Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

One of the best tutorials and demonstrations on greens I've seen. The quick mixes were spot on.Painters don't need a box full of tube colors to get the right green. The old masters had limited colors to work with and their works are unparalleled. Three primaries and white is really all it takes most of the time. There are different reds to choose, cadmium, alizarin, or transparent iron oxide red. Yellows are cadmium, ochre, or Naples. Blues can be ultramarine, cerulean, or phthalo. There are a few more in each family, but those are the most common.
Thank you for this! This was one of my biggest struggles when it came to painting landscapes or mixing any kind of green in general. This video helped me tons
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome! Best discussion of greens on UA-cam!
No blue on my whole palette can ever be as cool as you 😂
Great video explaining greens. For me, greens are the biggest pain, how simple you made them, thank you Chris!! This will be my go-to video from now on.
This is the most straightforward, easy to understand and replicate tutorial on mixing greens for landscapes I've seen on UA-cam (and I've been looking at a lot of them). Love how you did it with primary colors and broke the information down to the basics. Many thanks!
Oh dang this is an awesome video!! Chris you da man bro!
Here’s another challenge-
how do you do fall colors?
How do you do snow? (I am wanting to do a snow/sunrise landscape)
You fall colors by warming them up, you snow colors by cooling them?
This is what i was missing my entire life
Extremely helpful! Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Once again, it is INTEGRAL to learn, and master color theory. Composition, color theory, and drawing. So important.
I'm always amazed at how great you are at color matching and choosing just the color that's needed in your painting
I was saying to another American Painter that in the UK and Ireland we actually do have these vivdly bright greens . The other's too obviously, but they add to the intensity by contrast. Can never have too many greens though, Mother Nature's pallet is infinite!
Very good job chris!
Glad you enjoyed it
You are such a great coach. I love your teaching. And your hair looks so good today!!!
I always find it fascinating that a warmer or cooler primary colour can change the outcome.
Thank you for making this video Chris! It’s exactly everything we need to know about the greens. Thanks for simplifying it so much😊
This video explains the problem I have in painting. I get so distracted by playing with the colors that I never get around to painting anything! I am fascinated by the way the color wheel works.
So clear...of course, with a little perspective ;)
This is great....learned so much.
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen - no one explains paint in such a practical and simple way! Thank you!!!
Excellent video! Very helpful! Thank you!!!
This video came at the right time! Was going to paint a landscape tomorrow so this really helped, thank you so much 🙏
This was a really good , and timely!...video. Thanks.
Great tutorial, thanks
nice tutorial. I thought of Edgar Payne when you where doing this. Im out in field daily and less reliance of photo in my process. When Im painting ill look my window to get the greens depending on where my lights and darks are at. This is very helpful because Im playing around with cools and warm greens. Thanks this is just I was doing and helps out a lot. nice 👍
Thanks green help. I do struggle with greens.
The best tutorial for knowing your greens. Amazing.
You are the best teatcher of youtube! thanks so much! If possible, can you explain how you paint the sunset?
i’ve wondered why my mixed paint looked weird, because i always used black to darken, and white to lighten a color. 😮 thank you for your explaining this in an understandable way! 🎨
Same lol
What a helpful video for landscape painters! Thanks Chris!
Such a helpful tutorial. Thanks so much for your wonderful teaching, Chris.
This is a very good tutorial, much awaited for those of us who quickly grab tube colours to match any greens their minds perceive. Thank you for simplifying the process with base colours .
Make a video on how light Affects color please
EXCELLENT! This is such a clear explanation. Thank you!
Really Super helpful video, thank you for solving one of the biggest problems in landscape painting. Thank you again to simplify the mystery of green.
Glad it was helpful!
THANK YOU!!!
I like that your videos start right away.
You go straight to the point and show us how mixing color is in practice, no fancy terms and long technical explanations,,,,,this way of teaching/learning process is more powerful and faster to improve painting
Chris , thanks for sharing this. Even those of us that have been painting for several years, it never hurts to go back to the basics.
This is the best video I've ever seen , explaining greens to get a lot of great greens.
Thank for this video … best lesson I’ve seen to date on mixing greens for landscape. Keeping it simple and thorough.
Very informative about mixing greens for landscape.!!even though I am painting in watercolor except lightening with titanium white I can relate that for my painting
Can’t thank you enough for this video. I’d come completely off the rails, forgotten everything about how to paint (even though I paint every day!). Watching you mix these colours and applying them has put me back on track again with new enthusiasm.
Absolutely the best demo and explanation!!❤
Chris, great video! You made it look so simple if we only take the time to practice and plan ahead. Awesome demonstration and lots of inspiration. Blessings and take care.
Really got a lot out of it. You are looking very healthy and trim. Summer agrees with you.
It isn't easy being greeeeeeen!🎶😄
You are a good teacher and artist. Thank you for sharing.
Massively useful, thank you so much! That’s a beautiful painting you used for reference ❤️
thank you for such valuable art information.
Great instructional video. You have mentioned more than once about starting with the primary colours plus white and it is finally getting through to me to try that. I have heard before that you can mix any colour with the primaries, but never bothered with it since it wasn’t promoted in any of the beginners’ art classes I took after I retired 10 years ago. I am now really keen to try this since it’s showing me how easy (even though it might be trying because you’re learning) it is to work with just a few essential colours. Thanks so much.🇨🇦
i went into this video thinking i'd just get to see some satisfying paint mixing and maybe a bit of fun colour theory but i ended up learning a really important thing! thank you for being so clear about how and in which order colour drops away in landscape painting, it really feels like that clicked for me and i'm really inspired to paint now! you're a very skilled artist :)
For me, green is one of the most difficult colors, especially in watercolor. Sometimes I either don't have the patience to mix the colors I need. And sometimes I take a clean green in a palette and spoil all the work. Thanks for this video!
Oh vow
Its a great demonstration
You made it so easy and simple for the beginners to get the wide range of greens just using the primary colours . .
I just clicked your video and found it so helpful
Your work is amazing
Loved to watch
Looking forward to watch how you make more , just using primary colours.
Thanks for your generosity
God bless
This is such a fantastic tutorial. I already watched it four times :-). Thank you SO much!
you are such an incredible teacher, thank you!
Wow thanks for making this so simple!
Thank you for your instruction, love your work, your a great artist!
Very clear and helpful! Solved a lot of my landscape problems.
This has changed my entire view on colours.
Great idea for a video. In my painting class we use two blues, two reds, two yellows. And you can make such a huge amount of combinations with just a few primaries it's amazing.
I like all your videos but this will be my go-to video for landscape greens. The camera setup was great here. Can you do something similar for blue sky? Water?
Your tutorials are amazing! Thank you!
This was beyond excellent- Thank You!
Great video - you've really cleared things up for me. Thanks!
Yes, been hoping for more color mixing. Especially primaries.
Your videos and instruction is " really" helpful. Thank you.
Very helpful. Thank you. Take care.
Really useful and great timing! I’m struggling with this right now.
You make my paintings much easier to do thank you again coach great video
Thanks so much for this you have really spurred me on to start painting in oils . I’ve bought what I need and I’m ready to go
Wonderful hints! Thank you!
Love it! Thanks!
Excellent tutorial!!!! Thank you so much!
Great job explaining greens.
Excellent lesson!!!
Fantastic tutorial.
Most excellent!
Really needed to learn this! Thank you!
Great tips!!!
Thanks for teaching
Absolutely top tutorial!!!
Awesome video!! 👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you for your wonderful lesson. I'd like to add that green color depends on the light and a green of a plant. E.g. Kyiv is full of chestnut trees. In sunny summer days they have warm emerald hue, almost pure PG36 in light.
Save this to your arsenal!
Very insightful !! TY Do you have any vids on dappled light on both grass and asphalt?
The biggest takeaway is that this can be done with any color besides green. However, many people need to see it done for it to click in their brains.(So if you are going to make videos on the other colors I can't wait to watch them) I know this video will help many people. The fact that you started with the primaries helps us not get too bogged down by the other colors and helps us focus on the actual mixing skill. After one gets the primary and white mixing down, it should become an intuitive thing. Do I need to cool it? Do I need to warm it? Do I need to saturate it? Do I need to desaturate it? Then the other colors (like you said in the video lol) can be added to the palette to enhance things. I see many people not having that strong foundation on mixing colors. Without being able to make the many colors, they won't be able to pull out the detailed form of something.
I keep bringing this up. The James Webb telescope sees in infrared. Infrared is usually invisible to the naked eye. So how can we see images of it? They map the infrared light to the visible light (the light waves we see) so that we can examine the photos. Painting is similar to this. Getting the exact color is great. However, sometimes you have to make the decision to keep the colors at a certain range so that you keep space for the brightest brights and the darkest darks. So long as the value shifts are relative to each other, the true color shouldn't matter too much. It is close enough and synergizes with the rest of the painting. (unless one are going for true color). Knowing how to mix colors allow one to not make the mistake of placing too bright or too dark of a color on the canvas. It also allows us to have a plan on how we can push the colors to bring out the form throughout the painting.
I took a long break from painting. My colors mixing skills were still there. However my form and proportions (I free hand it and don't measure) was out of whack. It took about 2-3 paintings to get back into the groove of my usual 88% likeness. I haven't came to a conclusion on what this means. I know about form and proportions, I know about how to mix and use the colors. I know that my hand-eye-brain connection was a bit rusty and that's why the first painting from the break was bad lol. I wasn't looking at the subject as much, I didn't know how to move my hand to grab the shape. It was strange but at the same time if felt like I was re-evaluating what I learned so far.
If you take a long break and it seems like you regressed, that's normal. It's the rust, you'll have to clean it off. The skills are never forgotten.
Love your video on mixing landscape greens. I am going to paint one of Camille Passarro's hillside paintings so I need to first learn every thing green
Extremely well done😀👍❤️
By simply mixing colors on his palette, he painted an avocado. A true master.
Thank you!!
I love that nutty painting of Nicolas Cage. Easy to spot Vampire's kiss. Hilarious film.
Thank you!
I I like your basic idea of starting with the primaries. And I never have a practice piece of paper beside my painting to look at the colours before I apply them. I mixed my dark purple for my dark wall of trees in the background from a primary mixture so perhaps I can figure out from what you have said how to make it look more distant. Thanks.
just when i needed it, i was struggling with mixing greens,
it would be great if you did a series on how to mix other colors! thanks so much for the video!
Awesome thank you
Great video, thanks!
I am liking your videos a lot. I don’t paint super realistically. I am working on a 6 x 6 acrylic landscape but I know the colour tutorial can fit oil as well. I wanted my background to be a deep aubergine. But I do need to lighten that even though my photo reference is from my smart phone and I don’t think it captured all the subtleties. A background is not really that far away but for the point of art I assume I need to give it perspective and make it look in the distance. So I will try myself to figure out how to lighten purple by not simply adding white.
Very helpful
This is really helpful and I thank you. Being a hobby "painter" that normally does portraits, I stayed away from landscapes. It is getting me interested in trying a landscape again, as they seem very difficult composition wise. If I can learn color theory, that may help me to understand how to tackle composition at the same time. I recently saw a landscape that was painted to demonstrate how to lead the viewers eye through it in a pre-determined way. It appears that even a small "mistake" in hue(intensity) can be enough to ruin the overall composition.
I moved from portraits and started learning somethings about landscape. I first had to learn about perspective. Do not get bogged down with drawing every single line. Just know that there is a eye level and vanishing points. 1 perspective, 2 perspective, 3 perspective. It's enough just to be aware of it. Just know that composition is king, then prespective comes in to complement the composition. (give the 3D feel)
I've seen paintings with great composition but have no 3D feel to them or have them out of whack. I still loved looking at the painting. I fell into the trap thinking perspective was king. When I created the grids and lines, I had to try and fit my composition into it. That was a huge mistake. Create the composition first! Then add in the perspective. I say this if you are loosely following the reference photo or real life location. Move stuff around, remove things, add things, etc.
Soooo good Great for a landscape Im a wee bit stuck on
