You may want to consider relocating the LiPo. Thermal Runaway happens super fast, and next to the cheap plastic fuel tank you may not have time to remove it and toss it before it grenades.
A LiPo bag is definitely a good idea. Also some sort of LiPo battery monitor/alarm is a good idea too. You can get small ones that plug into the balance port and make a pretty loud beep if they start to get low.
Moving it up off the ground to avoid puncturing a cell is a great idea.
I'm not too concerned about it running away. A DLE 170 needs between 4.8 and 9 volts for the ignition system. A 2S 5000 mAh lipo will have lots of capacity. The JST connector means it's not drawing a lot of amps. It's also a relatively constant draw, not the spikes seen in an RC car or plane. Those spikes drawing current as fast as the battery can supply are what heats up a battery.
Maybe consider a LiFeP04 that is far less likely to have thermal runaway. The FAA did a study on the fire hazards of various lithium chemistries and LiFeP04 was the only type that did not propagate fire to adjacent cells in a pack. Do a search for DOT/FAA/TC-16/17 if you would like to read it.
The problem is with LiIon not LiPo4 batteries. Lithium Iron is not a stable mix. If there is a short they become an excellent marine flare!
@@ulbuilder LiFePO4 can not do thermal runaways. They might boil of the fluid but thats it, even with a nail through it. Can't believe anyone would use Li-Ion instead for purposes like this where a thermal runaway has quite a high degree of killing you and furthermore is mounted in a high vibration environment.
the sketchy thing about the battery I would say is it being right next to the fuel tank :D

That and when a LiPo battery fails they go thermal which you're probably not gonna want to grab with your hand. Nothing quite like grabbing a flaming battery.

@@lothre I mean, I wouldn't bet the battery would fail, I think the probability for that battery to explode is very low, but if it does, under those conditions, you got no escape from that, so it's probably a good idea to find a way to keep the battery and the gas tank apart from each other.
Or use a battery that doesn't carry that risk.
No Magneto, no alternator, a separate start and run battery would give some redundancy. Diodes allowing the start battery to charge the run battery or run off the start battery. So, starting is only with the start battery, but running can be both batteries.
I have no idea if you have tried this, but make sure that cheap prop is balanced correctly. That may really help with the vibration.
So in addition to what you received you needed:
- prop
- bolts
- battery
- carabiners
- minor metal bending skills
- some RTV & threadlock
- mucho bravery

You wont be able to throw away the lithium battery before it does some serious damage, they generally release most of their energy within a couple seconds, like a small flare. Seems kinda risky right next to the fuel tank.
Not to mention potentially severe burns on your hand

Not all "Lithium" batteries are the same. This would be a very good application for Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells, most often advertised as A123 (the brand name that actually makes the best ones). They won't "vent with flames" as we used to say about lithium ion pouch cells. I use them as the starter battery in my offroad motorcycle, they have survived many crashes and are good for an easy five years of use.
no. believe me, they dont just explode randomly. i have a similar one, 3s 11.1v 4000mah, i accidentally overvolted it while charging and it didnt got hot or explode. it was at 4.4v on one cell and its supposed to be 4.2v
After truing the manifold surfaces, use high temp red RTV (no gasket) and RED loctite on the bolts. Let cure for 24 hours. Exhaust will not come loose for years. Been using engines like that for 10+ years, I know from experience what works. ;)
What’s your thought on ultra copper for exhaust sealant?
I’ve never used red myself, but on my aircooled vw’s ultra copper has been great, if not perfect.
@@orbitaljellyfish808 Ultra copper (Permatex product) can handle a higher temperature than red RTV, though it's similar (700 C vs 650 C). According to Permatex, Ultra Copper is exhaust sensor safe where red RTV is not. I would imagine though that in an engine like this you could use either product and you'd be good.
Batteries definitely need to be in a lithium fire safe container. And it can't have the possibility of becoming separated from the airframe if it goes TR. That would be unsafe for the ground below.

You addressed my concerns with these knock off motors. The exhaust will crack after couple uses, so good you sealed it at least to start. A good fuel filter is crucial. They come with crappy ones or none. Lock tight and check regularly. Move battery. The cage will support your massive balls so you should be good! (Great content as always)

I think you made a great point about manufacturers perhaps going “smaller” and lighter instead of always emphasizing power. Smaller cage and engine combined with a light but comfortable harness would be ideal for someone just wanting to get in the air without a lot of frills. The closest I can think of is the Nirvana F-light…but I had a lot of problems with the engine and it’s NOT inexpensive. Thanks for the video and will look forward to the first flight.

I was one of the 'four' that purchased that same paramotor about a month ago. I don't know what the deal is because mine came with the blue frame. Mine was actually packed very well. The parts were wrapped pretty much like yours but mine had a lot of packing to keep everything from shifting around during shipping. I had a little bit of a time getting the carb adjusted. Glad that it is an actual Walbro instead of a knock off copy.

Pro tip here. Locktite makes a high temp & high strength locktite for exhaust bolts. Might also use a dab on the spark plugs. Those cheap pot metal aluminum cylinders are famous for spitting spark plugs out the hole along with the threads. Also only use an expensive high quality spark plug that has well formed & dimensioned threads. eg: NOT AUTOLITE. Kiss those muffler flanges on a belt sander. Drop the fuel bowls and look for any fod they are famous for casting residue clogging up jets. Good luck.

As long as you know how to rebuild the engine, remachine the exhaust manifold, and replace the fuel lines, this is a great ready-to-use paramotor!
Don’t forget, replacing the carabiners and adding a lithium battery.
To be fair you are talking about only like 1 hour of work, and like $80. ANY new flying device I inspect longer than that. My new motorcycle it took me less than 2 minutes to find several loose bolts (barely had to touch the mirrors and they were flopping around, how is that suppose to be useable for a bike that is made to do 160 mph?) I don't like any mechanic touching my stuff, and I've already made several custom parts for that bike. Those engines however are fully exposed and easy to work on and simple, unless its Japanese I'm probably going to check everything before even test running it on the ground, and if its Japanese I still check the bolts that are accessible.
I’ve bought new motorcycles that required bolt tightening, carb adjustment and battery charging prior to using on the road. I think this just highlights the need to check stuff prior to using vehicles at height or speed.

@@jerryuma I'm pretty slow, but I can rebuild/replace bearings in my racing lawn mower in 30 minutes (time to roll in to time to roll out of my 1970s lawn mower with pulley swap for 40 mph speeds (in low speed setting on my variable pulley setup), something like that only takes blocks of wood (lift tires up manually), and some hand tools (socket/ratchet/ratchet extension/hammer/chisel). So if I can take apart and weld diffs (I have 3 transmissions for it) in under 1 hour then you can surely work on an air cooled engine that fast with $80 in tools...
I've even welded (repairing) and machined my own crankshafts for weedwhackers that I've used for custom front wheel drive motorized bicycles, as a CHILD! Working on essentially a lawn mower is literally childs play, so I'm sure you can do it (my living room I have a motorcycle engine apart down to the crankshaft sitting on my floor), it doesn't need anything fancy, get you an $8 metric socket and ratchet kit from Harbor Freight and you can do almost anything with that engine. Get some files and sandpaper and you can even do a port and polish job since it's a 2 stroke, I've even changed compression ratios and starting systems for similar 2 strokes like that engine (and custom exhaust and custom needle bearings for clutches instead of bushings for higher side load applications like my belt drive bikes). Most of that took a file and some safety glasses (and then finding the centripetal auto clutch weights as they flew apart and put some new holes in the shop door, haha!)

The primer bulb probably was not safe for ethanol in the gasoline. The chinese manufacturer probably didn't consider ethanol, because only the U.S. puts food in the gas tank.

He had to make several modifications to it for it to work.
The sketchiest part of that is definitely the battery. You're trusting the circuitry to be designed in a way that does not strain the battery to failure. Lithium fires burn extremely hot and fast, and I wouldn't rely on being able to unplug and chuck it lol. It being right next to the fuel tank doesn't help either.

The prop bolt issue also could have been fixed by using a lock washer and a fender washer or two on each bolt, which you really should be using anyways just like you’re supposed to on a Moster prop hub. The lock washer prevents backing out and the fender washer protects the hub and encourages more uniform pressure distribution.
I assume the replacement propeller bolts are aviation grade (were the originals?). So many SPoF on this unit. That engine is not even close to man rated. I wouldn't fly it.

This is interesting and fun... a novelty. But for new people trying to get into paramotoring at a discount, please don't order this. You would be better off buying a reputable, well maintained used paramotor. Something like a used Atom 80 will give you more reliability, parts supply, support, smoother ride, quieter, etc.
Just buy a parachute and duct tape 4 quadcopter drones to an external frame backpack, if you want to get into paramotoring cheaply.

Most of the "No Name" products you get off Ali have sourced cheaper components, with terrible Casting of Metals and the products eventually fail and break down easily. You are expierenced -- but be careful especially with the metal parts that look good brand new but Ive seen them fail countless times from fatigue. Alot of the Metal made overseas has no quality control & microsocpic imperfections.
This is my concern, and the same also applies to the harness. It might look good with webbing of a suitable size, but who knows what the actual load capacity is? How can we know what alloy has been used for the buckles and other critical parts?
No-name Chinese stuff has its place, but I only ever trust it in applications where a failure is inconvenient, but not dangerous.

Great video. My only worry is that you’re going to have novices seeing the cheap price and ultimately buying it and they probably won’t do the tinkering you did (because of your expertise and experience in doing this for a living). I just hope people think it through first before attempting to buy and get trained properly. 😅

I recognize that propeller, it's the better one of the two. The prop that didn't fly me was a 2-piece slot together type, but that one should fly you fine.
I fit mine in the passenger seat with the prop on. Can't wait to see it fly!

If you want to get the actual thrust output. Do the Hang Test at Full Power after Breakin. A little math, and the angle of the pendulum and weight of you and the motor should give a very accurate Thrust. As long as the pendulum angle wrt gravity is measured accurately.

Replace those fully threaded back to those shoulder bolts with a washer/spacer, the threaded bolts will fail way faster due to shear stress, crack propagation, and the moments created on start/stop, if you use it long enough the propeller can literally start coming undone, and with one bolt shear failure you'll have a pretty messy situation, not cause it stalls but because it could still run creating a twisting gyrating moment midair

Regarding the battery you could use a Li Íon pack, 4S as well! With 18650 cells! They are safer and last longer!
Hi, I would recommend checking out the Minimot paramotor if you want to check out more low profile motors it is very similar size to this just with swing arms and a nicer harness would love to see a full review of this!

That exhaust is a riot!! Sounds like it's eardrum-melting, HAHAHA! No expansion chamber - zero engineering for a power curve. Can't wait to see you fly it! Seems like it just happens to have thrust at the RPM it's needed at, so I have no doubt it'll fly ... but whether it flys WELL remains to be seen! 😁👍🍻

I am really curious to know how much weight the harness can take (testing the straps, buckles and carabiners). Also maybe a durability test on the motor. How prolonged usage affects it and what may fail first.

Nirvana paramotors (at least the newer ones) don't use a magneto for ignition, they use the battery. No problems getting multiple flights off of a charge.
