open it...I like that trail.
Coleman Outdoors yea it’s nice when you catch it early and you have the whole trail to yourself
How long did you need for the whole trail? Thank you :)
@@testnee3622 shoot....I think it was around 6 hrs hiking time and like 8 hrs total. Be sure to carve out most of your day if you go this way. Chantry Flats is nicer and a tad easier if you haven't gone that route. It's my favorite!
Great info! Thank you for the content.
👍
This is really helpful. Thanks.
You're welcome, it's a great trail, hope you get to enjoy it.
Did this hike yesterday , so sore today
Ha, yea, no hiding on this one, it's a tough one
How long did it take to go up? And down?
Great. Fun hike
Took me like 8 hrs I was so tired lol
Congrats, it's a tough one!
love it. thank you.
Cool. I wish I saw this earlier...I did a similar video of Mt Wilson on my channel.
Can you drink the water at First Water?
Yes but treat it
thank you so much great video. you rock
You're welcome, glad it was handy! 👍
Hi Cris. Does the Forest Service close any trails in the Angeles Forest after rains? If so, is there a website to go check on trail closures?
It happens sometimes - I always check the official USDA FS website and their Twitter feed.
Im totally dirtbiking down this??
Thank u so much for ur video very helpful 👍. Just curious where is ur starting point at ? What location?

Have you ever done Mt Harvard, Yale, or Hastings Peak?
Thank you for the great info! What time do you usually start the climb? How long does it take usually? Thanks again!
Check out the article for time & distance - I usually start at sunrise to beat the heat and crowds...
@@Hikingguy Great website!! Saved to my favorite. Thanks again for sharing the solid research!
Nice video, may I join you in your next hiking adventure?
I'm going up!
Go for it, it's a fun one!
Love me Mount Wilson!! It's one of the 12/6 peak challenge. The loop or from Sturtevant Falls in and out is great and challenging either way. If you are looking for even more challenging way to Wilsontry Echo Mt.
I just did that hike today, but my all trails indictes only 10.5 miles
Sometimes you can get errors on GPS units, def more like 7 each way
Was it hot?
not too bad
