@Brian Taylor Cohen • Just an FYI, your clickbait titles make it virtually impossible to refer back to this video. A much better title would be "Appeals court denies private parties right to protect Voting Rights." Why talk about a court case with all the Trump cases around?
In my opinion, you should also be using hashtags, e.g., #VotingRights. You don't appear to be maximizing the available tools to get your word out.

It's why Dems need to expand their majority in the Senate. We need enough of a cushion to get 50 Dem senators on board to remove the filibuster. The filibuster is what stopped the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and For the People Act from passing in the last Congress, as Manchin and Sinema thought protecting the filibuster was more important than protecting our voting rights.

@BenFrankarts Try facts instead FrankARTS:1) It was the Democratic Party that supported slavery and the Confederacy.
Lincoln was a Republican and it was Lincoln who freed the slaves. During the Lincoln-Douglas debates it was Lincoln who called for the end of slavery and it was Douglas who wanted it to continue.
      2) The KKK was founded as a militant arm of the Democratic Party.
      3) The 14th Amendment was pushed through over the objections of the Democratic Party.
      4) The Civil Rights Act was pushed through Congress by the Republican Party. The Democrats tried to filibuster it. The filibuster was lead by Robert Byrd and Al Gore, Sr.
      5) The Democratic Party has elected members of the KKK to Congress. The aforementioned Robert Byrd was not only a recruiter for the KKK, he also rose to the position of “Exalted Cyclops” in his local chapter.
      6) It was a Democratic president named Bill Clinton that made light of the KKK involvement in Democratic politics.
      7) It was a Democratic governor named George Wallace who said: “In the name of the greatest people that have ever trod this earth, I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever”
      8) Democratic controlled cities across the land are in financial ruin.
      9) It is the Democratic Party that has refused to allow people of the black race to prosper. They are the party of slavery in the past and they still enslave the blacks today!

The "Voting Rights Act" is a law designed to protect the RIGHTS to VOTE of individual citizens! How can the very people who are supposed to have their rights protected by this law not be able to act, to petition before the courts, violations of those rights? In what bizzaro world does this make sense?

@@jennsprague6080 One example might be if a county establishes a rule that African-Americans are not allowed to vote. This is would be a clear violation of the VRA, and would generally be addressed by suing the county or state agency that was responsible. Under the 8th Circuit's decision, individual citizens would be barred from action, leaving only the Justice Department being allowed to sue the responsible agency.
The bigger problem is that a Supreme Court decision like this isn't actually going to remove the peoples' right to action - it's likely to merely transform it from action in the courtroom to action of a more physical nature.

Except that SCOTUS is illegitimate. Three of the judges were appointed via the credibly accused rapist Trump. The convicted of fraud Trump (NY tax fraud).
This is why I argue that conservatives do not deserve the same human rights that the rest of us do. Nothing good comes from conservatives. this is just another inhuman ruling in their quest for power and domination.
I would argue that conservatives are never legitimate members of a democratic society. If they won by cheating, did they really win? If they are never held responsible, via qualified immunity and rigged elections, why are they granted any power in our democracy? They don't belong. No conservative, from judge to politician to voter is a legitimate member of a democratic society. They barely qualify as human. Humanoid probably. But not human.
Prohibition. The entire nation refused to recognize the "legitimacy" of that constitutional amendment. If we refused to legitimate republican bs, say ignore their laws, target them for retaliation if they use the cops or the legal system, ignore their judges' rulings.. we would win. It has to be a democratic movement to reject them. Every hand lifted in protest. Every person standing and refusing to obey these illegitimate interlopers in our country. No respect. No acknowledgement. Because if this doesn't work, it's war. You must never give succor to the enemy.

I believe the electoral system was to help the balance of powers between the larger vs lessor populated states.
If not for that system, the drafter's believed that The lesser populated states would always be at the wishes of the more heavily populated ones.
It was a compromise at the time in order to create the union.

    • @og824

I once felt it should be popular vote in the US. However, once I got thru 5th grade social studies, I realized the value of the electoral system. Popular vote would mean the entire country would be ruled by what California and New York wanted. It would mean folks in major cities would dictate the law of the entire land. You’d end up seeing the decline of our food supply system because city dwellers (mostly leftists and democrats) would likely end private ownership of vast swaths of farmland. They’d forcibly split it up and distribute it, thereby destroying untold farms. It’s a great thing we have farmers that LOVE what they do and provide our food.
Remember what AOC once said; “We don’t need farmers, we have grocery stores.” Well, if we went to popular vote (ie. a pure democracy), then it wouldn’t be long before we didn’t have those farms. The people who received the parceled land as part of the “redistribution” wouldn’t be likely to farm it. Then we’d truly suffer.
People on the left keep crying about “losing our democracy.” The fact is, this is a constitutional republic, not a democracy. Our representatives are democratically elected.
Not to mention, this is the united STATES of America. The STATES created the federal government. The federal government did NOT create the states. Each state has its own constitution and its own laws. People in different areas of the country have different likes, dislikes, values, etc. Folks in the city wouldn’t want folks in the country to dictate how they live. The opposite is also true. Go to a popular vote and that’s where we’d end up. The electoral prevents that, or at least that’s the idea.
Frankly, I’d be more concerned about losing our republic. Lose that and we’ll descend into chaos and possibly a civil war.

What is the basis of their argument to block private citizens and only allow the DOJ to bring these voting rights legal cases to court? Private citizens are affected and harmed by these voting rights violations - that's why they bring these cases. I've never heard of a court, particularly an appellate district, from preventing harmed parties from bringing a legal case. What was the legal argument that was found persuasive?? It doesn't make sense to me.
