The nib and feed are setup OK. The issue for the nib being so wet is because the gap between the tines is too large - that will let more ink flow on the page. You can reduce the gap between the tines and that should help with the ink flow... but be careful is easy to mess it up since it is a fude nib - a little bit harder to reduce that gap. The HongDian is more comfortable because of the angle - less steep than the Jinhao. A steeper angle will force you to hold the fountain pen more upright, which is more unnatural for majority of the people.
Yeah, I suspected the angle was at play here, which is why I compared them. To be fair, the Jinhao nib isn’t unusable, just a tad wet for my taste. I don’t feel super qualified to tighten the tines of nibs. Loosening is way easier. I wonder if that’s why a few of my recent Jinhao acquisitions have been a bit tight, so that it’s easier to hone the nib how you like it? Maybe that giving them too much credit, but honestly, among budget fountain pen brands, I feel like Jinhao doesn’t get enough credit a lot of the time.

They cut some corners, but at the prices they are selling for is really hard to complain from my point of view. And they have the best nibs for beginners to learn how to modify. I have a couple fude nibs. I have one of the Sailors and a number 5 and 6 Jinhao fude. The 6 was a loose one I got to try and put on a moonman pen, but it ended up being really dry and scratchy and I couldn't figure out how to tune that sort of nib. The 5 is really nice though, it came on a Jinhao 8802 I believe? It's also a two tone nib, which actually seems to be made out of a thinner material than the full silver colored Jinhao nibs. Because it fits loose in other Jinhao's that came with silver nibs, but fits fine in another Jinhao I have that also came with a two tone nib. My favorite way to use a fude, rather than drawing with it directly, is to fill it with a pastel ink (such as Sailor Manyo Haha) and use it to shade with over a darker water proof ink like platinum carbon black.
It almost seems like it would be more fun as a dip pen nib? Haha. As versatile as these nibs are, I almost feel like the limitations of a traditional nib help me make better art, if that makes sense.
I bought a Majohn T1 with a Jinhao fude nib, and I love it (I was looking for large ink capacity) I tried getting a #5 Jinhao fude nib for my TWSBI Eco, but it didn't fit right. Even though they're the same size, the TWSBI nib has facets while the Jinhao is rounded, so it leaks
Jinhao also has (or at least had a few years ago) fude nib options on the "shark" 993 model and the "swan" 995. I got a 12 pack of them with fude nibs for $20, and while they're pretty nice for under $2 each... they're nothing amazing. If you don't know the shark/swan pens, they have a tiny hooded nib, and the widest these fudes can get is still less than some stock stubs out there. Quite nice for a quirky fude that's cheaper than some gel pen refills. I can take one to a cafe to doodle with, and if anyone is curious I'll happily give it away (and have a spare cartridge or two with me to throw in for fun). But I'll stick to a Sailor Fude de Mannen, Hongdian, or Moonman for a proper "fountain pen that handles like a paint brush" experience.
Oh and I'll add that I've used larger Jinhao, Majohn/Moonman, and Hongdian fude nibs, and the Jinhao #5 are my least favorite -- Moonman/Majohn pens from a lot of sellers are extra frustrating, because while I quite like the Moonman fude nib (not too wet, and can consistently get lines at widths in between maximum and minimum), a lot of the Moonman/Majohn listings with fude are actually seller swapped in Jinhao nibs that are wet to the point of splotchiness when you get them.
Yeah, I have a video on the Jinhao Shark on this channel, from way back when I was still filming on my phone. I also found it to be impressive for the price, but the nib needed a lot of work. After really going to town on it with brass sheets and micro mesh, I got something that works really well, but I still don’t find myself picking it up all that often. Didn’t know they made a fude nib version.
Glad to know it’s not just me with the Jinhao nibs. That’s why I like putting videos out. Sometimes I genuinely want to know if anyone else is seeing what I see.
Glad it’s not just me (or my inability to properly seat a nib)! To be fair, it is usable, and some people will probably prefer the wet nib. I’m just too much of a control freak to give up my dry feeds!
1. My two 82's with fudes are just fine; actually I think all fudes are about the same, imo, wet, variable, and reliable. 2. As an abstractionist, MY lines are real. I got nothing but lines and planes. And maybe dots. 3. Sailor now sells their fude nibs in normal bodies, for double the price (still inexpensive).
Yeah, mine do work okay, but it is wetter than the others I own, so I prefer them. I’m always on the dry side with both feeds and comments. But I also prefer to just use a regular nib. I swear if I switch to Fude full time, I’ll have arthritis before I turn 50 with all the angles you’ve got to hold it at. You can also get really nice lines with a brush… but it still think I like nibs.

Yeah, you would think that it would be easier to match a nib to a pen if the size is right, but there are a million other factors at play.
