Living in South Florida and having access to so many alternative sources of luxury goods (i.e. designer consignment, luxury outlets), your point about artificial scarcity is so on point. I’ve seen goods that brands heavily marketed a year ago end up at the outlets for 50-75% off. It definitely reminds me not to get caught up in the “mania” of luxury marketing and the desire to have the newest and latest thing. Great video Autumn! Thanks for always making us think about more about our thoughts and beliefs around luxury!💋

This was my favorite video of yours and I agree with everything said. I’m new to UA-cam but I was sort of weirded out but the snootiness and snobbiness of certain conversations. I’m a quality snob as well I must admit esp with food and material goods but I view “luxury” as all of the above. I tell people just going to Starbucks for a latte everyday before work Is a luxury. Going to the nail salon every week or the new thing getting lashes done. Even buying disposable diapers for your kid lol I think we just become numb to it in the “first world” and have to find levels to it

I truly Loooved this video! I have a dear friend that’s a stylist & loves style. She said Style is what you make it!❤ That has stuck with me, because a lot of times we as people can get caught up in the “latest style or what what’s trending” but what if I like 2 seasons ago’s style for example does the make me any less of a person of style?! So as she told me that, YOUR Video says to me “Luxury is what you make it!” And that just took a load off of me mentally! Thank you for this break down, very tastefully done ✅ ♥️♥️♥️

I can relate to a lot of what you said because I also grew up poor and now have luxury things. To me, luxury is anything I find beautiful that enhances my quality of my life or brings me pleasure. This can be enjoying a casual stroll in the park on a sunny day, lounging in bed with my kids on a lazy weekend morning, or a beautiful, well-crafted handbag or piece of jewelry. I love fashion but it can also be quite elitist and that elitism can bring out the worst in people. I try to focus on what I find beautiful and how a piece of good cashmere can feel, or the warmth of a good winter coat, or the comfort of high quality shoes, or a sentimental watch. Great video as always, Autumn.

To me exclusivity is when you have something made for you and even work with the designer for specific ideas. I recently saw a Miu Miu hoodie priced at $2500., to me that’s not exclusive because if you know quality you will be able to find the same item at better price. Also I agree that quality products are to be repaired , when I worked at Gucci years ago we were busy assisting clients repairing their loafers.

Funny you should bring up diamonds. Diamonds are not the most rare stone in quantity or quality. They have been marketed to people to make them more desirable. I am also going to talk about some of these tactics in a video, soon to come!

April, thank you for this thought-provoking video. Luxury has many different meanings to me but I want to relate an experience to you that I have gone through in the last couple years. I lived in Tampa, Florida, and that area was very status oriented. It is very status oriented. I would walk into a restaurant and someone would look at my designer bag and I would get 10 compliments walking around with this gorgeous designer bag. I moved to Portland, Oregon, five years ago, and I live on a lake. Very simple life here. I would go out and nobody would say one thing about my purse or my shoes or my fancy belt. Lol! Suddenly I realized all of the things that had given me status in Tampa were meaningless where I was currently living. So what was my reason for purchasing those items. Was it for status or did I enjoy those things? I realized most people that I was around in this community had no idea what I was wearing. That made me do some deep soul-searching as to why I had focused on designer so much. Did I do it to give myself value? If I’m doing it to give myself value then that’s pretty sad. I’m still analyzing these things about myself. I just bought a crossbody bag from the Portland leather company and I absolutely love it.
Thank you for your great channel and all of your thoughts and insight. I really do enjoy listening to you.

Luxury to me is sleeping well at night without financial worry. I consider “luxury” those material things, travel, or attendance at social events that I can only dream of if given another life with more financial access. I’m super happy with my 3 “luxury” handbags: Louis Vuitton Speedy, Coach Crossbody & Brahmin. I enjoy watching channels like yours to keep up with trends and, I just like you, your personality, and your voice. (You and about 3 other content creators 😊)

The price of diamonds is the result of the De Beer’s cartel price fixing. Only a limited number of very rare diamonds have true value. I find myself in agreement with you on this video. Especially about China. China has a great tradition of opulent craftsmanship of luxury items. It hit a speed bump when the revolution hit them but until then it was an extraordinary repository of creative genius. Great video. Thank you for creating it.

Some us buy luxury in second hand stores at almost next to nothing prices. I also drive a luxury car and people judge me because I have an entry level job but what they don’t realize is that the car is a gift from my husband. People judge things from face value without understanding the real reason why somethings are happening.

Autumn, your insightful video on the nuances of luxury sparked a refreshing perspective. It's fascinating to realize that luxury isn't just a tag or a price point, but a blend of personal value, emotional connection, and quality. Your discussion about repairable luxury items resonated deeply with me, highlighting that the true essence of luxury lies in items that bear personal stories and significance, transcending their monetary worth. It's a reminder of how luxury, in its truest form, is interwoven with our life experiences and memories, making it a deeply personal and subjective concept. Your educational approach makes complex ideas accessible, much like a skilled teacher, enriching the conversation around luxury.

I think luxury can mean different things to different people, it's all subjective. In the US we take so much of what we have for granted. Years ago, my husband and I participated in a program with international students at a nearby university. At the start of the school year, there was a pot luck dinner which included all of us who were locals involved and any international student who was enrolled was invited. I've never forgotten the one young man's comment as he walked into the room. "There is more food on this table than what the average family in my country has all year." Very thought provoking. I think we all need to stop judging everyone and everything and learn to enjoy life period.

When I think of luxury, I certainly don't think of handbags or jewelry or things like that. For me these are just things, some things are simply more expensive than others. For me it was always the privilege to be born in Germany and to have many things for granted. I have traveled a lot in my life, especially in Europe, but also on other continents. I just don't get the standard that I'm used to at home so naturally everywhere.

I really enjoyed your video. Luxury is exclusivity, in my opinion. It's not exactly the object, it's the brand and the illusion of wealth and classicism that the object signifies that defines what luxury is. I have a friend that purchased a pair of Chanel earrings that fell apart after two wears. Those earrings cost $3000. I have earrings from Burlington I have had for years that I still wear. Cost me less than $10. Another friend complained that her LV hoop earrings are starting to fade. But it's the status and classicism of wearing these labels that scream luxury that the consumer is buying into. The illusion.

This is an excellent video and thank you for linking the articles! Very thought provoking and as i get older with more world experience, luxury for me is about quality and something that enhances my life. It makes me slow down and enjoy the moment. At age 44, I think about buy once , buy wll. Quality over quantity. Be where my feet are and finally maximize the moment! Excited for your next video !

Prestige and status I think. Really wealthy people aren't so worried about displaying their wealth as they're used to it and they have enough power and respect - they don't need to display either.
Less wealthy but aspirational people feel less empowered, they are not immediately recognised as 'special' so they kind of have to advertise it.

My highest form of luxury would be having things made exclusively for me. A wardrobe made to fit me in the colors that flatter me and the fabrics that make sense for my climate. My hope is that technology will one day make this the norm. Imagine stepping into a booth to have your body scanned and then be able to order clothes in any style and color you wish made to fit your body. Not only would it be amazingly luxurious, it would eliminate the need for inventory.
You mentioned that some people think it's more luxurious to buy something new rather than repair or refurbish something old. I think this may be more of an American perspective. Europeans seem to be more likely to have quality furniture in their homes for example because the norm is to restore and upholster furniture rather than throw it out and get new. In this way they end up with only the items that have lasted through this repeated process and are made well. Meanwhile our new furniture seems to be made more cheaply every year.
In your China examples I do think the country can matter. It isn't that nothing can be made well in China. It's just that it is far less likely. China does not have the controls around representing things honestly that a lot of other countries do. They are known to label food and other items as not having chemicals that they are tested to have. Because there are no controls in place they will often get away with what they can. For this reason I would avoid food, including pet food, made in China. It could be fine, but why risk it?

At 75 luxury is having new knees and hips lol Luxury is having the things I love around me, just special items. Luxury is wisdom and learning something from your mistakes. Knowledge to me is the freedom to always keep learning. Luxury is having freedom to enjoy what we have and to worship God. Talent is God given. A very interesting topic. Going to put this out to my FB friends. I know I had a pair of Papa hallo shoes so long ago. I loved those shoes and kept having them repaired until the shoemaker said he couldn't fix them anmore.

I have been watching and enjoying a lot of these videos over the past few weeks, but i couldn’t help thinking just now that the greatest luxury we all enjoy is the mere fact we can have these debates over what is or isn’t luxury. It’s the greatest luxury for all of us to have the opportunity to dissect these points, make up our own minds and defend our opinions etc. When we take one moment to reflect on how some people in this world are existing, isn’t this just the greatest luxury that we all enjoy? I’m not trying to put a damper on this for anyone nor am I criticizing, like I said I’ve been watching a lot of these and enjoying them. But one of the very thoughtful comments you made in this video kind of clicked something for me and I thought, wait a minute. This is the greatest luxury right here. Watching, thinking on what defines it for us and then going on about our day after.
Great topic and video, as always, Autumn💕
