Friends - JD Ros is already the comment section homie by pointing out that the gaming features are indeed found in the 'Security' app, one that I clearly didn't spend enough time in. There, you can find game boosting features including better contrast rendering, a performance mode (though it isn't completely specific about what it boosts), and a few other features. As such, I will amend via this comment that gamers do get some love from the Xiaomi Mi 9. I was very close to removing this video to reupload an updated version, but that would take away from JD Ros' heads-up and I want to be sure I uphold the community at times like this. Thank you, JD Ros!
See, sometimes the UA-cam comment sections can be enlightening and a place for good! :)

The most true thing ever I have heard about Xiaomi is that it is an ecosystem, at least it is becoming one, and a very good one actually. I switched to Xiaomi a while back when I needed a new phone in an emergency as my Xperia Z2 had no more power to withstand the test of time. I've got the very affordable Redmi Note 5 and I was blown away by what you get for that money. Worked perfectly fine to be honest, switched to the Mi 9 and oh mama this thing is faaaaast and I mean it is blazing fast. It was also a no brainer switch for me as I have fitted used to their system and OS and used about half of the services that their ecosystem provides. It simply slowly sucks you in and you start liking it very much once you are in. Reminds me of one other company closely associated with the word ecosystem but this switch you don't regret.

I've had my mi 9 for quite a few days now and I love it. Miui has come a long way in the past few years and it is no longer the bloated mess it used to be. I actually like it better than stock android now. The smooth polished animations throughout the os actually makes it feel faster than any other rom I've tried. I expected the battery life to be poor at 3300 mah but with pretty heavy usage I still have 20-40% battery when I go to bed and put it on its wireless charger. Lack of 3.5mm jack sucks but because battery life is good, I at least never have to choose between charging and listening.

Another thing to note about Xiaomi devices
If it comes with or if users update its built in screen recorder to the latest or 2nd latest versions, they have the option of recording internal audio without the need to tinker with custom ROMs, rooting or all the extra hassle
I've come to appreciate that when it comes to recording some phone gameplay footage
Very much looking forward to the Redmi devices, or the Mi Max 4 (I'm quite tall with big hands) to replace my aging Mi Max 2, since they come with storage expansion options that should help mitigate the issue faced during the camera tests :)
Edit: Their app switching/multitasking carousel is also superior to that of stock Android, being able to see multiple apps at one shot and insta-kill any unwanted background apps other than the one you're using in the process of 2 screen presses, rather than having to scroll all the way to the left before being able to 'Clear All'

I've always loved MIUI because of its features, how it feels, and its aesthetics as well. Though my gripe sometimes is some app devs are not recognizing the Mi (and the Redmi) brand that's why not all apps are optimized. An example is lack of HDR support for Netflix, which the Mi 9 can hardware-wise, but Netflix is only supporting Android big names such as Samsung, LG, and recently, Huawei.

I live in the US and bought a global rom Mi 9 off of aliexpress. I felt like I took a risk because when researching things it seemed like it may not work fully where i live and thought the miui os might be kind of weird. Ive been using this phone for a couple of weeks and at first i hated miui (ive only used vanilla android and oxygen os for the past 10 years) but after having to figure out everything about it and using it all the time im extremely surprised at how much i like it now. Pretty much what i have to say is everything works just fine over here in the states with xiaomi and would recomend getting one since the price is so good for the phone you get.

Same. I had difficulty choosing between Mi 8 and Mi 9, but I'm glad I chose Mi 9, Game Turbo is so good. Adreno 640 at this price range is really worth it. I also considered waiting for Poco F2, but I realized they will compromise build quality to drop the price, so I went for Mi 9 and I am happy with it.

The Mi 9 is widely available in Europe from many large retailers (so no China stores shipping from Hong Kong but e.g. Media Markt which compares to Best Buy) for 450 USD excl taxes. This is a global version of the phone which excludes many China exclusive things like Mi Pay and comes with Google services pre-installed. Xiaomi started selling their phones in Europe last year, I'm using a Mi 8 as my daily device. So I guess Europe no longer qualifies as western market? :(

With only 128gb and no expandable storage on the Mi 9, the 256gb Explorer edition may be a better option for a lot of people.
And the transparent back looks cool too.

I prefer to use the cloud as a backup only, and store all my data on my devices. Using the cloud increases my data usage (which I'm paying for) and I've had one too many times where the cloud was unavailable. My current phone is 64gb and no expandable storage, and I'm constantly having to do storage management for it.
So for me I'll do 128gb WITH expandable storage or a minimum of 256gb without.

Doesn't the Global Version work in the States? It certainly works in Europe but the lack of SD card support is a deal-breaker. The phone takes 4K video at 60fps and that means BIG BIG files. 128gbs sounds a lot but it's not if you are going to use the camera for 4K video recording. I would want 256gbs minimum for a phone with no SD card support and even then I would be forever checking how much memory I had available. Super phone at a great price point but reluctantly I would pass it by for that very reason.
