      I’ve never quilted before, this feels intimidating. I think these are for someone that already sews. Although I love the quilt you showed…I think it’s called the coin flowers? Cream background with green vines, and a maroon/burgundy color.
      Hand stitches sound better than machine stitches because I tried to use my uncles old kenmore machine that was still pre threaded and it got knotted all up. I tried to take the machine apart and couldn’t figure it out so I just threw everything back in the box. But I know the machine works because it did stitches down a piece of fabric. I just don’t have anybody to help me figure it out.

    Corey - yes your maple leaf counts! As always sew excited for this series to continue. Love watching your videos and it has to be tough feeling like your talking to yourself but you do a great job - I always feel like your talking to me. Lol. And several thousands other people. Being an Ohio girl myself- I initially felt an extra connection however as I continued to follow your journey with fabric designing and patterns - I have become so engrossed , involved and in awe of the way your mind works and the talent you continue to put out for the quilting community. Yes- your mom is a rock star and her hand quilting is amazing and beautiful. Lady you are definitely cut from the same cloth as your momma 💕. such a great showing for hand quilting. When my daddy was little, he grew up on a farm. And winters were hard, so there was a lot of quilting going on. His job was to be under the quilt and he would push the needle back up to the quilter (usually my great grandma). He loved it. And it was almost like he was in a tent. :)

    • @CorianderQuilts
      @CorianderQuilts  2 роки тому

      Oh that's such a neat memory. We used to sit under the quilting frame as well...although not to be helpful. We thought it was so funny to give the quilt a little tap from underneath where the thimbles or threads were sitting so they'd bounce up off the quilt. Needless to say the quilters didn't find this as amusing as my sisters, cousins, and I did. =)

    Honestly, that may be your "first hand-quilted quilt", but not the first quilt YOU hand quilted. It's beautiful, I love the colors, and your Mom did an awesome job. I have tried hand-quilting a couple of times, but I'm not a very patient person. I want it NOW, so I can move on to the next project. Life's too short to spend a year on one project. Can't wait to watch this series. I've been looking at my latest Twin quilt, for a year, and have finally, this week finished it. I'm not happy, but it's done, and that was MACHINE quilted.

    • @CorianderQuilts

      I would never claim it as my first hand quilted quilt (or even the first one I owned)!...I just meant my first pieced quilt. =) But really, I only picked fabrics and cut them. I do agree with you that unless you really enjoy it, a year is a long time to spend on a project!

    Love all your quilts. My mom started quilting when they use templates too. So cool you have quilts that your family has worked on together. Now that my mom is elderly, we sometimes work on a quilt she's making together. She'll piece and I finish them up! Lancaster has been a fun day trip for us over the years..whether with mom, a friend or the hubby and grandkids...its always a delightful day! I always admire the hand quilting I see, but I could never do that....instead I tried the big stitch quilting also. It's soo relaxing and I love the look of it! Happy Quilting!

    I am a nurse. I moved from South Africa to Australia. In South Africa a street vendor was selling a wall quilt with a story of her life in the townships. I grew up in a township but I never knew about telling one’s story on fabric, so that was on my bucket list to make one for each of my children. 17 years later and Covid came, bringing extremely strict lockdowns in Australia. I was scared, angry that I couldn’t go to South Africa to see my children. Then I thought I would sew a quilt for my only grandchild. But I wanted a memory/photo quilt so she would know her great grandparents who were still alive. I had never sewn before, but with people like you on UA-cam I found myself making absolute magic, piecing material and making pictures and blocks with the photos. All this with panicked fabric buying when our restrictions were lifted. You wouldn’t believe our restrictions! All this between ICU and anaesthetic shifts. But the hand sewing got me through this scary times. I big stitched wavy lines looking at Deborah Richmond. I took two years to finish my quilt, sewing in three different countries, and finally took it to South Africa to my grandbaby. I was so proud of myself. A first time first generation quilter. 100% by hand.

But me, I'll stick to my machine for piecing, which is what I love to do. I also wanted to say that I enjoy the logo you helped design for Becky at Power Tools With Threads.

      I don't mind hand sewing binding but I really like hand quilting. I live in and grew up in an Amish community and have Amish background in my family and my husband's family--I think just about everyone that lives here does! Do you have Amish background also?
      Becky is so great!...I really enjoyed chatting with her. She had a wonderful plan for her logo and I only had a couple small suggestions. =)

    You certainly did dive head first into your quilt making with your beautiful applique!
    When I started quilting, I did hand quilt several baby blankets, and small projects...but all of my quilting was outline, or in the ditch. Nothing as beautiful as your mom's!
    I have had the "pleasure" of attending a quilting bee. I was maybe 23 or 24, and all of the other ladies were 70+. While they were nice, and I graciously thanked them for inviting me, I quickly decided that it probably wasn't the place for me, lol. It was a little intimidating, and not very helpful.
    I had not seen the big stitch method used until I saw you do it in a video a while back. I really like the looks of it, and can't wait to learn more about the technique. I am looking forward to this series! Thank you!

      @CorianderQuilts  2 роки тому

      I have always been so drawn to applique...I still enjoy it, though don't do it as often now as I have over the years.
      My mom has hand quilted a number of bed-sized whole cloth quilts...no piecing, entirely hand quilted. You would love to see those!
      I can see where that quilting bee would have been intimidating. At least around here, by the time hand quilters have reached age 70, they very easily could have been hand quilting for 55-60+ years!
      I think big stitch is such a nice way to get into hand quilting and all of those colorful threads are so much fun!

      @amandaaskew7606 2 роки тому

      @@CorianderQuilts oh, I bet those whole cloth quilts are stunning!
      Yes, not only did a lot of those women have decades under their belts of quilting, but several of them had even grown up with each other, and attended quilting bees with their mothers! In fact, me being there new and young, brought up a spirited debate about whether or not one of their mother's ripped out the stitches that another one of their mother's had quilted when she was young and new to town, lol. Apparently, after all of those years, that was still a hurtful subject!

      Chris - couldn’t agree with you more. I like you am typically sitting with my mouth hanging open in awe! How does Corey manage to do all that she does and put out multiple fabric lines, patterns and all the books - plus keep up with all the social media , the sew alongs and also contributing and working with other fabric designers , keeping her Etsy shop running and shipping, the quilt markets (which hopefully those will be possible again soon!) and I’m sure there are so many behind the scenes things we are completely unaware of. I’m constantly amazed I know first hand what it’s like to manage running a household and a family. Corey is truly a rock star ⭐️

    As a little girl I used to watch my great grandmother hand quilt. She would stretch her quilt across two saw horses and stitch the tiniest stitches to sandwich her quilt batting and backing together. She also sewed all her own clothes on a foot peddle Singer sewing machine.

    Cory, your mums and your hand stitched quilts are absolutely beautiful. Your moms stitches are so perfect. I’m wondering if you’re familiar with Hawaiian quilting? Whatever you’re quilting ie: flowers, leaves, fish, turtles etc is appliquéd onto the fabric and then a hand stitched “echo” stitch is stitched around the item. It’s beautiful. I’m almost sure you’re probably familiar with it. It makes for great quilting bees!

    So I loved today's video for not the reason it was intended (haha). I discovered that I had fabric from your Prairie line that purchased a really long time ago (years). In the recent years I started organizing my fabric by designers (say the last 5 years or so). I really didn't dive into my already huge collection of fabrics to see if I recognized any fabrics that might be from my favorite designers. You being one of them of course. While watching the video and seeing your older quilts I was like "hey I know I have that fabric". So I went digging - Eureka I found it!!! Like getting an unexpected Christmas present. So kudos Corey - your designs stand the test of time. Love the newer and the older lines alike!!!

Of course, none are labeled, so I'm am currently trying to identify which quilt was made by my mother, grandmother, or great grandmother by the stitching.
