- Hey everybody! Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 John Petrucci Licks From 1997. I've featured Dream Theater's music and some of John's ideas on the channel before, but after getting a number of requests for more DT action, along with seeing the recent photos of Tosin Abasi's gift to John on their current tour - the idea behind this episode was born, so let's dive in!
The licks/ideas shared in this lesson came from a guitar clinic in 1997 that John held in Brazil at a guitar institute. The footage catches him shredding his way through a number of Dream Theater songs/backing tracks, an extended Prince tribute with an instrumental rendition of 'Purple Rain,' various techniques and tone secrets/tips, and much more.
The ideas shared here include an expressive melodic phrase using string bending/vibrato, a two-part sequenced phrase from the epic solo from Dream Theater's song 'Voices,' a Steve Morse-inspired "speed lick," a slick dominant pentatonic phrase, and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a John Petrucci fan, a fan of technical/shred guitar playing, or maybe just a player searching for some new licks/ideas to stick in your bag of tricks - this lesson is totally for you! The solo from "Under A Glass Moon" is perfection.
Petrucci just might be the GOAT
Totally agree that John is a whole package player. Love his solo work! First discovered JP when I bought a G3 DVD with Via and Satch - didn't know who this Petrucci guy was. Well Glasgow Kiss was the first thing I heard and was totally blown away!
John was using these licks a lot during those days when he was playing live. Lick 1 can be heard in the background at some point during Rock Discipline. Lick 2b is in the Voices solo (Awake is a stellar album!) and also in the intro solo of Rock Discipline.
Chromaticisms like Lick 3 were all over his lines (and still are) and examples of the dominant pentatonic lick can be found in the awesome Scarred solo.
His playing in the 90s sounded a bit more... risqué? Does that make sense (that Scarred intro... my goodness)? He has evolved, grown and matured in all the best ways, yet Images and Words and Awake had some spice that was never reproduced in later albums, their greatness notwithstanding.
I have a particular spot in my heart for JP's music... he looks like such a good person too, always very gracious with fans and fellow musicians.
Great video, Dave! Love the tone coming from that Strat.
I think he have more technique nowadays, but i find his playing to be tastyer in 90's.
In fact, the first lick belongs to a song that he write as a bunch of exercices combined to play at clinics. You can hear bits of this song in Rock Discipline and Petrucci finally released this song in Terminal Velocity, with a few changes to his structure. It's called Gemini
I think he might've got the sidewinder technique from Neil Shon in the song Lights. I love that tune, and playing that solo. It's one of my favorites. Shon does it super fast, and I still have trouble with it sometimes lol. You've gotta go into it just right, or it all falls apart.
Late 80s early 90s Dream Theater is my favourite. John’s tone during that era was unbeatable.
In the 90s I had a Picasso Ibanez and sold it in the early 2000s. That was the biggest gear mistake I ever made!!
Saw them last week. Great show.
His phrasing in the 90s particularly Awake/Change of Seasons/Infinity was just so special IMO
Images and words too, for me. Amazing touches on that album.
Outstanding, thanks DB. Love the “Picasso Era” of Dream Theater.
Perhaps you can answer a technical question for me; at 7:20 when you launch into the double-picking sequence can you explain the mechanics of your thumb movement? It rolls in and out at the knuckle presumably to control pick orientation. But I have never understood the action/reaction of the movement. Thanks.
Beautiful tone on the strat awesome content as usual Sir 🤘🤘✌️🖖
Solid!!!! Nicely done! Saved this lesson. Need to practice these
Kevin Moore was the most interesting member, musically.
That guy has been popping up everywhere he was on Ola England's channel not long ago would love to attend his guitar camp😎👍
LATE NIGHT, E dominant pentatonic is the b7 pentatonic scale in the Key of F# minor. Mostly others will use Diminished scale but the dominant pentatonic is a substitution scale. Example in the key of C major you will play the Bb dominant pentatonic scale which is the b7 pentatonic scale.
cool! thanks!
Great work as always brother 🤟🏽
Pull me under is 1 of my favorites im not afraid....
Does Tosin ... smoke John...Mister Brewski? Smoking and Kicking ASS.... No punches Thrown... great LIFE for Both of them...
That “sidewinder” lick sounds like Neal Schon “Lights”
Also love your vibrato Sir 🤘🤘✌️🖖
When is the Devin Townsend chordplay coming?
No2 B is from the "Voices" song; that's a.very common pentatonic guitar rock pattern lick, used in the 80's. It's also on Sweet Child O'Mine guitar solo.
Prince's "Purple Rain" has the same chord progression as Journey's "Faithfully" song. That's actually where Prince took that chord progression idea from.
BTW 90's DT rules over today's DT.
dear Sir:) Can you please make a video on how to solo over mixolydian b6 mode with ease ... Covering whole fretboard ... Also, Big fan of your content :>
Great video !! Love Petrucci !!! *REQUEST* Please do a video covering "Prince" ?? His chords or Licks !! Love Prince !! He was a great influence on me and many others !!! That Dominant pentatonic scale would be a great one to cover with us as well !!! Great Job , Dave !!!
hOLA AMIGO, ES MUY DIFICIL PONER LOS SUBTITULOS EN LOS VIDEOS? SERÍA DE GRAN VALOR PARA LOS QUE NOS ES DIFICIL EL IDIOMA, GRACIAS POR LEERME
Is the first lick from a song or anything?
I think it is something that John was using during live solos, demos and clinics in the 90s. You can definitely hear it at some point on Rock Discipline, when John is talking (can't remember exactly where though).
the song is "Gemini"
@@petyapyatochkin9630 True!
Who?
Try death metal....DEICIDE
That stuff aint easy.
I remember how excited I was for Falling Into Infinity to be released. John and Mike did some clinics leading up to it, with sneak peeks at parts of the new songs. I loved that era, particularly with Derek Sherinian's energy and humor.
I totally agree!
One of my favorite albums. Underrated, it was a shift in their sound as they fought with the label for “radio” songs but they wanted to keep the DT sound. I think there are great tracks on FII especially Lines in the Sand! But the early albums are all incredible. 🤘🏼
It’s awesome he brought the first melody back in Gemini from his recent album Terminal Velocity!
🔥🔥🔥🔥 have you done a Martin Miller one ??
I remember watching my 1993 Images and Words Live in Tokyo VHS tape obsessively at the time. He's got a great solo on there. This was also John's peak hair days as well, of course.
Love that solo ❤
The best live solo for sure.
Another fantastic lesson, David!!!🤘🏻 I agree that the ‘90s DT was a special band! Please do a lesson on Vai’s playing on “album” by PiL!🤘🏻(no one’s done it!!!)
That was the best time for John and Dream Theater those graphics on his Ibanez Picasso I think we're so cool agree 💯%
Did you him, Tosin Abasi and Devin Townsand on Beato's channel? Really great interviews.
Excellent stuff-I prefer your tone to his though! A good ol' Fender superstrat beats Ibanez everytime 😂
Does your guitar sound coming from that Behringer rack thing?
Yeah, he talks about it in an earlier episode.
I was 17 in ‘97 and Petrucci was a *revelation*. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
Yeah! In the 90s John Petrucci was THE best guitar player.
And then Michael Romeo showed up.
@@TheCyberMantis who?
@@Wolf.51.50 Don't act stupid.
@@TheCyberMantis Yeah, Romeo is undoubtedly there between Yngwie and Petrucci.
Can you do a W.A.S.P chordplay?
