The "Voting Rights Act" is a law designed to protect the RIGHTS to VOTE of individual citizens! How can the very people who are supposed to have their rights protected by this law not be able to act, to petition before the courts, violations of those rights? In what bizzaro world does this make sense?
@@jennsprague6080 One example might be if a county establishes a rule that African-Americans are not allowed to vote. This is would be a clear violation of the VRA, and would generally be addressed by suing the county or state agency that was responsible. Under the 8th Circuit's decision, individual citizens would be barred from action, leaving only the Justice Department being allowed to sue the responsible agency. The bigger problem is that a Supreme Court decision like this isn't actually going to remove the peoples' right to action - it's likely to merely transform it from action in the courtroom to action of a more physical nature.

As an Englishman, I find it so difficult to understand how justice in America is so political, ruled over by judges appointed by politicians who do so in order to further their sides political best will. In the UK judicial appointments have been the responsibility of an independent Judicial Appointments Commission, judges are appointed by their peers.
As an American, I don't understand it either. You would think that judges would only look at law books and evidence for judgement. But they seem to look towards the people who put them on the bench and the people that give them gifts before looking at case law and facts. I wish our judiciary was set up more like you described.
@@williameiffert494 Democratic presidents appoint judges based on the Bar's assessment of their performance. Republican presidents since Reagan have appointed them on RNC recommendations as to their LACK of impartiality and compliance with conservative values like guns and unborn rights.
Except that SCOTUS is illegitimate. Three of the judges were appointed via the credibly accused rapist Trump. The convicted of fraud Trump (NY tax fraud). This is why I argue that conservatives do not deserve the same human rights that the rest of us do. Nothing good comes from conservatives. this is just another inhuman ruling in their quest for power and domination. I would argue that conservatives are never legitimate members of a democratic society. If they won by cheating, did they really win? If they are never held responsible, via qualified immunity and rigged elections, why are they granted any power in our democracy? They don't belong. No conservative, from judge to politician to voter is a legitimate member of a democratic society. They barely qualify as human. Humanoid probably. But not human. Prohibition. The entire nation refused to recognize the "legitimacy" of that constitutional amendment. If we refused to legitimate republican bs, say ignore their laws, target them for retaliation if they use the cops or the legal system, ignore their judges' rulings.. we would win. It has to be a democratic movement to reject them. Every hand lifted in protest. Every person standing and refusing to obey these illegitimate interlopers in our country. No respect. It wasn’t a painful cry but more so a cry of relief! I’m now 63 years old & feel that history is repeating itself. Is this what trump & MAGA mean when they say “Make America Great Again?”
It's EXACTLY what they mean. "Make America Great Again" is likely more along the line of pre-Civil War. That's why so many of us don't understand how people can vote against their own interests.
Yes it does your vote is a voice as to how the government will work for you a U. S. Citizen but if all these other circuits decide to follow suit and your vote if the state or county parish district or even tribal lands voters will be subject to the political winds of justices appointed or approval of state Supreme Courts. Welcome to 1900
South Dakota resident here! I often feel like my vote doesn’t count because of the electoral college…☹️. This is just as troubling. End voter suppression!!!!
Actually, the Electoral College means that your vote counts much more than mine in Massachusetts, and even more than that compared to a vote in California. I think what you mean is that your vote doesn't count because of the winner-takes-all system in SD and most other states.
The USA is one of only a few countries to use this antiquated and unfair system - Myanmar is one of them! It should be "one person, one vote," or at least apportion EC votes as a percentage of those available in each State. If a State votes 48% for one candidate and 52% for the other, why should the winner take all? One day, the USA may get over its "exceptionalism" and look to other countries to improve its method of electing a President for All.
The courts do not make laws, they just interpret the laws. Can't the federal government write a law stating that any citizen of the USA may bring an issue to the courts (any level of court), for that court to hear it?
@@dee_dee_place they can but republicans ensure that no law like that would ever get enough votes to get to the presidents desk. the filibuster is a b*tch
We ALSO need to do away with Electoral College! The ONLY reason Donnie and other Republicans have gotten in for quite awhile is the Electoral votes! If the POPULAR votes won, 2016 would have been Hillary Clinton would have been President, NOT Trump! How many votes were unheard then??? NEARLY 2.9 MILLION VOTES!
no kidding. i used to live in Oregon...vote by mail...every effort to facilitate voting. now i live in Virginia...the impediments are unreal. you can't get to a poll because of physical reasons, work etc, you "can" get an absentee ballot, BUT for a few years i had to have a witness to watch me opening the ballot, vote and sign it. ummm yeah, during pandemic that wasn't easy. they have done away with the witness signature starting this year, but now there is this DETAILED form on the back of the envelope, in tiny print to be filled out to perfection. you miss one item and your ballot is disqualified. *BIG EYE ROLL
This must be struck down surely. The very basis of bringing a case is if you have standing. They are now saying that people being disenfranchised don't have standing! It's ludicrous.
I believe the electoral system was to help the balance of powers between the larger vs lessor populated states. If not for that system, the drafter's believed that The lesser populated states would always be at the wishes of the more heavily populated ones. It was a compromise at the time in order to create the union.
I once felt it should be popular vote in the US. However, once I got thru 5th grade social studies, I realized the value of the electoral system. Popular vote would mean the entire country would be ruled by what California and New York wanted. It would mean folks in major cities would dictate the law of the entire land. You’d end up seeing the decline of our food supply system because city dwellers (mostly leftists and democrats) would likely end private ownership of vast swaths of farmland. They’d forcibly split it up and distribute it, thereby destroying untold farms. It’s a great thing we have farmers that LOVE what they do and provide our food. Remember what AOC once said; “We don’t need farmers, we have grocery stores.” Well, if we went to popular vote (ie. a pure democracy), then it wouldn’t be long before we didn’t have those farms. The people who received the parceled land as part of the “redistribution” wouldn’t be likely to farm it. Then we’d truly suffer. People on the left keep crying about “losing our democracy.” The fact is, this is a constitutional republic, not a democracy. Our representatives are democratically elected. Not to mention, this is the united STATES of America. The STATES created the federal government. The federal government did NOT create the states. Each state has its own constitution and its own laws. People in different areas of the country have different likes, dislikes, values, etc. Folks in the city wouldn’t want folks in the country to dictate how they live. The opposite is also true. Go to a popular vote and that’s where we’d end up. The electoral prevents that, or at least that’s the idea. Frankly, I’d be more concerned about losing our republic. Lose that and we’ll descend into chaos and possibly a civil war.
It think it's weird that only 15 million people voted in the last election in a country of over 330 million people. And apparently that was an unusually high turnover rate. How the hell does that happen?
@@jessicaarmstrong5035 if you’re talking about Australia, I don’t think the population is 330 million. If you’re talking about the USA, then supposedly 158 million people voted. A little less than half the population. That’s estimated to be about 63% of voting age people.

In the UK judicial appointments have been the responsibility of an independent Judicial Appointments Commission, judges are appointed by their peers.
As an American, I don't understand it either. You would think that judges would only look at law books and evidence for judgement. Only people in power who don't want to abide by the rule of law to stay in power don't want people to have the right to vote..
This must be struck down surely. The very basis of bringing a case is if you have standing. They are now saying that people being disenfranchised don't have standing! It's ludicrous.
Wow!
Absolutely appalling. And Absolutely grateful to Elias and his team.
As an Australian, where we have compulsory voting, the whole US electoral system seems bizarre.
That's a FACT!

But it does seem to be the #1 most common trait among them, that they are just filled with absolute hatred for nearly everyone everywhere, except for those who are after the same goal, and that only lasts as long as they are profiting by the alliance. They don't genuinely LIKE anyone! What a sorry existence that must be!
“Keep the people stupid, then, there will be less critical thinkers for the GOP to deal with!”
Vote blue to save America!
✋💙💙💙🤚
You're a "critical" thinker
regarding what specifically...??
Morons vote!

Regarding their -2x indicted and 91 felony charged- orange god!
And we didn’t even talk about the lies they’re pulling out of their empty vessels… 🤭
It feels like the 8th circuit doesn't believe in government for the people by the people then. And I live in one of those blasted states.
They never have.
Common sense states that a person that is able to vote should be able as a person to fight in the courts for that vote. The 8th circuit makes zero sense on this issue.
@@karlwithak. Not a prize winning attitude. People do get discouraged that is for certain.
I can't wait to have a dispensable income where I can donate to Democracy Docket. You guys rock. Keep on fighting the good fight.
Thank you Mark ! You have no real idea how we the people value you and your words and work ! Thank you doesn’t even come close how much we the people value and appreciate your work for all you do ! Thank you from the true people who absolutely love our country and democracy 🇺🇸🥰🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Every department, including the DOJ, should have the resources to protect our voting and civil rights.
Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota should connect with you guys to regain their right to enforce Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
I am very grateful to Mark and his team
We need to do away with the electoral college. One person, one voice. That will end the need to gerrymander.
Seems easy enough, doesn't it?!
Justice must come
