You guys need to go way back in the Sammy catalog to the 70's when he was in Montrose. "Rock Candy" is a must see.

Sammy Hagar was issued a ticket in upstate NY for driving over 55 mph. He told his wife, "I can't drive 55." Went home and wrote the song.

This one you don't want to play while driving on the highway. A ticket getter. This was before Van Halen and before Sammy went solo he was in the band Montrose.
Ethan - As part of his response to the oil embargo, President Nixon signed in 1974 a federal law lowering all national highway speed limits to 55 mph. The act was intended to force Americans to drive at speeds deemed more fuel-efficient, thereby curbing the U.S. appetite for foreign oil.

"There Is Only One Way To Rock" and "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" are terrific songs by Sammy. I'm a big fan of Sammy. he speed limit was lowered to 55 in the early 70s because of a gas crisis. And yes the 80s were awesome. I turned 13 in '79 but in reality the 80s were my teenage years.

Contrary to other cements, Sammy Hagar did have songs before Van Halen and before his solo band. Look up the band Montrose this was his first band and has a few great songs. Space station #5 is my favorite but Rock Candy, Bad Motor Scooter are good songs also. They are a little harder rock I think but his voice lends good to hard rock.

Sammy Hagar definitely had an extensive solo career before he joined Van Halen. His other biggest hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during that period was "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" (#13 in 1982) -- but "I'll Fall In Love Again" (1982) went to #2 on the US Rock chart, "Remember the Heroes" went to #6 (1983), and "Heavy Metal" (from the Heavy Metal movie soundtrack), "Three Lock Box", and "There's Only One Way To Rock" have been staples on album-oriented-rock stations since they debuted.

It IS a protest song. It was before Van Hagar. He is saying that 55 is way too restrictive and he just can’t comply. (Most felt the same). 55 was implemented to save gas and also lives. (Oil shortage).

  • @5avan10

A lot of interstate highways are 70 and 75 these days; there are some places such as Utah and Idaho where it goes up to 80, and even one place in Texas where it is 85. Also, you are both sort of right; he was singing about his need for speed, but also protesting the new restrictive speed laws. "It used to take 2 hours, now it takes all day... it took me sixteen hours to get to LA..."

55 was a Federally mandated speed limit in the 70s and 80s, allegedly to save gas. I've seen posted limits as high as 80 since that was lifted.
This song made Hagar seem ideal for Van Halen since he plays guitar quite well and Eddie was more interested in keyboards at that point. Of course, that's not how it worked out.
Hagar joined Van Halen in 1985; this song was 1984.

Many say Sammy had a little to do with getting the speed limit raised up to 65 from 55. It was raised Nationwide a year or so after this song was released. I forget how long it had been at 55 but it was said it would help gas mileage during the oil embargo. The son is correct Dad. People did not like the lower speed limit. This was a screw you song to the Gov.

In the US Hot 100 chart this reached #26, and on the Mainstream Rock airplay chart #9. I only know this song from the defunct reaction channel that used to be JEM. This wasn't a hit or release in the UK, where the speed limit of 55 would make no sense at all. We've always had 30, 60 and a national limit of 70 mph, depending on which type of road you're on, making a mockery of the whole notion of starting a revolutionary war to free yourselves from a free country... never understood that. I think here they just want to take our cars by 2030 in the name of the Net Zero religion.
Despite never having been occupied by Napoleon - the reason we still drive on the left - his enthusiasts sur le continent in the EU and their fifth columnist traitors in the UK elite have nevertheless exacted their revenge by forcing out our Freedom Units in most weights and measures to be replaced by Napoleonic Units (beloved by kids who enjoy being useless at maths), but miles and mph on the roads are still with us - too costly to change all the road signs, haha!
