I feel like this channel only focuses on really skipped over places in the world, and really interesting topics no one usually talks about, and im all up for it
Glad I'm not alone in the hobby of randomly looking at remote places on Google Maps! I've looked at exactly this island before and wondered what those things there were, so thanks for the answers.
At 3:12, you said that other countries wouldn't be able to pass through the EEZ without Japan's permission, but that is false. Within the territorial waters, nations only have to allow innocent passage, meaning that they can block some vessels. But within the larger EEZ, nations can only regulate resource extraction, but they can't control who enters and exits.
There’s a misunderstanding here about the 200 nm EEZ. It is not the same as territorial waters and has no effect on right of passage for international shipping.
Would you consider making a video about the island at these coordinates: 64.97241° N, 168.06708° W It’s a small abandoned island in the Bering Sea of Alaska, I find it to be super interesting because it used to be inhabited by the Inupiaq people but was abandoned over half a century ago.
@@GeomarginIf you don’t mine me asking, where did you travel to that was close to King Island? I’m from the nearby town of Nome, Alaska, so I’m familiar with the area!
Could you touch some more remote places like be Ballony Islands or this extremely remote Rock island east of them ?Ascension Island would also be nice or South Georgia
I thought this was Japan's southernmost point, here is the coordinates: 24.288105, 153.981034 but "islands" you covered in this video are far more south. Keep up the work, you have a lot of support 💪🏼
Another great video! I had studied about Okinotorishima before, and it is interesting to learn about. I love and am very interested in the political sides of things, so I also already knew beforehand of the political reasons for these islands. I personally wouldn't consider just these little rocks in the middle of the ocean as "islands" because even though an island pretty much has to be connected to the seafloor to be called an island (at least a natural one), it also needs to be of a certain natural size. If I were making EEZs in the wider world, I would not consider those "islands" as "natural" islands. -Alankuhaa Samuelkah Fischum Eircaru
I remember learning about this place in an International Law class talking about the South China Sea and its chaotic territory disputes. iirc China also has a similar case of claiming rocks like these as islands around that area
Nice to meet you! Yeah there are definitely islands there. I don’t get paid near enough to be the one deciding international law hahaha. Just thought they looked cool on Google maps
Very interesting. We hear a lot of uproar when China does this with the Spratley Islands but I have never heard about Japan doing exactly the same thing.
There's also Minami-Tori-Shima Island, that houses JSDF airbase & is so far east from Iwo Jima, it's actually way closer to Wake Island shown at 2:43, that tells you just how absurd the length of people go to reach economic supremacy lmao.
Hey bro, I was just goofing around with google maps and found this lake (creepy lake, Unorganized South Nipissing District, ON K0J 2M0, Canada) im very confused about it
@Geomargin idk but maybe check out Irugwa island, its an island in tanzania before this there was a google street view for it but then google took it dosn, you might be able to find it on google or youtube, there is another street view but its just black
When UNCLOS came into force, there were some "rocks" in the sea that were larger than they are now, but these have since been largely obliterated by the waves. The EEZ guaranteed by these 'rocks' is actually larger than the area of Japan, and our government wants to keep it, even if it has to resort to some trickery😅 Well, Okinotorishima is now just a ridiculous meme in Japan. "The history of construction, quibbling and conflict over Okinotori-Shima"(JA) ua-cam.com/video/fQsaBRZ6aeI/v-deo.htmlsi=ZTMFZpWhIvDdGa4a
in my opinion, these shouldn't be islands. A bunch of rocks in the middle of the outer pacific is not considered an island, it's quite weird how rocks and research bases count as EEZ claims. Japan somehow got away from doing this miraculously? It probably seems fine to do this, but to go this far and spend hundreds of millions of dollars just for ocean claims up to 200km away is insane. Japan is really desperate for more ocean claims. They might as well just throw a 2 meter long rock in the middle of the pacific and call it an "island". Excellent video and topic tho!
I went to the Wikipedia article on most extreme points in Japan, clicked on this island, read that it had an interesting history, and then did research by reading more articles and watching videos. I hope I bring a new fresh look to some of these topics!

These videos are sick, finally someone answering niche questions we nerds get when zooming around on google earth!
Thanks!
that research centre looks eerie, its just a random building on a flimsy platform in the middle of the ocean
Yeah, I think it would be kinda scary to be there at night
I love how this is all because of the legal definition of an island.
Encasing a metre-wide rock in concrete 😂😂
Yep hahaha

Oh ok that makes sense. I don’t like the political stuff as much so maybe in the future I stick to just focusing on the geography and history
@@Geomarginit’s ok to make mistakes man

Nice find!
Awesome video! Also how do you come up with this stuff?
Wikipedia, zooming in on random places, earth observatory on the nasa website, and inspiration from other videos
You could talk about the Ujelang Atoll? It ends up being so forgotten that the original name of its islands was lost. over time.
I just looked into it and wow it has an interesting history. Maybe I’ll make a video
I found gold. Nice channel
Thanks!!!!
There’s a misunderstanding here about the 200 nm EEZ. It is not the same as territorial waters and has no effect on right of passage for international shipping.
Yeah a couple other people were saying that too. Whoops!
Could you please do a video on Isla De Aves? There's no English videos on it.
I've just looked into it and it looks very interesting. Maybe I will. If I do I'll credit you for the idea!
Punished Kojima straight up building Outer Heaven now
Interesting stuff
Thanks!
Interesting 😊
I challenge you to find some unhabited remote island that almost no one knows about
I have a video in the works about a Russian island that had very very little info about it

Ah yes King Island. Fun fact I've actually been pretty close to that place before. I'll look into it more and see if I could
@@GeomarginIf you don’t mine me asking, where did you travel to that was close to King Island? I’m from the nearby town of Nome, Alaska, so I’m familiar with the area!
I was actually in Nome for a few weeks. One of the only times I’ve been able to be so far north. Great town!

Yes for sure! I actually have 3 videos in the works, all about remote islands across the world. One releasing tomorrow

That’s awesome that you took a class that featured this!
Before you mentioned the economic zone i thought those islands were either made due to corruption or nuclear tests. Great vid!

how bored are you haha

how do they even get there??
I believe by boat and then helicopter from the boat to the helipad
63.43766° N, 170.88999° W this is a recursive island you should look at
That's cool! And it's on St Lawrence Island, which has a lot of interesting history
@ is it not 5th order recursive?
I don’t think it’s a 5th order just based on what I saw, but it is a recursive island

I think every country? Not too sure

every country does this, so nobody can criticize each other
surely this falls into the category of artificial islands? because that's what china is doing and the international court ruled it out as legal
Yeah, but some of it is a real island. So I'm not too sure
沖ノ鳥島は自然にできた島で中国のジョンソン南礁のように埋め立てて、できた人工島ではありません。
this look like one of the Onepiece island
So it's like what China did. Funny.
同じではありません。国際連合は沖ノ鳥島は「島」だと2012年に認定していますし、沖ノ鳥島は護岸はしましたが埋め立てはしていません。
You saw a video of someone else on the same topic and copy pasted.
