I read this book in 1966 when I was a Marine sergeant on my 2nd tour in Vietnam.
It was .my 4th year in the Marine Corp which I intended to make a career. I had already received my reup talk from the company first sergeant and had been tld if I shipped over for 6 Id get E6 and one year at duty station of my choice.
It sounded good.till I read this book and thought about what Id observed and heard the past two years and compsred it to this book.
I elected to get out of the Marine Corp and use my G I Bill to go to college and then graduate school.
    I never looked back.

Reading some of the early "Pentagon Papers," I found FDR stating, that due to France's collaboration with the Nazi's in Europe and Japan Empire in Asia, France's colonial days were over. Truman et al did not share that view and marched the USA into Vietnam, in support of France's continued colonial actions. The result was tragic.

The german army was better fighters with better logistic by far

    • @charlenegarrigan1393

tess1337 Better logistic? Perhaps as far as a land only war where their panzers n troops do not extend past 400 miles from their manufacturing base, in that case you are correct. The issue for became once they attempted to take the war over seas and Into enemy territory 500 miles from their manufacturing base, they completely lacked any reasonable naval resupply and failed miserably by never developing any four engine plus bombers nor more importantly four engine supply aircraft, rendering it only a matter of time til the lost it truly can be boiled down to those to facts, the lack of strategic logistical planning had the war lost before it began for Germany. In fact the reason Dwight Eisenhower was select as Allied Supreme Commander had more to do with the fact that he was the finest field grade army officer from logistics which he had been operating in for nearly 15 years by 1941, that alone helps explain exactly how important logistics is to any way success, D.E. had absolutely zero combat command experience yet he was selected over Generals n Field Marshals that had combat command experience from being second Lt.s all the way up to Divisional, Corps, Army, n Army Group size command. Logistics are key, but without moral conviction and moral the finest armies can n do fail hence the US in south east Asia rotating troops after one year tours once they finally have learned to fight in that environment n enemy ridiculous, VC n NVA had only two ways home death or victory that’s hard to beat wn fought with the arrogance we the US did as well as the French!

None of this takes a book to figure out: I go to the Nam for a year unless I am wounded or extend my tour of duty. It is not my country. A Vietnamese lives there permanently. If Nyugen does not unite the country in his lifetime his son will and if his son does not his grandson will etc. Much bravery on both sides and much bloodletting but the outcome could never be in doubt.

    • @richardbono5540

Nope, never in doubt, no despot or despots son(s) was ever going to subjugate the will of the people no matter who did their fighting for them, no matter how long

@@jimw.4161 Thank you for your vote of confidence late as it might be. Anyone who graduated from high school - and a lot of guys did not - knew the Nam was a lost cause. Afghanistan was a lost cause also and folded up faster than the Nam but hey - look at all the M-16's Joe Biden gave to the Taliban - now those will not come back to the U.S.! Now that is gun control!

That would seem obvious at this point. However we have the advantage of creating our hypothesis with the use of hindsight. They (the west) had in resent memory won major wars on foreign soil based solely a sense of moral duty… they assumed the war against communism could be won in the same way.
