I've read that he declined to be selected for the squad because he wasn't guaranteed a starting XL place. He played in friendlies in May so he was definitely still in the picture. There were a few players that didn't go - Geels, Peters and of course Cruyff. I don't know much about Van Hanegem but some rate him as better than Cruyff!
Maradona in '78, you mean ;-) Better than Cruyff is a bit too much credit, imo, but he's definitely up there with the greats. So much vision that he was playing half blind at the end and still managed to lead his teammates. Great guy on and off the pitch
Sorry, Maradona in '74 was not a typo - he was young, but good enough and devastated that he was not on the plane to Germany. Van Hanegem definitely in the same class as Cruyff as a player -too bad he let his family history in Germany overwhelm him with hatred in the final and tried to humiliate Germany or that he could not challenge Haan and Krol's desire for money in '78 and did not participate.
honey bozo : In that case, you haven't got your facts straight: In '78 Maradona was 17 and wanted to play but the coach put him on the bench. I don't think at age 13 he was seriously thinking he had a chance to play the WC in '74 ;-)

Never understood why Van Hanegem did not play in Argentina '78 and why Happel/Zwartkruis failed to put him on the plane. Similar to Van Marwijk and Seedorf in S Africa I guess or Maradona in '74.
I don't think at age 13 he was seriously thinking he had a chance to play the WC in '74 ;-)
honey bozo : and, if I may add: as much as I love Willem, you can't seriously compare him to Cruyff. Seriously.. He never played for a big, foreign club to name a thing
Goeie muziekkeuze!
0:41 , No look pass
Willem was geweldig goed
How much money would this guy be worth remember the boy could play?
2:17 ⚽️ + 🎵 = 🎉 !!!
The dad of one half of W&W
Honestly world wide he might have bine forgotten but here in the netherlands pleople still know who he is. But that understand ble as he never play in a major team outside of the Netherlands so why wot they remember him.
My lord
The best dutch player all time!! They asked Johan cruijf who was the best player. Johan Cruijf answered: you have to ask willem.
what did he say?
@@marshsherrif2824 Cruijff Always !!! lol
Together with Neeskens unbeatable on midfield
All of the early 70s Ajax players were superb. What a great team.
+Rick Snyder Van Anegem played for Feijenoord, winner European Cup in 1970
+Rien Claassen Yeah I know and apologize. The Dutch were superb. Brazil had two wonderful teams in 82 and 86, delightful to watch, I'd still take Cryuff's orange.
Ajax early 70's was great !! But Feyenoord had great players too, like W.v.Hanegem, Wimpie Jansen, Theo de Jong, Rinus Israel, Wim Rijsbergen and more, all international of the National team then!!
It was Cruijf sn V Hanegem. The rest were details.
All balls on Cruyff
Misschien wel de meest technische benenbreker aller tijden
Van Hanegem was geen benenbreker.
Hij was zwaar, maar voetballers moesten hard zijn in de jaren '70.
Forgotten ... by whom? Not by anyone who was alive in the 1970s. A delicate passer, tough tackler, could dish it out and take it. When football was still a sport for men instead of the tumbling crybabies of today.
Yes, your generation really fucked up raising children. Losers.
yes bananagem, had the oranje been given a direct free kick in the final game against Germany, the result could have been reversed.
Looks like it can't be played on mobile devices because of the copyright on the music. Pathetic stuff.
timinho que só foi vice campeao
